TitleFrom Cells to Societies : Models of Complex Coherent Action
Author(s)Mikhailov, Alexander S;Calenbuhr, Vera
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2002.
DescriptionX, 302 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book shows how, by rather simple models, we can gain remarkable insights into the behavior of complex systems. It is devoted to the discussion of functional self-organization in large populations of interacting active elements. The possible forms of self-organization in such systems range from coherent collective motions in the physical coordinate space to the mutual synchronization of internal dynamics, the development of coherently operating groups, the rise of hierarchical structures, and the emergence of dynamical networks. Such processes play an important role in biological and social phenomena. The authors have chosen a series of models from physics, biochemistry, biology, sociology and economics, and will systematically discuss their general properties. The book addresses researchers and graduate students in a variety of disciplines, such as physics, chemistry, biology and the social sciences

TitleThe Alfonsine Tables of Toledo
Author(s)Chab??s, Jos??;Goldstein, B.R
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2003.
DescriptionXIII, 341 p. 4 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThe Alfonsine Tables of Toledo is for historians working in the fields of astronomy, science, the Middle Ages, Spanish and other Romance languages. It is also of interest to scholars interested in the history of Castile, in Castilian-French relations in the Middle Ages and in the history of patronage. It explores the Castilian canons of the Alfonsine Tables and offers a study of their context, language, astronomical content, and diffusion. The Alfonsine Tables of Toledo is unique in that it: includes an edition of a crucial text in history of science; provides an explanation of astronomy as it was practiced in the Middle Ages; presents abundant material on early scientific language in Castilian; presents new material on the diffusion of Alfonsine astronomy in Europe; describes the role of royal patronage of science in a medieval context

TitleAnderson Localization and Its Ramifications : Disorder, Phase Coherence, and Electron Correlations
Author(s)Brandes, Tobias;Kettemann, Stefan
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2003.
DescriptionXII, 315 p. 10 illus., 3 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThe phenomenon of localization of the electronic wave function in a random medium can be regarded as the key manifestation of quantum coherence in a condensed matter system. As one of the most remarkable phenomena in condensed matter physics discovered in the 20th century, the localization problem is an indispensable part of the theory of the quantum Hall effects and rivals superconductivity in its significance as a manifestation of quantum coherence at a macroscopic scale. The present volume, written by some of the leading experts in the field, is intended to highlight some of the recent progress in the field of localization, with particular emphasis on the effect of interactions on quantum coherence. The chapters are written in textbook style and should serve as a reliable and thorough introduction for advanced students or researchers already working in the field of mesoscopic physics

TitleCP Violation in Particle, Nuclear, and Astrophysics
Author(s)Beyer, Michael
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2002.
DescriptionXII, 340 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book provides a collection of up-to-date lectures on the physics of CP violation. As such it covers all relevant modern fields of elementary particle, nuclear and astrophysics. Special attention is paid to the neutral meson systems and the recent confirmation of CP violation in the B meson system. The theory and the novel methods needed for these experiments are given in detail. The classical and ongoing searches for the electric dipole moment of the neutron and other null tests of time-reversal symmetry are included. An elementary introduction is given to the astrophysical implications of CP violation, to tackle the puzzle of matter--antimatter asymmetry in our Universe. The aim of the book is to present recent achievements and discuss future developments in a way accessible to both postgraduate students and nonspecialist researchers. For the experienced researcher, the book will serve as a modern source of reference on this topic

TitleMultielement System Design in Astronomy and Radio Science
Author(s)Kopilovich, L.E;Sodin, L.G
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2001.
DescriptionX, 190 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe multielement systems have been widely used in many fields of astron?? omy and radio science in the last decades. This is caused by the increasing demands on the resolution and sensitivity of such systems over the wide range of the electromagnetic wavelengths, from gamma up to radio. The ground-based optical and radio interferometers, gamma-ray and X-ray or?? bital telescopes, antenna arrays of radio telescopes and also some other radio devices belong to scientific instruments using multielement systems. There?? fore, the current problems of the optimal construction of such systems, or precisely, those of searching for the best arrangement of the elements in them, were formulated. A rather large number of scientific papers, including those of the authors, is devoted to these problems, and we believe that the time has come to integrate the basic results of the papers into the mono?? graph. The offered book consists of three parts. The first part is concerned with the optimal synthesis of optical and radio interferometers of various types and purposes; the synthesis of non-equidistant antenna arrays is con?? sidered in the second part; and the methods for the construction of coded masks for X-ray and gamma-ray orbital telescopes are expounded in the third one. Since in the text combinatorial constructions which are little known to astronomers are used, the necessary information is given in the appendices. Various tables containing the parameters of the systems consid?? ered are also represented

TitleThe Blue Laser Diode : The Complete Story
Author(s)Nakamura, Shuji;Pearton, Stephen;Fasol, Gerhard
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2000.
DescriptionXVI, 368 p. 98 illus., 17 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteShuji Nakamura developed the first commercially available blue and green light emitting diodes and the first blue semiconductor laser based on GaN. GaN and its related compounds allow the fabrication of highly efficient light emitters and lasers ranging from red through yellow and green to blue in a single material. In this book the scientific basis of GaN light emitting devices and the physical concept and basic manufacturing technology of these new blue light emitting diodes and laser diodes are discussed. The breakthrough in GaN technology opens many new commercial applications for semiconductors, including displays, road and railway signalling, lighting, scanners, optical data storage, and much more. The new application field of power devices is also discussed. This second edition is not only updated but also significantly enlarged. The whole spectrum of GaN related materials, processing and application problems is contained, thus making this book the most comprehensive basic book in the field. It also tells the fascinating story of the extremely successful realization of Nakamura's research and development concept. The book will appeal to both researchers and engineers
