Abstract Note | The 11th International Symposium on Superconductivity was held November 16-19, 1998, in Fukuoka, Japan. Convened annually since 1988, the symposium covers the whole field of superconductivity from fundamental physics and chemistry to new applications. At the 11th Symposium, there was increased interest reported in the development of trial devices using bismuth wires and yttrium-based bulk materials. Among the presentations were those that clearly defined the development targets for next-generation yttrium-based wires and bulk materials and single-flux quantum (SFQ) circuits. Other popular topics were high-temperature superconductivity applications such as SQUIDs, microwave filters, and cryocooler-cooled magnets. With more than 600 participants from 18 countries, the symposium provided an excellent forum for exchanges of the most recent information in the field of superconductivity |

Abstract Note | Ferromagnetism of metallic systems, especially those including transition metals, has been a controversial subject of modern science for a long time. This controversy sterns from the apparent dual character of the d-electrons responsible for magnetism in transition metals, i.e., they are itinerant elec?? trons described by band theory in their ground state, while at finite tem?? peratures they show various properties that have long been attributed to a system consisting of local magnetic moments. The most familiar example of these properties is the Curie-Weiss law of magnetic susceptibility obeyed by almost all ferromagnets above their Curie temperatures. At first the problem seemed to be centered around whether the d-elec?? trons themselves are localized or itinerant. This question was settled in the 1950s and early 1960s by various experimental investigations, in particular by observations of d-electron Fermi surfaces in ferromagnetic transition metals. These observations are generally consistent with the results of band calculations. Theoretical investigations since then have concentrated on explaining this dual character of d-electron systems, taking account of the effects of electron-electron correlations in the itinerant electron model. Abstract Note | The research of unitary concepts in solid state and molecular chemistry is of current interest for both chemist and physicist communities. It is clear that due to their relative simplicity, low?? dimensional materials have attracted most of the attention. Abstract Note | The genesis of the NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) upon which this volume is based, occurred during the summer of 1986 when we came to the realization that there had been significant progress during the early 1980's in the field of superconducting electronics and in applications of this technology. Despite this progress, there was a perception among many engineers and scientists that, with the possible exception of a limited number of esoteric fundamental studies and applications (e.g., the Josephson voltage standard or the SQUID magnetometer), there was no significant future for electronic systems incorporating superconducting elements. One of the major reasons for this perception was the aversion to handling liquid helium or including a closed-cycle helium liquefier. In addition, many critics felt that IBM's cancellation of its superconducting computer project in 1983 was "proof" that superconductors could not possibly compete with semiconductors in high-speed signal processing. From our perspective, the need for liquid helium was outweighed by improved performance, i. e., higher speed, lower noise, greater sensitivity and much lower power dissipation. For many commercial, medical, scientific and military applications, these attributes can lead to either enhanced capability (e.g., compact real-time signal processing) or measurements that cannot be made using any other technology (e.g., SQUID magnetometry to detect neuromagnetic activity) |
