TitleParticles and Nuclei : An Introduction to the Physical Concepts
Author(s)Povh, Bogdan;Rith, Klaus;Scholz, Christoph;Zetsche, Frank
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2002.
DescriptionXII, 393 p. 210 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis well-known introductory textbook gives a uniform presentation of nuclear and particle physics from an experimental point of view. The first part, Analysis, is devoted to disentangling the substructure of matter. This part shows that experiments designed to uncover the substructures of nuclei and nucleons have a similar conceptual basis, and lead to the present picture of all matter being constructed from a small number of elementary building blocks and a small number of fundamental interactions. The second part, Synthesis, shows how the elementary particles may be combined to build hadrons and nuclei. The fundamental interactions, which are responsible for the forces in all systems, become less and less evident in increasingly complex systems. Such systems are in fact dominated by many-body phenomena. In the third English edition a new section on neutrino oscillations and one on nuclear matter at high temperatures bridges the fields of 'nuclear and particle physics' and 'modern astrophysics and cosmology'. The concise text is based on lectures held at the University of Heidelberg and is well suited for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses. It includes numerous exercises with worked answers

TitleLaminar-Turbulent Transition : IUTAM Symposium, Sedona/AZ September 13 ??? 17, 1999
Author(s)Fasel, H.F;Saric, W.S
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2000.
DescriptionXXXIV, 686 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe origins of turbulent flow and the transition from laminar to turbulent flow are among the most important unsolved problems of fluid mechanics and aerodynamics. Besides being a fundamental question of fluid mechanics, there are any number of applications for information regarding transition location and the details of the subsequent turbulent flow. The JUT AM Symposium on Laminar-Turbulent Transition, co-hosted by Arizona State University and the University of Arizona, was held in Sedona, Arizona. Although four previous JUT AM Symposia bear the same appellation (Stuttgart 1979, Novosibirsk 1984, Toulouse 1989, and Sendai 1994) the topics that were emphasized at each were different and reflect the evolving nature of our understanding of the transition process. The major contributions of Stuttgart 1979 centered on nonlinear behavior and later stages of transition in two-dimensional boundary layers. Stability of closed systems was also included with Taylor vortices in different geometries. The topics of Novosibirsk 1984 shifted to resonant wave interactions and secondary instabilities in boundary layers. Pipe- and channel-flow transition were discussed as model problems for the boundary layer. Investigations of free shear layers were presented and a heavy dose of supersonic papers appeared for the first time. The character of Toulouse 1989 was also different in that 3-D boundary layers, numerical simulations, streamwise vortices, and foundation papers on receptivity were presented. Sendai 1994 saw a number of papers on swept wings and 3-D boundary layers. Numerical simulations attacked a broader range of problems

TitleThe Cosmology of Extra Dimensions and Varying Fundamental Constants : A JENAM 2002 Workshop Porto, Portugal 3???5 September 2002
Author(s)Martins, Carlos
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2003.
DescriptionVIII, 252 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe workshop on The Cosmology of Extra Dimensions and Varying Fundamental Constants, which was part of JENAM 2002, was held at the Physics Department of the University of Porto (FCUP) from the 3rd to the 5th of September 2002. It was regularly attended by about 110 participants, of which 65 were officially registered in the VFC workshop, while the others came from the rest of the JENAM workshops. There were also a few science correspondents from the national and international press. During the 3 days of the scientific programme, 8 Invited Reviews and 30 Oral Communications were presented. The speakers came from 11 different European countries, and also from Argentina, Australia, Canada, Japan and the U.S.A. There were also speakers from six Portuguese research institutions, and nine of the speak?? ers were Ph.D. students. The contributions are presented in these proceedings in chronological order. The workshop brought together string theorists, particle physicists, theoretical and observational cosmologists, relativists and observational astrophysicists. It was generally agreed that this inter-disciplinarity was the greatest strength of the work?? shop, since it provided people coming into this very recent topic from the various different backgrounds with an opportunity to understand each other's language and thereby gain a more solid understanding of the overall picture

TitleQuasicrystals : An Introduction to Structure, Physical Properties and Applications
Author(s)Suck, J.-B;Schreiber, M;H??ussler, P
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2002.
DescriptionXVIII, 564 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book provides a basic introduction to the structure and physical properties of quasicrystals, giving equal weight to experimental and theoretical progress. After introducing different aspects of tilings, including random tiling, the foundations of the crystallography of these aperiodic crystals is laid. The experimental investigation of the structure in real and reciprocal space is covered in detail, including high resolution electron microscopy, STM and AFM and electron-, X-ray- and especially neutron diffraction. The results of these experimental techniques are supplemented by the modelling of the atomic structure based on realistic ab initio pair interactions. A central role in aperiodic crystals is played by the electrons, which are most sensitive to the aperiodic atomic structure and are therefore discussed in detail:the surprising results of conduction measurements and the experimental investigation of the partial density of states for quasicrystals and their rational approximants are contrasted with the results from calculations of the electronic structure of quasicrystals. The vibrational properties of quasicrystalline alloys are extensively discussed on the basis of different computer simulations techniques and of the rich variety of experimental results obtained with mono- and polygrain quasicrystals and their approximants by neutron inelastic scattering. Likewise the magnetic properties of quasicrystalline alloys, which depend on the type of sample and show interesting transitions to different magnetic phases, are covered. The mechanical properties and the results from the investigation of defects in quasicrystals by experimental methods like electron microscopy and ion channeling and by extensive computer simulations of defects and fracture, which play a major role in the applications of quasicrystals, are presented. For the understanding of quasicrystal formation the properties of the undercooled liquid alloys, the details of the mostly extremely complicated phase diagrams, the reasons for the success of certain production techniques, the process of alloy growth, and the reasons for the stability of the non periodic crystal structure in competition with the periodic one must

TitleObservational Manifestation of Chaos in Astrophysical Objects : Invited talks for a workshop held in Moscow, Sternberg Astronomical Institute, 28???29 August 2000
Author(s)Fridman, Alexei;Marov, Mikhail Ya;Miller, Richard
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2002.
Description138 p : online resource
Abstract NoteOn August 2000 in the Lomonosov Moscow State University the first scientific conference dedicated to chaos in the real astronomical systems was held. The most prominent astrophysisists - specialist in the field of stochastic dynamics - attended the conference. A broad scope of the problems related to the observed manifes?? tations of chaotic motions in galactic and stellar objects, with the involvement of basic theory and numerical modeling, were addressed. The idea (not so obvious, as we believe, to many astrophysicists) was to show that, while great progress in the field of stochastic mechanics was accomplished, the science of chaos in actually observed systems is only just being born. Basically, the situation described prompted the organizers to hold the meeting in order to discuss chaotic processes in real systems. It seemed worthwhile to begin these introductory remarks with a brief descrip?? tion of some events that preceeded the conference. Since actually existing systems are the subject of the natural sciences, and in the latter experiments play the key role, we shall begin our account with the experimental results
