| Title | Visual Astronomy in the Suburbs : A Guide to Spectacular Viewing |
| Author(s) | Cooke, Antony |
| Publication | London, Springer London, 2003. |
| Description | XII, 268 p : online resource |
| Abstract Note | Most amateur astronomers, because they live in or near cities, have to carry out their observing from relatively light-polluted sites. It is possible to reduce the effects of a poor location by the use of CCD imaging, but many observers prefer to look at astronomical objects rather than photograph them. Skill, observing techniques, and modern technology - such as image intensifiers - can now be used to astonishing effect to observe the night sky in real-time. Illustrating the book with images and some of his own superb drawings, Antony Cooke explains how to observe some of the most spectacular objects from less than perfect observing sites |

| Description | X, 180 p. 117 illus : online resource |
| Abstract Note | Patrick Moore???s Practical Astronomy Series VISUAL ASTRONOMY UNDER DARK SKIES A New Approach to Observing Deep Space Modern astronomical telescopes, along with other advances in technology, have brought the deep sky ??? star clusters, nebulae and the galaxies ??? within visual reach of amateur astronomers. It isn???t necessary to image deep-sky objects in order to see them; you look at them in real-time by using modern observing techniques and enhancement technology. The first requirement is a truly dark observing site. Given a location with clear, dark night skies everything else follows??? this book contains all you need to know about what to observe, how to get superb views of faint and distant astronomical objects, and how to use the best of today???s commercial equipment for visual observing |

| Description | XII, 259 p. 81 illus., 20 illus. in color : online resource |
| Abstract Note | Make Time for the Stars: Fitting Astronomy into Your Busy Life Antony Cooke Hungry for an opportunity to study the stars but have little or no time to do it? Then this book is for you! Perhaps you have a telescope from years ago, which you used a few times, then put it away in a closet, where it has been gathering dust ever since. Could you still use that telescope, or do you have to buy a new one? And what about all the gadgets on the market now? Which ones do you really need? About how much will it all cost you, and what should you look for when you finally have a night out to look? Antony Cooke will give you those answers, and outline a program for star (and Solar System) gazing that you will be able to fit into your busy life. He tells why it is imperative to get yourself the right equipment from the start (without breaking the bank!) and why he thinks it is important to focus on live viewing rather than fancy gadgetry and imaging techniques. Full of sound advice and lots of encouragement, you will come away from this book prepared to take up your old hobby with new vigor and finally get the pleasure you knew was possible from studying our neighbors in space |

| Author(s) | Cooke, Antony |
| Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 2012. |
| Description | XI, 243 p. 75 illus : online resource |
| Abstract Note | As probably the only book of its type, this work is aimed at the observer who wants to spend time with something less conventional than the usual fare. Because we usually see objects in space by means of illumination of one kind or another, it has become routine to see them only in these terms. However, part of almost everything that we see is??the defining dimension of dark shading, or even the complete obscuration of entire regions in space. Thus this book is focused on everything dark in space: those dark voids in the stellar fabric that mystified astronomers of old; the dark lanes reported in many star clusters; the magical dust belts or dusty regions that have given so many galaxies their identities; the great swirling 'folds' that we associate with bright nebulae; the small dark feature detectable even in some planetary nebulae; and more. Many observers pay scant attention to dark objects and details. Perhaps they are insufficiently aware of them or of the viewing potential they hold, but also it may be because of the various viewing challenges that dark objects pose. Discussions on viewing methods and the best equipment for a wide cross section of these objects are included, along with many detailed descriptions. The book contains virtually every dark object worth the observer's attention. Whether viewing live through the eyepiece or indirectly through CCD or other imaging techniques, this unique compendium and discussion of all things dark in space will hopefully prove compelling and rewarding |

| Title | Astronomy and the Climate Crisis |
| Author(s) | Cooke, Antony |
| Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 2012. |
| Description | XVIII, 280 p. 99 illus., 96 illus. in color : online resource |
| Abstract Note | Climate change is one of the most hotly debated issues of today. Increasing global temperatures will impact all of us. There are more questions than answers, however, and sweeping statements on the subject made by public figures, often with little scientific understanding, only further confuses public opinion. Astronomical factors, apart from passing references to the Sun, are given short shrift in relation to climate change. However, they might be amongst the major determinants of it.?? A presentation of those that have been studied that some scientists suspect might be involved are featured in this book. Included is an in-depth look at the physics of climate itself, the potential effects of the Sun, solar storms, sunspots, solar variability, the magnetosphere, solar cycles, influences of nearby planets, orbital factors, cosmic rays, possible galactic influences, monitoring from space, even climate change elsewhere in the solar system, and much more. The greatest challenge climate change scientists face is determining actual world climate statistics and analyzing the historical record. Another challenge lies in evaluating all of the various theories that have been proposed. Is the current climate crisis completely human-induced, as some very credible sources say, or only partly human-induced.? Is carbon dioxide even the real threat? If not, what is? Astronomy and the Climate Crisis is a serious attempt to reconcile the various scientific climate change studies, highlighting in particular the astronomical factors that are possibly hidden culprits. This book can help you to become informed and join the debate. You might be very surprised at what you find out! ?? |
