TitleNonlinear Dynamics and Chaotic Phenomena : An Introduction
Author(s)Shivamoggi, B.K
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1997.
DescriptionXIII, 410 p : online resource
Abstract NoteFolJowing the formulation of the laws of mechanics by Newton, Lagrange sought to clarify and emphasize their geometrical character. Poincare and Liapunov successfuIJy developed analytical mechanics further along these lines. In this approach, one represents the evolution of all possible states (positions and momenta) by the flow in phase space, or more efficiently, by mappings on manifolds with a symplectic geometry, and tries to understand qualitative features of this problem, rather than solving it explicitly. One important outcome of this line of inquiry is the discovery that vastly different physical systems can actually be abstracted to a few universal forms, like Mandelbrot's fractal and Smale's horse-shoe map, even though the underlying processes are not completely understood. This, of course, implies that much of the observed diversity is only apparent and arises from different ways of looking at the same system. Thus, modern nonlinear dynamics 1 is very much akin to classical thermodynamics in that the ideas and results appear to be applicable to vastly different physical systems. Chaos theory, which occupies a central place in modem nonlinear dynamics, refers to a deterministic development with chaotic outcome. Computers have contributed considerably to progress in chaos theory via impressive complex graphics. However, this approach lacks organization and therefore does not afford complete insight into the underlying complex dynamical behavior. This dynamical behavior mandates concepts and methods from such areas of mathematics and physics as nonlinear differential equations, bifurcation theory, Hamiltonian dynamics, number theory, topology, fractals, and others

TitleVibration of solids and structures under moving loads
Author(s)Fr??ba, L
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1973.
DescriptionXXVII, 484 p : online resource
Abstract NoteTransport engineering structures are subjected to loads that vary in both time and space. In general mechanics parlance such loads are called moving loads. It is the aim of the book to analyze the effects of this type of load on various elements, components, structures and media of engineering me?? chanics. In recent years all branches of transport have experienced great advances characterized by increasingly higher speeds and weights of vehicles. As a result, structures and media over or in which the vehicles move have been subjected to vibrations and dynamic stresses far larger than ever before. The author has studied vibrations of elastic and inelastic bodies and structures under the action of moving loads for many years. In the course of his career he has published a number of papers dealing with various aspects of the problem. On the strength of his studies he has arrived at the conclusion that the topic has so grown in scope and importance as to merit a comprehensive treatment. The book is the outcome of his attempt to do so in a single monograph

TitleAcoustics Dictionary : Quadrilingual: English, German, French, Dutch
Author(s)Reichardt, W
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1983.
Description109 p : online resource
Abstract NoteInterest in acoustics continues to increase. Although this branch of science was concerned primarily with the promotion of qualitative and quantitative sound transmission until a few decades ago, emphasis is currently placed also on the limitation of sound nuisance and, by extension, the setting of boundaries for permissible sound levels in places \vhere people are found. This last aspect in particular is exercising more and more influence on the design of buildings and machines, and in town and country planning. In addition, sound vibrations, because of their physical characteristics, are being used increasingly in disparate disciplines such as navigation, medical investigation and non?? destructive materials research. The flood of publications resulting from this increased interest in acoustics has led to a growing number of people being confronted with terminology which had until quite re?? cently only been used by a relatively small group of specialists and had remained largely unknown as a result. This four language dictionary, based on 'W. Reichardt, Technische Akustik; Berlin 1979', has been compiled to make not only this literature but also the nomenclature of equipment and instructions for their use accessible to the specialist and the interested layman

TitleNonlinear Waves in Waveguides : with Stratification
Author(s)Leble, Sergei B
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1991.
DescriptionIX, 163 p. 4 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteS.B. Leble's book deals with nonlinear waves and their propagation in metallic and dielectric waveguides and media with stratification. The underlying nonlinear evolution equations (NEEs) are derived giving also their solutions for specific situations. The reader will find new elements to the traditional approach. Various dispersion and relaxation laws for different guides are considered as well as the explicit form of projection operators, NEEs, quasi-solitons and of Darboux transforms. Special points relate to: 1. the development of a universal asymptotic method of deriving NEEs for guide propagation; 2. applications to the cases of stratified liquids, gases, solids and plasmas with various nonlinearities and dispersion laws; 3. connections between the basic problem and soliton- like solutions of the corresponding NEEs; 4. discussion of details of simple solutions in higher- order nonsingular perturbation theory

TitleUnsteady Aerodynamics and Aeroelasticity of Turbomachines : Proceedings of the 8th International Symposium held in Stockholm, Sweden, 14???18 September 1997
Author(s)Fransson, Torsten H
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1998.
DescriptionXIV, 858 p : online resource
Abstract NoteTwenty-one years have passed since the first symposium in this series was held in Paris (1976). Since then there have been meetings in Lausanne (1980), Cambridge (1984), Aachen (1987), Beijing (1989), Notre Dame (1991) and Fukuoka (1994). During this period a tremendous development in the field of unsteady aerodynamics and aeroelasticity in turbomachines has taken place. As steady-state flow conditions become better known, and as blades in the turbomachine are constantly pushed towards lower weight, and higher load and efficiency, the importance of unsteady phenomena appear more clearly. th The 8 Symposium was, as the previous ones, of high quality. Furthermore, it presented the audience with the latest developments in experimental, numerical and theoretical research. More papers than ever before were submitted to the conference. As the organising committee wanted to preserve the uniqueness of the symposium by having single sessions, and thus mingle speakers and audience with different backgrounds in this interdisciplinary field, only a limited number of papers could be accepted. 54 papers were accepted and presented at the meeting, all of which are included in the present proceedings

TitleShipboard Acoustics : Proceedings of the 2nd International Symposium on Shipboard Acoustics ISSA ???86, The Hague, The Netherlands, October 7???9, 1986
Author(s)Buiten, J
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1986.
DescriptionXI, 576 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe first International Symposium on Shipboard Acoustics, held in Noordwijkerhout (The Netherlands) in 1976, was a meeting of invited experts, each having considerable expertise in ship acoustics. Many of the participants were dealing with research on various ship acoustical subjects, and it proved to be a good idea to discuss future investigations and new techniques. At that time acousticians learned to use real-time signal-processing techniques and attempts were made to establish sound level prediction methods based on semi-fundamental considerations instead of the methods using empirically obtained data. Time was pressing as it was assumed that, in view of the adoption of Recommendation 141 of the International Labour Conference in 1970, authorities would soon make appropriate provisions to "protect seafarers from the ill effects of noise". This resulted in several national recommendations followed by the IMO "Code on noise levels aboard ships" which was adopted by the IMO Assembly in 1981. After that, pressure on the authorities was increased further by the decision of the European Community to protect labourers against harmful noise at their workplaces, including ships. Legally enforceable noise limits will therefore become normal in the future. In many countries recommendations with respect to maximum allowable sound pressure levels in the crew accomodations and work area aboard ships were already taken into account by ship owners, long before the existence of the Recommendations

TitleElastic wave propagation in transversely isotropic media
Author(s)Payton, R.C
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1983.
DescriptionXII, 192 p : online resource
Abstract NoteIn this monograph I record those parts of the theory of transverse isotropic elastic wave propagation which lend themselves to an exact treatment, within the framework of linear theory. Emphasis is placed on transient wave motion problems in two- and three-dimensional unbounded and semibounded solids for which explicit results can be obtained, without resort to approximate methods of integration. The mathematical techniques used, many of which appear here in book form for the first time, will be of interest to applied mathematicians, engeneers and scientists whose specialty includes crystal acoustics, crystal optics, magnetogasdynamics, dislocation theory, seismology and fibre wound composites. My interest in the subject of anisotropic wave motion had its origin in the study of small deformations superposed on large deformations of elastic solids. By varying the initial stretch in a homogeneously deformed solid, it is possible to synthesize aniso?? tropic materials whose elastic parameters vary continuously. The range of the parameter variation is limited by stability considerations in the case of small deformations super?? posed on large deformation problems and (what is essentially the same thing) by the of hyperbolicity (solids whose parameters allow wave motion) for anisotropic notion solids. The full implication of hyperbolicity for anisotropic elastic solids has never been previously examined, and even now the constraints which it imposes on the elasticity constants have only been examined for the class of transversely isotropic (hexagonal crystals) materials

TitleGiant Resonances in Atoms, Molecules, and Solids
Author(s)Connerade, J.P;Esteva, J.M;Karnatak, R.C
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1987.
DescriptionXII, 570 p : online resource
Abstract NoteOften, a new area of science grows at the confines between recognised subject divisions, drawing upon techniques and intellectual perspectives from a diversity of fields. Such growth can remain unnoticed at first, until a characteristic fami ly of effects, described by appropriate key words, has developed, at which point a distinct subject is born. Such is very much the case with atomic 'giant resonances'. For a start, their name itself was borrowed from the field of nuclear collective resonances. The energy range in which they occur, at the juncture of the extreme UV and the soft X-rays, remains to this day a meeting point of two different experimental techniques: the grating and the crystal spectrometer. The impetus of synchrotron spectroscopy also played a large part in developing novel methods, described by many acronyms, which are used to study 'giant resonances' today. Finally, although we have described them as 'atomic' to differentiate them from their counterparts in Nuclear Physics, their occurrence on atomic sites does not inhibit their existence in molecules and solids. In fact, 'giant resonances' provide a new unifying theme, cutting accross some of the traditional scientific boundaries. After much separate development, the spectroscopies of the atom in various environments can meet afresh around this theme of common interest. Centrifugal barrier effects and 'giant resonances' proper emerged almost simultaneously in the late 1960's from two widely separated areas of physics, namely the study of free atoms and of condensed matter
