Title | The Early Universe : Facts and Fiction |
Author(s) | B??rner, Gerhard |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2003. |
Description | XVII, 593 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This fourth edition of B??rner's "The Early Universe" is practically a new book, not just an updated version. In particular, to meet the wishes of many readers, it is now organized so as to make it more useful as a textbook. Problem sections are also added. In the center are the connections between particle physics and cosmology: the standard model, some basic implications of quantum field theory, and the questions of structure formation. A special feature of the book is the comparison of theoretical predictions with observations, separating "facts from fiction". Special emphasis is given to the observed anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background and the consequences drawn for cosmology and for the structure formation models. Nuclear and particle physicists and astrophysicists, researchers and teachers as well as graduate students will welcome this new edition of a classic text and reference. In this corrected reprint first year results from WMAP have been added to take account of recent developments |

Title | Dynamical Systems and Cosmology |
Author(s) | Coley, A.A |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2003. |
Description | VIII, 195 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Dynamical systems theory is especially well-suited for determining the possible asymptotic states (at both early and late times) of cosmological models, particularly when the governing equations are a finite system of autonomous ordinary differential equations. In this book we discuss cosmological models as dynamical systems, with particular emphasis on applications in the early Universe. We point out the important role of self-similar models. We review the asymptotic properties of spatially homogeneous perfect fluid models in general relativity. We then discuss results concerning scalar field models with an exponential potential (both with and without barotropic matter). Finally, we discuss the dynamical properties of cosmological models derived from the string effective action. This book is a valuable source for all graduate students and professional astronomers who are interested in modern developments in cosmology |

Title | Organizations and Strategies in Astronomy |
Author(s) | Heck, Andre |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2000. |
Description | X, 221 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Research and publications in the field of Astronomy have undergone dramatic changes in the last half-century. While activities just slowed down during World War II in the US and in Latin America, they were very strongly affected by the difficult conditions prevailing among the European belligerent nations. Half a century ago, re?? search activities were mostly confined to observatories (linked or not to universities) and usually separated from the teaching of physical sciences. Hence, directors of observatories played an important role in the choice of the research fields, and "schools" of research appeared at various places, de?? veloping specific instrumentation, reduction techniques and mathematical methods to achieve their scientific goals. Reorganising the research activities after the war was no minor under?? taking, specially because communications were interrupted for over five years and isolated continental Europe from overseas activities. Scarcity of observing instruments (some of them being requisitioned by occupy?? ing armies) , enormous gaps in the available litterature led to local research activities, conducted independently of similar efforts undertaken elsewhere |

Title | Optical Detectors For Astronomy II : State-of-the-Art at the Turn of the Millennium |
Author(s) | Amico, Paola;Beletic, James W |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2000. |
Description | XXIV, 420 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | th The 4 ESO CCO Workshop, Optical Detectors for Astronomy, was held during September 13-16, 1999 at its usual location, the headquarters of the European Southern Observatory in Garching, Germany. We prefer to remember this workshop as a "meeting of friends", who came to Garching to visit ESO and to present their work, rather than a formal meeting. Based on our experience with the 1996 ESO CCO workshop, we deliberately put emphasis on creating an environment that encouraged the participants to stay together and informally exchange ideas. These informal events began with a tour of the BWM auto factory and continued with a reception at "SchloB Beletic", the conference dinner at a real SchloB of the Bavarian International School (where the participants enjoyed basket, baseball, table soccer, rock climbing and eventually dancing) and concluded with a tour of the Paulaner Brewery and dinner at the Seehaus in the Englisher Garten. The lunch "Biergarten", adjacent to the poster session area, was a daily meeting point. The result was a good mixture of excellent presentations and posters, collected in these Proceedings, and many occasions for people to get in touch and to have fun together, as witnessed by the selection of workshop pictures that we randomly placed between papers. This book contains a special contribution |

Title | Sensing with Terahertz Radiation |
Author(s) | Mittleman, Daniel |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2003. |
Description | XVI, 338 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Sensing with Terahertz Radiation reviews the state of the art in the generation, manipulation, and detection of electromagnetic radiation in the terahertz range. Recent years have seen a tremendous growth in research and development efforts in this spectral regime, spanning roughly from 0.3 THz to 10 THz. This has been spurred in part by several startling advances, involving non-linear optical materials, ultrafast optical and electronic techniques, and spectroscopic methods. As a result, there have been qualitative and significant improvements in the generation and detection of THz radiation. These have enabled a number of "real world" applications of THz technologies, in a manner which would not have been practical only a few years ago. A number of demonstrations and feasibility tests are discussed, which serve as compelling evidence of the utility of such techniques. Owing to the unique characteristics of THz radiation and its interactions with materials, these methods can have substantial advantages over other more conventional technologies. This text includes contributions on topics including time-domain spectroscopy based on both photoconductive and electro-optic sampling, photomixing, and all-electronic THz generation. advantages over other, competing technologies in a number of different areas |

Title | Atomic Physics at Accelerators: Stored Particles and Fundamental Physics : Proceedings of the APAC 2001, held in Aarhus, Denmark, 8???13 September 2001 |
Author(s) | Knudsen, Helge;Andersen, Jens Ulrik;Kluge, Heinz-J??rgen |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2003. |
Description | IX, 351 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This volume contains the proceedings of the third Euroconference on Atomic Phys?? ics at Accelerators (APAC 2001), with the title Stored Particles and Fundamental Physics. It was held in Aarhus, Denmark, from September 8 to 13 at the Marselis Hotel located near the beach and the Marselis Woods outside Aarhus, but some of the activities took place at the Department of Physics, University of Aarhus. The conference was sponsored by the Commission of the European Union (Contract No. ERBFMMACT980469) and also by the Danish Research Foundation through ACAP (Aarhus Center for Atomic Physics). The meeting was focused on the application of storage rings for atomic physics, and there are two fairly small rings in Aarhus, ASTRID (Aarhus STorage Ring for Ions,Denmark) and ELISA (ELectrostatic Ion Storage ring, Aarhus). The research at these rings has contributed to the strong position of European Science in this field. Both rings are designed according to unique concepts. ASTRID is a dual?? purpose ring, which half the time stores electrons for the generation of low-energy synchrotron radiation. The storage of negative particles has also been a unique feature for the application of ASTRID as an ion storage ring |

Title | Electroacoustical Reference Data |
Author(s) | Eargle, John |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 2002. |
Description | IX, 378 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The need for a general collection of electroacoustical reference and design data in graphical form has been felt by acousticians and engineers for some time. This type of data can otherwise only be found in a collection of handbooks. Therefore, it is the author's intention that this book serve as a single source for many electroacoustical reference and system design requirements. In form, the volume closely resembles Frank Massa's Acoustic Design Charts, a handy book dating from 1942 that has long been out of print. The basic format of Massa's book has been followed here: For each entry, graphical data are presented on the right page, while text, examples, and refer?? ences appear on the left page. In this manner, the user can solve a given problem without thumbing from one page to the next. All graphs and charts have been scaled for ease in data entry and reading. The book is divided into the following sections: A. General Acoustical Relationships. This section covers the behavior of sound transmis?? sion in reverberant and free fields, sound absorption and diffraction, and directional characteris?? tics of basic sound radiators. B. Loudspeakers. Loudspeakers are discussed in terms of basic relationships regarding cone excursion, sensitivity, efficiency, and directivity index, power ratings, and architectural layout. c. Microphones. The topics in this section include microphone sensitivity and noise rating, analysis of directional properties, stereo microphone array characteristics, proximity effects, and boundary conditions. D. Signal Transmission |
