TitleBiomedical Signals and Sensors III : Linking Electric Biosignals and Biomedical Sensors
Author(s)Kaniusas, Eugenijus
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2019.
DescriptionXVI, 609 p : online resource
Abstract NoteAs the third volume in the author???s series on ???Biomedical Signals and Sensors,??? this book explains in a highly instructive way how electric, magnetic and electromagnetic fields propagate and interact with biological tissues. The series provides a bridge between physiological mechanisms and theranostic human engineering. The first volume focuses on the interface between physiological mechanisms and the resultant biosignals that are commonplace in clinical practice. The physiologic mechanisms determining biosignals are described from the cellular level up to the mutual coordination at the organ level. In turn, the second volume considers the genesis of acoustic and optic biosignals and the associated sensing technology from a strategic point of view. This third volume addresses the interface between electric biosignals and biomedical sensors. Electric biosignals are considered, starting with the biosignal formation path to biosignal propagation in the body and finally to the biosignal sensing path and the recording of the signal. The series also emphasizes the common features of acoustic, optic and electric biosignals, which are ostensibly entirely different in terms of their physical nature. Readers will learn how these electric, magnetic and electromagnetic fields propagate and interact with biological tissues, are influenced by inhomogeneity effects, cause neuromuscular stimulation and thermal effects, and finally pass the electrode/tissue boundary to be recorded. As such, the book helps them manage the challenges posed by the highly interdisciplinary nature of biosignals and biomedical sensors by presenting the basics of electrical engineering, physics, biology and physiology that are needed to understand the relevant phenomena.

TitleSingle-Shot 3D Sensing Close to Physical Limits and Information Limits
Author(s)Willomitzer, Florian
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2019.
DescriptionXVIII, 174 p. 90 illus., 79 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis thesis discusses the physical and information theoretical limits of optical 3D metrology, and, based on these principal considerations, introduces a novel single-shot 3D video camera that works close to these limits. There are serious obstacles for a ???perfect??? 3D-camera: The author explains that it is impossible to achieve a data density better than one third of the available video pixels. Available single-shot 3D cameras yet display much lower data density, because there is one more obstacle: The object surface must be ???encoded??? in a non-ambiguous way, commonly by projecting sophisticated patterns. However, encoding devours space-bandwidth and reduces the output data density. The dissertation explains how this profound dilemma of 3D metrology can be solved, exploiting just two synchronized video cameras and a static projection pattern. The introduced single-shot 3D video camera, designed for macroscopic live scenes, displays an unprecedented quality and density of the 3D point cloud. The lateral resolution and depth precision are limited only by physics. Like a hologram, each movie-frame encompasses the full 3D information about the object surface and the observation perspective can be varied while watching the 3D movie

TitleMicrostates, Entropy and Quanta : An Introduction to Statistical Mechanics
Author(s)Koks, Don
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2018.
DescriptionXXIII, 541 p. 129 illus., 127 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteStatistical mechanics: the bane of many a physics student. But when pared back to its underlying concepts and built from the ground up, the field takes on a charm of its own, and embraces a wide variety of physical phenomena. This book presents a straightforward introduction to the key concepts in statistical mechanics, following the popular style of the author's highly successful textbook "Explorations in Mathematical Physics". Offering a clear, conceptual approach to the subject matter, the book presents a treatment that is mathematically complete, while remaining very accessible to undergraduates. It commences by showcasing the counting of configurations, which leads to entropy, thermodynamics, and physical chemistry. The Boltzmann and Maxwell distributions then appear, with related topics of thermal conductivity and viscosity. Next come bosons via Einstein's and Debye's theories of heat capacity, and fermions via electrical conduction and low-temperature heat capacity of metals. The text ends with a derivation of blackbody radiation, and uses this to discuss the greenhouse effect, cosmology, and lasers. Suitable for use with core undergraduate courses in statistical mechanics and thermodynamics, this book concentrates on using solid mathematics, while avoiding cumbersome notation. All mathematical steps are included in the text and worked examples. About the Author Don Koks studied at the University of Auckland in the 1980s, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in pure and applied mathematics and physics, and a Master of Science in applied accelerator physics. He was awarded a doctorate in quantum cosmology (quantum statistics and black hole theory) by Adelaide University. He works in Australian Defence, specialising in relativistic precision timing, orbital mechanics, spatial orientation concepts, and radar signal processing. Review of Explorations in Mathematical Physics by Don Koks ???With enjoyable and sometimes surprising excursions along the way, the journey provides a fresh look at many familiar topics, as it takes us from basic linear mathematics to general relativity... look forward to having your geometric intuition nourished and expanded by the author???s intelligent commentaries.??? TitleMulti-Valued and Universal Binary Neurons : Theory, Learning and Applications
Author(s)Aizenberg, Igor;Aizenberg, Naum N;Vandewalle, Joos P.L
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 2000.
DescriptionIV, 276 p : online resource
Abstract NoteMulti-Valued and Universal Binary Neurons deals with two new types of neurons: multi-valued neurons and universal binary neurons. These neurons are based on complex number arithmetic and are hence much more powerful than the typical neurons used in artificial neural networks. Therefore, networks with such neurons exhibit a broad functionality. They can not only realise threshold input/output maps but can also implement any arbitrary Boolean function. Two learning methods are presented whereby these networks can be trained easily. The broad applicability of these networks is proven by several case studies in different fields of application: image processing, edge detection, image enhancement, super resolution, pattern recognition, face recognition, and prediction. The book is hence partitioned into three almost equally sized parts: a mathematical study of the unique features of these new neurons, learning of networks of such neurons, and application of such neural networks. Most of this work was developed by the first two authors over a period of more than 10 years and was only available in the Russian literature. With this book we present the first comprehensive treatment of this important class of neural networks in the open Western literature. Multi-Valued and Universal Binary Neurons is intended for anyone with a scholarly interest in neural network theory, applications and learning. It will also be of interest to researchers and practitioners in the fields of image processing, pattern recognition, control and robotics

TitleReal-Time Adaptive Concepts in Acoustics : Blind Signal Separation and Multichannel Echo Cancellation
Author(s)Schobben, D.E
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2001.
DescriptionXII, 160 p. 1 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteBlind Signal Separation (BSS) deals with recovering (filtered versions of) source signals from an observed mixture thereof. The term `blind' relates to the fact that there are no reference signals for the source signals and also that the mixing system is unknown. This book presents a new method for blind signal separation, which is developed to work on microphone signals. Acoustic Echo Cancellation (AEC) is a well-known technique to suppress the echo that a microphone picks up from a loudspeaker in the same room. Such acoustic feedback occurs for example in hands-free telephony and can lead to a perceived loud tone. For an application such as a voice-controlled television, a stereo AEC is required to suppress the contribution of the stereo loudspeaker setup. A generalized AEC is presented that is suited for multi-channel operation. New algorithms for Blind Signal Separation and multi-channel Acoustic Echo Cancellation are presented. A background is given in array signal processing methods, adaptive filter theory, and fast filtering in the frequency domain. The included CD-ROM can be played using any compact disc player to play the simulation results that are described in the text. When inserted into a computer, it furthermore gives Matlab implementations of the new algorithms along with audio data with which to experiment. This makes the book suited to researchers, engineers, and university students, who want to get acquainted with these emerging fields
