TitleMathematical SETI : Statistics, Signal Processing, Space Missions
Author(s)Maccone, Claudio
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2012.
DescriptionLII, 724 p. 109 illus., 49 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book introduces the Statistical Drake Equation where, from a simple product of seven positive numbers, the Drake Equation is turned into the product of seven positive random variables. The mathematical consequences of this transformation are demonstrated and it is proven that the new random variable N for the number of communicating civilizations in the Galaxy must follow the lognormal probability distribution when the number of factors in the Drake equation is allowed to increase at will. Mathematical SETI also studies the proposed FOCAL (Fast Outgoing Cyclopean Astronomical Lens) space mission to the nearest Sun Focal Sphere at 550 AU and describes its consequences for future interstellar precursor missions and truly interstellar missions. In addition the author shows how SETI signal processing may be dramatically improved by use of the Karhunen-Lo??ve Transform (KLT) rather than Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). Finally, he describes the efforts made to persuade the United Nations to make the central part of the Moon Far Side a UN-protected zone, in order to preserve the unique radio-noise-free environment for future scientific use

Author(s)McLean, Ian S
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2008.
DescriptionXL, 552 p. 180 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThe second edition of Electronic Imaging in Astronomy: Detectors and Instrumentation describes the remarkable developments that have taken place in astronomical detectors and instrumentation in recent years ??? from the invention of the charge-coupled device (CCD) in 1970 to the current era of very large telescopes, such as the Keck 10-meter telescopes in Hawaii with their laser guide-star adaptive optics which rival the image quality of the Hubble Space Telescope. Authored by one of the world???s foremost experts on the design and development of electronic imaging systems for astronomy, this book has been written on several levels to appeal to a broad readership. Mathematical expositions are designed to encourage a wider audience, especially among the growing community of amateur astronomers with small telescopes with CCD cameras. The book can be used at the college level for an introductory course on modern astronomical detectors and instruments, and as a supplement for a practical or laboratory class

TitleModel-Based Processing for Underwater Acoustic Arrays
Author(s)Sullivan, Edmund J
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2015.
DescriptionX, 113 p. 25 illus., 14 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis monograph presents a unified approach to model-based processing for underwater acoustic arrays. The use of physical models in passive array processing is not a new idea, but it has been used on a case-by-case basis, and as such, lacks any unifying structure. This work views all such processing methods as estimation procedures, which then can be unified by treating them all as a form of joint estimation based on a Kalman-type recursive processor, which can be recursive either in space or time, depending on the application. This is done for three reasons. First, the Kalman filter provides a natural framework for the inclusion of physical models in a processing scheme. Second, it allows poorly known model parameters to be jointly estimated along with the quantities of interest. This is important, since in certain areas of array processing already in use, such as those based on matched-field processing, the so-called mismatch problem either degrades performance or, indeed, prevents any solution at all. Thirdly, such a unification provides a formal means of quantifying the performance improvement. The term model-based will be strictly defined as the use of??physics-based models as a means of introducing a priori information. This leads naturally to viewing the method as a Bayesian processor. Short expositions of estimation theory and acoustic array theory are presented, followed by a presentation of the Kalman filter in its recursive estimator form. Examples of applications to localization, bearing estimation, range estimation and model parameter estimation are provided along with experimental results verifying the method. The book is sufficiently self-contained to serve as a guide for the application of model-based array processing for the practicing engineer

TitleWavelets in Neuroscience
Author(s)Hramov, Alexander E;Koronovskii, Alexey A;Makarov, Valeri A;Pavlov, Alexey N;Sitnikova, Evgenia
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2015.
DescriptionXVI, 318 p. 138 illus., 20 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book examines theoretical and applied aspects of wavelet analysis in neurophysics, describing in detail different practical applications of the wavelet theory in the areas of neurodynamics and neurophysiology and providing a review of fundamental work that has been carried out in these fields over the last decade. Chapters 1 and 2 introduce and review the relevant foundations of neurophysics and wavelet theory, respectively, pointing on one hand to the various current challenges in neuroscience and introducing on the other the mathematical techniques of the wavelet transform in its two variants (discrete and continuous) as a powerful and versatile tool for investigating the relevant neuronal dynamics. Chapter 3 then analyzes results from examining individual neuron dynamics and intracellular processes. The principles for recognizing neuronal spikes from extracellular recordings and the advantages of using wavelets to address these issues are described and combined with approaches based on wavelet neural networks (chapter 4). The features of time-frequency organization of EEG signals are then extensively discussed, from theory to practical applications (chapters 5 and 6). Lastly, the technical details of automatic diagnostics and processing of EEG signals using wavelets are examined (chapter 7). The book will be a useful resource for neurophysiologists and physicists familiar with nonlinear dynamical systems and data processing, as well as for gradua te students specializing in the corresponding areas

TitleVoice and Speech Quality Perception : Assessment and Evaluation
Author(s)Jekosch, Ute
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2005.
DescriptionX, 210 p : online resource
Abstract NoteFoundations of Voice and Speech Quality Perception starts out with the fundamental question of: "How do listeners perceive voice and speech quality and how can these processes be modeled?" Any quantitative answers require measurements. This is natural for physical quantities but harder to imagine for perceptual measurands. This book approaches the problem by actually identifying major perceptual dimensions of voice and speech quality perception, defining units wherever possible and offering paradigms to position these dimensions into a structural skeleton of perceptual speech and voice quality. The emphasis is placed on voice and speech quality assessment of systems in artificial scenarios. Many scientific fields are involved. This book bridges the gap between two quite diverse fields, engineering and humanities, and establishes the new research area of Voice and Speech Quality Perception

TitleObservational Astrophysics
Author(s)L??na, Pierre;Rouan, Daniel;Lebrun, Fran??ois;Mignard, Fran??ois;Pelat, Didier
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2012.
DescriptionXV, 719 p. 128 illus., 71 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis is the updated, widely revised, restructured and expanded third edition of L??na et al.'s successful work Observational Astrophysics. It presents a synthesis on tools and methods of observational astrophysics of the early 21st century. Written specifically for astrophysicists and graduate students, this textbook focuses on fundamental and sometimes practical limitations on the ultimate performance that an astronomical system may reach, rather than presenting particular systems in detail. In little more than a decade there has been extraordinary progress in imaging and detection technologies, in the fields of adaptive optics, optical interferometry, in the sub-millimetre waveband, observation of neutrinos, discovery of exoplanets, to name but a few examples. The work deals with ground-based and space-based astronomy and their respective fields. And it also presents the ambitious concepts behind space missions aimed for the next decades. Avoiding particulars, it covers the whole of the electromagnetic spectrum, and provides an introduction to the new forms of astronomy becoming possible with gravitational waves and neutrinos. It also treats numerical aspects of observational astrophysics: signal processing, astronomical databases and virtual observatories

TitleTools of Radio Astronomy
Author(s)Wilson, Thomas L;Rohlfs, Kristen;H??ttemeister, Susanne
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2013.
DescriptionXV, 609 p. 155 illus., 2 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis 6th edition of ???Tools of Radio Astronomy???, the most used introductory text in radio astronomy, has been revised to reflect the current state of this important branch of astronomy. This includes the use of satellites, low radio frequencies, the millimeter/sub-mm universe, the Cosmic Microwave Background and the increased importance of mm/sub-mm dust emission. Several derivations and presentations of technical aspects of radio astronomy and receivers, such as receiver noise, the Hertz dipole and ??beam forming have been updated, expanded, re-worked or complemented by alternative derivations. These reflect advances in technology. The wider bandwidths of the Jansky-VLA and long wave arrays such as LOFAR and mm/sub-mm arrays such as ALMA required an expansion of the discussion of interferometers and aperture synthesis. Developments in data reduction algorithms have been included. As a result of the large amount of data collected in the past 20 years, the discussion of solar system radio astronomy, dust emission, and radio supernovae has been revisited. The chapters on spectral line emission have been updated to cover measurements of the neutral hydrogen radiation from the early universe as well as measurements with new facilities. Similarly the discussion of molecules in interstellar space has been expanded to include the molecular and dust emission from protostars and very cold regions. Several worked examples have been added in the areas of ??fundamental physics, such as pulsars. Both students and practicing astronomers will appreciate this new up-to-date edition of Tools of Radio Astronomy

PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2011.
DescriptionXVIII, 354 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe acquisition and interpretation of images is a central capability in almost all scientific and technological domains. In particular, the acquisition of electromagnetic radiation, in the form of visible light, UV, infrared, X-ray, etc. is of enormous practical importance. The ultimate sensitivity in electronic imaging is the detection of individual photons. With this book, the first comprehensive review of all aspects of single-photon electronic imaging has been created. Topics include theoretical basics, semiconductor fabrication, single-photon detection principles, imager design and applications of different spectral domains. Today, the solid-state fabrication capabilities for several types of image sensors has advanced to a point, where uncoooled single-photon electronic imaging will soon become a consumer product. This book is giving a specialist??s view from different domains to the forthcoming ???single-photon imaging??? revolution. The various aspects of single-photon imaging are treated by internationally renowned, leading scientists and technologists who have all pioneered their respective fields
