TitleMeasurement of the Top Quark Mass in the Dilepton Final State Using the Matrix Element Method
Author(s)Grohsjean, Alexander
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2010.
DescriptionX, 150 p. 73 illus., 25 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThe top quark, discovered in 1995 at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, is the heaviest known elementary particle. The precise knowledge of its mass yields important constraints on the mass of the as-yet-undiscovered Higgs boson and allows one to probe for physics beyond the Standard Model. With an excellent adaptation of a novel measurement technique, described and applied here for the first time, the sensitivity to the top quark mass in the dilepton final state at the D0 experiment could be improved by more than 30%. Moreover, an extension to the method is presented which allows future measurements to significantly reduce the main limiting systematic uncertainty

TitleQuantum Superposition : Counterintuitive Consequences of Coherence, Entanglement, and Interference
Author(s)Silverman, Mark P
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2008.
DescriptionXIII, 379 p : online resource
Abstract NoteCoherence, entanglement, and interference arise from quantum superposition, the most distinctive and puzzling feature of quantum physics. Silverman, whose extensive experimental and theoretical work has helped elucidate these processes, presents a clear and engaging discussion of the role of quantum superposition in diverse quantum phenomena such as the wavelike nature of particle propagation, indistinguishability of identical particles, nonlocal interactions of correlated particles, topological effects of magnetic fields, and chiral asymmetry in nature. He also examines how macroscopic quantum coherence may be able to extricate physics from its most challenging quandary, the collapse of a massive degenerate star to a singularity in space in which the laws of physics break down. Explained by a physicist with a concern for clarity and experimental achievability, the extraordinary nature of quantum superposition will fascinate the reader not only for its apparent strangeness, but also for its comprehensibility

TitleStrongly Correlated Systems : Numerical Methods
Author(s)Avella, Adolfo;Mancini, Ferdinando
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2013.
DescriptionXXVIII, 325 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis volume presents, for the very first time, an exhaustive collection of those modern numerical methods specifically tailored for the analysis of Strongly Correlated Systems. Many novel materials, with functional properties emerging from macroscopic quantum behaviors at the frontier of modern research in physics, chemistry and material science, belong to this class of systems. Any technique is presented in great detail by its own inventor or by one of the world-wide recognized main contributors. The exposition has a clear pedagogical cut and fully reports on the most relevant case study where the specific technique showed to be very successful in describing and enlightening the puzzling physics of a particular strongly correlated system. The book is intended for advanced graduate students and post-docs in the field as textbook and/or main reference, but also for other researchers in the field who appreciate consulting a single, but comprehensive, source or wishes to get acquainted, in a as painless as possible way, with the working details of a specific technique

TitleHyperbolic Chaos : A Physicist???s View
Author(s)Kuznetsov, Sergey P
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2012.
DescriptionXVI, 320 p. 80 illus : online resource
Abstract Note"Hyperbolic Chaos: A Physicist???s View??? presents recent progress on uniformly hyperbolic attractors in dynamical systems from a physical rather than mathematical perspective (e.g. the Plykin attractor, the Smale ??? Williams solenoid). The structurally stable attractors manifest strong stochastic properties, but are insensitive to variation of functions and parameters in the dynamical systems. Based on these characteristics of hyperbolic chaos, this monograph shows how to find hyperbolic chaotic attractors in physical systems and how to design a physical systems that possess hyperbolic chaos. ?? This book is designed as a reference work for university professors and researchers in the fields of physics, mechanics, and engineering. ?? Dr. Sergey P. Kuznetsov is a professor at the Department of Nonlinear Processes, Saratov State University, Russia. ??

TitleComplex Plasmas : Scientific Challenges and Technological Opportunities
Author(s)Bonitz, Michael;Lopez, Jose;Becker, Kurt;Thomsen, Hauke
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2014.
DescriptionXIII, 491 p. 240 illus., 127 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book provides the reader with an introduction to the physics of complex plasmas, a discussion of the specific scientific and technical challenges they present, and an overview of their potential technological applications. Complex plasmas differ from conventional high-temperature plasmas in several ways: they may contain additional species, including nanometer- to micrometer-sized particles, negative ions, molecules and radicals, and they may exhibit strong correlations or quantum effects. This book introduces the classical and quantum mechanical approaches used to describe and simulate complex plasmas. It also covers some key experimental techniques used in the analysis of these plasmas, including calorimetric probe methods, IR absorption techniques and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The final part of the book reviews the emerging applications of microcavity and microchannel plasmas, the synthesis and assembly of nanomaterials through plasma electrochemistry, the large-scale generation of ozone using microplasmas, and novel applications of atmospheric-pressure non-thermal plasmas in dentistry. Going beyond the scope of traditional plasma texts, the presentation is very well suited for senior undergraduate, graduate students and postdoctoral researchers specializing in plasma physics
