Title | Plasmas: The First State of Matter |
Author(s) | Vinod Krishan |
Publication | Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, 2014. |
Description | xx, 250p. |
Abstract Note | This book discusses the phenomenal diversity of cosmic and terrestrial plasmas found in the early universe, galactic and intergalactic media, stellar atmospheres and their interiors, interstellar spaces, solar system and in the earth's ionosphere, and their observability with the most recent telescopes such as the Chandra X-ray telescope and gamma ray telescopes. It deals with different ways of creating plasmas such as thermal, pressure and radiative ionization for laboratory as well as cosmic plasmas. |

Title | Astrophysical flows |
Author(s) | James E Pringle;King Andrew |
Publication | Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, 2007 . |
Description | x, 206p. |
Abstract Note | Almost all conventional matter in the Universe is fluid, and fluid dynamics plays a crucial role in astrophysics. This graduate textbook, first published in 2007, provides a basic understanding of the fluid dynamical processes relevant to astrophysics. The mathematics used to describe these processes is simplified to bring out the underlying physics. The authors cover many topics, including wave propagation, shocks, spherical flows, stellar oscillations, the instabilities caused by effects such as magnetic fields, thermal driving, gravity, shear flows, and the basic concepts of compressible fluid dynamics and magnetohydrodynamics. The authors are Directors of the UK Astrophysical Fluids Facility (UKAFF) at the University of Leicester, and editors of the Cambridge Astrophysics Series. This book has been developed from a course in astrophysical fluid dynamics taught at the University of Cambridge. It is suitable for graduate students in astrophysics, physics and applied mathematics, and requires only a basic familiarity with fluid dynamics.

Title | Basic space plasma physics |
Author(s) | Wolfgang Baumjohann;Rudolf A. Treumann |
Edition | Rev. ed. |
Publication | New Jersey, Imperial College Press, 2012. |
Description | xvi, 479p. |
Abstract Note | This textbook begins with a description of the Earth's plasma environment, followed by the derivation of single particle motions in electromagnetic fields, with applications to the Earth's magnetosphere. Also discussed are the origin and effects of collisions and conductivities, formation of the ionosphere, magnetospheric convection and dynamics, and solar wind-magnetosphere coupling. The second half of the book presents a more theoretical foundation of plasma physics, starting with kinetic theory. Introducing moments of distribution function permits the derivation of the fluid equations, followed by an analysis of fluid boundaries, with the Earth's magnetopause and bow shock as examples, and finally, fluid and kinetic theory are applied to derive the relevant wave modes in a plasma. This revised edition seamlessly integrates new sections on magnetopause reconstruction, as well as instability theory and thermal fluctuations based on new developments in space physics. Applications such as the important problems of collisionless reconnection and collisionless shocks are covered, and some problems have also been included at the end of each chapter. |
