PublicationFrance, Springer, 2011.
Descriptionxv, 344p.;Euro 69.95
Series(Lecture note in physics)
Abstract NotePresents an excellent introduction to the field of helioseismology and asteroseismology. Carefully edited school-tested lecture notes With contributions by international experts. This volume of lecture notes brings together the knowledge on pulsations of the Sun and the stars, with a particular emphasis on recent observations and modelling, and on the influence of pulsations of other physical processes. The book begins with an extensive introduction to helioseismology. The solar cycle and gravity modes are discussed before the focus is widened from helioseismology to asteroseismology which is detailed in a series of specific chapters. Based on courses given at a graduate school, these tutorial lecture notes will be of interest and useful to a rather broad audience of scientists and students.

TitleAsteroseismology
Author(s)Conny Aerts;J. Christensen-Dalsgaard;D. W. Kurtz
PublicationDordrecht, Springer, 2010.
Descriptionxvi, 866p.
Series(Astronomy and Astrophysics Library)
Abstract Notehe recent research domain of asteroseismology studies the internal structure of stars, which is not directly observable, through the interpretation of the frequency spectra of stellar oscillations. The basic principles of asteroseismology are very similar to those developed by earth seismologists. Stellar interiors can be probed from oscillations because different oscillation modes penetrate to different depths inside the star. Asteroseismology is the only available method to derive the internal structure of the stars with high precision. This book offers a practical guide for graduate students and scientists working in stellar astrophysics. It provides a general introduction to asteroseismology and comprehensive coverage of all its aspects: fundamental theory, observations and observational techniques, methodology of data analysis and seismic interpretations of various classes of multi-periodic pulsating stars.
