Title | New Light on Dark Stars : Red Dwarfs, Low-Mass Stars, Brown Dwarfs |
Author(s) | Reid, Neill I;Hawley, Suzanne L |
Publication | London, Springer London, 2000. |
Description | XXV, 470 p. 172 illus., 5 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | Perhaps the most common question that a child asks when he or she sees the night sky from a dark site for the first time is: 'How many stars are there?' This happens to be a question which has exercised the intellectual skills of many astronomers over the course of most of the last century, including, for the last two decades, one of the authors of this text. Until recently, the most accurate answer was 'We are not certain, but there is a good chance that almost all of them are M dwarfs. ' Within the last three years, results from new sky-surveys - particularly the first deep surveys at near?? infrared wavelengths - have provided a breakthrough in this subject, solidifying our census of the lowest-mass stars and identifying large numbers of the hitherto almost mythical substellar-mass brown dwarfs. These extremely low-luminosity objects are the central subjects of this book, and the subtitle should be interpreted accordingly. The expression 'low-mass stars' carries a wide range of meanings in the astronomical literature, but is most frequently taken to refer to objects with masses comparable with that of the Sun - F and G dwarfs, and their red giant descendants. While this definition is eminently reasonable for the average extragalactic astronomer, our discussion centres on M dwarfs, with masses of no more than 60% that of the Sun, and extends to 'failed stars' - objects with insufficient mass to ignite central hydrogen fusion |

Title | Empirical Science of Financial Fluctuations : The Advent of Econophysics |
Author(s) | Takayasu, Hideki |
Publication | Tokyo, Springer Japan, 2002. |
Description | X, 352 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Financial fluctuations were generally neglected in classical ecnomics and their basic statistical properties have only recently been elucidated in the emerging field of econophysics, a new science that analyzes data using methods developed by statistical physics, such as chaos, fractals, and phase transitions. This volume is the proceedings of a workshop at which leading international researchers in this discipline discussed their most recent results and examined the validity of the empirical laws of econophysics. Topics include stock market prices and foreign exchange rates, income distribution, market anomalies, and risk management. The papers herein relate econophysics to other models, present new models, and illustrate the mechanisms by which financial fluctuations occur using actual financial data. Containing the most recent econophysics results, this volume will serve as an indispensable reference for economic theorists and practitioners alike |

Title | Astrometry of Fundamental Catalogues : The Evolution from Optical to Radio Reference Frames |
Author(s) | Walter, Hans G;Sovers, Ojars J |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2000. |
Description | XIV, 233 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Celestial fundamental catalogues are a prerequisite for the determination of absolute positions and motions in space. Presently, positional astrometry is at the watershed between classical fundamental catalogues, based on moving reference stars, and modern catalogues, based on extragalactic reference objects with non-measurable motion. This book addresses the concepts and methods of the respective construction techniques leading to the stellar frame of the FK5 (Fifth Fundamental Catalogue) and to the newly adopted extragalactic radio reference frame, ICRF (International Celestial Reference Frame), with its extension to optical wavelengths by the Hipparcos Catalogue. While principal outlines of meridian circle observations are given, emphasis is put in some detail on the VLBI technique as applied to astrometry, and to the observational techniques used in the Hipparcos mission, including the tie of the originally non-anchored rigid Hipparcos sphere into the ICRF |

Title | EMATs for Science and Industry : Noncontacting Ultrasonic Measurements |
Author(s) | Hirao, Masahiko;Ogi, Hirotsugu |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 2003. |
Description | X, 372 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | EMATs for Science and Industry comprises the physical principles of electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMATs) and the applications to scientific and industrial ultrasonic measurements on materials. The text is arranged in four parts: -PART I is intended to be a self-contained description of the basic elements of coupling mechanism along with practical designing of EMATs for various purposes. There are several implementations to compensate for the low transfer efficiency of the EMATs. Useful tips to make an EMAT are also presented. -PART II describes the principle of electromagnetic acoustic resonance (EMAR), which makes the most of contactless nature of EMATs and is the most successful amplification mechanism for precise velocity and attenuation measurements. -PART III applies EMAR to studying the physical acoustics. New measurements emerged on three major subjects; in situ monitoring of dislocation behavior, determination of anisotropic elastic constants, and acoustic nonlinearity evolution. -PART IV deals with a variety of individual topics encountered in industrial applications, for which the EMATs are believed to the best solutions |

Title | Fibre Optic Communication Devices |
Author(s) | Grote, Norbert;Venghaus, Herbert |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2001. |
Description | XXI, 465 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The book covers all essential elements of current and next generation fibre optic networks, including many that are ignored in other books. The reader gains an in-depth understanding of the current and future capabilities of fibre optic communication networks. He can estimate what fibre optics has to provide and where its (current and long-term) limitations may lie. Optoelectronic devices and glass fibres are the basis of contemporary communication systems. The book deals with the various components of these systems such as lasers, amplifiers, modulation devices, converters, optical switches, filters, detectors, emitters, sensors and fibre transfer systems. A systematic evaluation of the state of the art in related technological research and the level reached in application is given |

Title | Leadership and Creativity : A History of the Cavendish Laboratory, 1871???1919 |
Author(s) | Dong-Won Kim |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2002. |
Description | XXIV, 226 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Historical accounts of successful laboratories often consist primarily of reminiscences by their directors and the eminent people who studied or worked in these laboratories. Such recollections customarily are delivered at the celebration of a milestone in the history of the laboratory, such as the institution's fiftieth or one?? hundredth anniversary. Three such accounts of the Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambridge have been recorded. The first of these, A History of the Cavendish Laboratory, 1871-1910, was published in 1910 in honor of the twenty?? fifth anniversary of Joseph John Thomson's professorship there. The second, The Cavendish Laboratory, 1874-1974, was published in 1974 to commemorate the one?? hundredth anniversary of the Cavendish. The third, A Hundred Years and More of Cambridge Physics, is a short pamphlet, also published at the centennial of the 1 Cavendish. These accounts are filled with the names of great physicists (such as James Clerk Maxwell, Lord Rayleigh, J. J. Thomson, Ernest Rutherford, and William Lawrence Bragg), their glorious achievements (for example, the discoveries of the electron, the neutron, and DNA) and interesting anecdotes about how these achievements were reached. But surely a narrative that does justice to the history of a laboratory must recount more than past events. Such a narrative should describe a living entity and provide not only details of the laboratory's personnel, organization, tools, and tool kits, but should also explain how these components interacted within 2 their wider historical, cultural, and social contexts |
