TitleThe New Amateur Astronomer
Author(s)Mobberley, Martin
PublicationLondon, Springer London, 2004.
DescriptionX, 229 p. 222 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteAmateur astronomy has changed beyond recognition in less than two decades. The reason is, of course, technology. Affordable high-quality telescopes, computer-controlled 'go to' mountings, autoguiders, CCD cameras, video, and (as always) computers and the Internet, are just a few of the advances that have revolutionized astronomy for the twenty-first century. Martin Mobberley first looks at the basics before going into an in-depth study of what???s available commercially. He then moves on to the revolutionary possibilities that are open to amateurs, from imaging, through spectroscopy and photometry, to patrolling for near-earth objects - the search for comets and asteroids that may come close to, or even hit, the earth. The New Amateur Astronomer is a road map of the new astronomy, equally suitable for newcomers who want an introduction, or old hands who need to keep abreast of innovations. From the reviews: "This is one of several dozen books in Patrick Moore's "Practical Astronomy" series. Amid this large family, Mobberley finds his niche: the beginning high-tech amateur. The book's first half discusses equipment: computer-driven telescopes, CCD cameras, imaging processing software, etc. This market is changing every bit as rapidly as the computer world, so these details will be current for only a year or two. The rest of the book offers an overview of scientific projects that serious amateurs are carrying out these days. Throughout, basic formulas and technical terms are provided as needed, without formal derivations. An appendix with useful references and Web sites is also included. Readers will need more than this book if they are considering a plunge into high-tech amateur astronomy, but it certainly will whet their appetites. Mobberley's most valuable advice will save the book's owner many times its cover price: buy a quality telescope from a reputable dealer and install it in a simple shelter so it can be used with as little set-up time as possible. A poor purchase choice and the hassle of setting up are why most fancy telescopes gather dust in their owners' dens. Summing Up: Highly recommended. General readers; lower- and upper-division undergraduates."( T. D. Oswalt, CHOICE, March 2005)

TitleL'astrofilo moderno
Author(s)Mobberley, Martin
PublicationMilano, Springer Milan, 2007.
DescriptionIX, 229 pagg : online resource

TitleImaging planetario : Guida all'uso della webcam
Author(s)Mobberley, Martin
PublicationMilano, Springer Milan, 2008.
DescriptionXI, 229 pagg : online resource
Abstract NoteLe economiche webcam stanno rivoluzionando l???imaging astronomico amatoriale, fornendo un???alternativa conveniente ai CCD raffreddati, quanto meno per i soggetti pi?? luminosi.

DescriptionXVI, 240 p. 100 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteASTRONOMERS??? OBSERVING GUIDES provide up-to-date information for amateur astronomers who want to know all about what it is they are observing. This is the basis of the first part of the book. The second part details observing techniques for practical astronomers, working with a range of different instruments. This book invites you to observe the most spectacular, high-energy events taking place in the cosmos. Even though these events may occur hundreds, thousands, millions or even billions of light-years away, you can witness them using the naked eye, binoculars, or telescopes. The book covers cataclysmic variable stars (CV???s), novae and dwarf novae, recurrent novae, solar flares, flare stars and prominences as well as the more distant supernovae, hypernovae, blazars, quasars, and gamma ray bursters. There are also sections on photometry, equipment, and software as well as many valuable observing tips based on the author???s own experience viewing these events. For the amateur astronomer who is ready to leave the confines of the Solar System and look out into deep space, this book offers a variety of exciting challenges and suggestions enabling you to contribute real scientific data on high energy outbursts and cataclysmic cosmic events with just your backyard telescope and a bit of know-how

TitleTotal Solar Eclipses and How to Observe Them
Author(s)Mobberley, Martin
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 2007.
DescriptionXIV, 202 p. 115 illus., 38 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteEvery total solar eclipse sees cruise ships or coach convoys, and frequently both, conveying to thousands of observers the narrow umbral track, where they can witness this rare and beautiful astronomical event, weather permitting. But for each total solar eclipse you get just a few minutes (or seconds) to make the most of the spectacle, savor it visually, and record the event. You have to get it right first time, which is where Total Solar Eclipses and How to Observe Them comes in. Here is all the information an eclipse chaser needs to ensure a trouble-free expedition. Martin Mobberley explains how to avoid equipment and set-up errors thousands of miles from home, advises on the right equipment to buy for observing and digital SLR imaging, and explains the crucial points to address when traveling abroad with astronomical equipment. The first part of the book contains a wealth of information about total solar eclipses themselves: how and why they happen, related physics of the Sun, the alignment geometries, and, of course, the astronomical features that can only be witnessed when our Moon precisely covers the solar disk

TitleLunar and Planetary Webcam User's Guide
Author(s)Mobberley, Martin
PublicationLondon, Springer London, 2006.
DescriptionXII, 230 p. 80 illus., 20 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteInexpensive webcams are revolutionizing imaging in amateur astronomy by providing an affordable alternative to cooled-chip astronomical CCD cameras, for photographing the brighter astronomical objects. Webcams ??? costing only a few tens of dollars ??? are capable of more advanced high resolution work than "normal" digital cameras because their rapid image download speed can freeze fine planetary details, even through the Earth's turbulent atmosphere. Also, their simple construction makes it easy to remove the lens, allowing them to be used at high power at the projected focus of an astronomical telescope. Webcams also connect direct to a PC, so that software can be used to "stack" multiple images, providing a stunning increase in image quality. In the Lunar and Planetary Webcam User???s Guide Martin Mobberley de-mystifies the jargon of webcams and computer processing, and provides detailed hints and tips for imaging the Sun, Moon and planets with a webcam. He looks at each observing target separately, describing and explaining all specialised techniques in context. Glance through the images in this book to see just how much you can ??? easily ??? achieve by using a webcam with your telescope!

TitleThe Caldwell Objects and How to Observe Them
Author(s)Mobberley, Martin
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 2009.
DescriptionXIV, 273 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThere have been only a handful of famous deep sky "catalogs," including Charles Messier???s, which was the first and remains the most famous. Messier was a comet hunter, and in the late 1700s he published a list of 109 objects in the sky that were not comets. In December 1995, Sky & Telescope published a list of deep sky objects sent to them by British amateur astronomer extraordinare, Sir Patrick Moore (officially, Sir Patrick Caldwell-Moore). It was a huge hit! Sir Patrick may be the most prolific authors of astronomy books for all time and has been presenting the BBC Sky at Night television series since April 1957. Moore???s list contained 109 non-Messier objects that were Patrick???s favorites, many of them visible only in the southern hemisphere. Accompanying the list of objects were long exposure black and white and color photographs of some of these objects. In this book Martin Mobberley, who has known Sir Patrick Moore for many years, describes these objects and tells how to locate them. He discusses the best ways to visually observe them and image them. He also tells a little of Moore???s life and observing practices and how he made his choices for the "catalog." If you???re wanting a challenge for your newly acquired telescope, or are interested in seeing what others have highlighted as some of the greatest sights in the night sky, this book will set you on the path of discovery

TitleIt Came From Outer Space Wearing an RAF Blazer! : A Fan's Biography of Sir Patrick Moore
Author(s)Mobberley, Martin
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2013.
DescriptionXXVI, 655 p. 80 illus., 30 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteTo British television viewers, the name ???Patrick Moore??? has been synonymous with Astronomy and Space Travel since he first appeared on The Sky at Night in 1957. To amateur astronomers he has been a source of inspiration, joy, humour and even an eccentric role model since that time. Most people know that his 55 years of presenting The Sky at Night is a world record, but what was he really like in person??? What did he do away from the TV cameras, in his observatory, and within the British Astronomical Association, the organisation that inspired him as a youngster? Also, precisely what did he do during the War Years, a subject that has always been shrouded in mystery? Martin Mobberley, a friend of Patrick Moore???s for 30 years, and a former President of the British Astronomical Association, has spent ten years exhaustively researching Patrick???s real life away from the TV cameras. His childhood, RAF service, tireless voluntary work for astronomy and charity and his endless book writing are all examined in detail. His astronomical observations are also examined in unprecedented detail, along with the battles he fought along the way and his hatred of bureaucracy and political correctness. No fan of Sir Patrick Moore can possibly live without this work on their bookshelf!

TitleHunting and Imaging Comets
Author(s)Mobberley, Martin
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 2011.
DescriptionXIV, 394 p. 170 illus., 20 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteOf all the objects visible in the night sky, it is the brightest comets that have most fascinated amateur astronomers and alarmed the human population. No other objects can stretch as far across the sky as the tail of a truly great comet, or be as easily visible as a zero-magnitude ???broom star.??? In recent times amateur astronomers have made some surprising discoveries, including the comets Hale-Bopp and Hyakutake, while also playing a critical role in detecting the comets that hit Jupiter in 1994 and 2009. It was also an amateur astronomer??that first spotted the dazzling October 2007 outburst of 17P/Holmes. Discovering a comet has always been the greatest prize for the amateur astronomer ??? the chance to truly ???write your name across the sky.??? Remarkably, despite routine professional CCD surveys, many amateurs worldwide still discover comets in the 21st century. In Hunting and Imaging Comets Martin Mobberley, an active comet imager himself, explains how non-professionals have achieved such success. This book describes in precise detail how amateur astronomers can find comets and capture spectacular images of them using modern telescopes, CCDs, and digital SLRs. Mobberley also explains how computer software can be used to measure the positions and brightness magnitudes of comets to a professional standard and how to submit those scientific results to the astronomical community. If you want to search for new comets, or simply observe known ones, this is the book for you!
