TitleAdvances in Nuclear Science and Technology
Author(s)Lewins, Jeffery;Becker, Martin
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1997.
DescriptionXIX, 281 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe present review volume not only covers a wide range of topics pertinent to nuclear science and technology, but has attracted a distinguished international authorship, for which the editors are grateful. The opening review by Drs. Janet Tawn and Richard Wakeford addresses the difficult matter of questioning sci- tific hypotheses in a court of law. The United Kingdom experienced a substantial nuclear accident in the 1950s in the form of the Windscale Pile fire. This in itself had both good and bad consequences; the setting up of a licensing authority to ensure nuclear safety was one, the understandable public sentiment concerning nuclear power (despite the fire occurring in a weapons pile) the other. Windscale today is subsumed in the reprocessing plant at Sellafield operated by British Nuclear Fuels plc and it was inevitable perhaps that when an excess cluster of childhood leukaemia was observed in the nearby village of Seascale that public concern should be promoted by the media, leading to the hearing of a claim of compensation brought on behalf of two of the families of BNFLs workers who had suffered that loss. The review article demonstrates the complexity of und- standing such a claim against the statistical fluctuations inherent and shows how the courts were persuaded of the need to propose a biological mechanism if responsibility were to be held. The Company were undoubtedly relieved by the finding

TitleAdvances in Nuclear Science and Technology
Author(s)Lewins, Jeffery;Becker, Martin
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1996.
DescriptionXVII, 194 p. 4 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThe editors have pleasure in presenting this volume of our review series. We have specialised in three areas: perturbation Monte Carlo, non-linear kinetics and the transfer of radioactive fluids in rocks. These contributions are linked, however, in the demands for optimising complex systems that are a feature of the scale of nuclear power production. Kuniharu Kishida???s account of Japanese thinking in the application of modern non-linear theory to reactor kinetics and control comes at a time when the community of control scholars is seeking how to apply the new ideas that have led to the prominence of chaos theory to our field. Pr- lems of maintenance in power reactors are as severe as ever and must be solved for credibility to characterise any new program. As much as 30% of unanticipated down-time, for example, is due to the failure of motor op- ated valves. We need a theory to provide for preventive maintenance. This in turn depends heavily on on-line monitoring to anticipate failure as well as expert systems to schedule preventive treatment. Noise theory with its promise of on-line interpretation of information from inchoate breakdown is the key. It is all too likely that the need to deal with major departures makes a non-linear theory of noise essential. We can be grateful that P- fessor Kishida has provided us with such a consistent account

TitleTransport and Thermal Properties of f-Electron Systems
Author(s)Fujii, H;Fujita, T;Oomi, G
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1993.
DescriptionIX, 311 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe Hiroshima Workshop on Transport and Thermal Properties of f-Electron Systems, T2PfS, was held in the hotel Greenpia Yasuura on the shores of the Seto Inland Sea near Hiroshima, Japan from August 30, to September 2, 1992, as a satellite meeting of the International Conference of Strongly Correlated Electron Systems in Sendai. The purpose of this workshop was to bring together those scientists who are actively involved in the research of 4f- and 5f-electron systems; particularly the transport and thermal properties such as electrical resistivity, Hall effect, thermoelectric power, thermal conductivity, thermal expansion and specific heat. Hence, the organizing committee limited the number of participants to 60; 25 from abroad and 35 from Japan. In the workshop, all the sessions consisted of oral presentations; 25 invited talks and 5 contributed talks, including at least 10 minutes of discussion for each presentation. The program was divided into the following five topics: [1] Kondo-lattice semiconductors, [2] superconductivity of f-electron systems, [3] anomalous transport and thermal properties of 4f- and 5f-compounds, [4] low-carrier heavy-electron systems and [5] theoretical investigation of heavy-electron and mixed-valence states. This division of topics has been retained in the organization of papers in this volume. Almost all of the invited and contributed papers are included. These papers include excellent reviews of both the recent advances and historical background of each topic. We believe this book would be a tutorial text for researchers working in the field of solid state physics

TitleTrends in Atomic and Molecular Physics
Author(s)Sud, Krishan K;Upadhyaya, Upendra N
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1999.
DescriptionXI, 427 p : online resource
Abstract NoteContemporary research in atomic and molecular physics concerns itself with studies of interactions of electron, positron, photons, and ions with atoms, molecules, and clusters; interactions of intense ultrashort laser interaction with atoms, molecules, and solids; laser assisted atomic collisions, optical, and magnetic traps of neutral atoms to produce ultracold and dense samples; high resolution atomic spectroscopy and experiments by using synchrotron radiation sources and ion storage rings. In recent years, important advances have been made in the experimental as well as theoretical understanding of atomic and molecular physics. The advances in atomic and molecu?? lar physics have helped us to understand many other fields, like astrophyics, atmo?? spheric physics, environmental science, laser physics, surface physics, computational physics, photonics, and electronics. XII National Conference on Atomic and Molecular Physics was held at the Physics Department, M. 1. S. University, Udaipur from 29th Dec. 1998 to 2ndJan. 1999 under the auspices of the Indian Society of Atomic and Molecular Physics. This volume is an outcome of the contributions from the invited speakers at the conference. The volume contains 24 articles contributed by the distinguished scientists in the field. The contrib?? utors have covered a wide range of topics in the field in which current research is being done. This also reflects the trend of research in this field in Indian universities and research institutes. We are grateful to the national programme committee, national, and local organiz?? ing committees, and members of the Physics Department and Computer Centre, M. 1

TitleQuantum Field Theory and String Theory
Author(s)Baulieu, L;Dotsenko, Vladimir;Kazakov, Vladimir;Windey, Paul
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1995.
DescriptionX, 420 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe Cargese Workshop "Quantum Field Theory and String Theory" was held from May 10 to May 21, 1993. The broad spectrum of the work presented at the Workshop was the reflec?? tion of a time of intensive search for new ways of solving some of the most fun?? damental problems in string theory, quantum gravity and non-perturbative field theory. A number of talks indicated the emergence of new promising domains of investigation. It is this very diversity of topics which, in our opinion, represents one of the most attractive features of the present volume which we hope will provide a good orientation in the abundant flow of ideas and publications in modern quantum field theory. Many contributions to the present proceedings are concerned with two di?? mensional quantum field theory. The continuous advances in the domain of two dimensional integrable theories on the lattice as well as in the continuum, including conformal field theories, Liouville field theory and matrix models of two dimensional quantum gravity are very well represented. Other papers address physically realistic (and therefore very complicated) problems like de?? veloped turbulence, the Hofstadter problem, higher dimensional gravity and phenomenological strings. A new elegant class of topological field theories is presented. New ideas in the string representation of multicolor quantum chromo dynamics were widely discussed at the Workshop, more particularly the example of the exactly solvable two dimensional case

TitleSuper-Intense Laser???Atom Physics
Author(s)L'Huillier, A;Piraux, Bernard;Rzazewski, Kazimierz
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1993.
Description518 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe rapid development of powerful pulsed lasers is at the origin of a conside?? rable interest in studying the response of an atom, a molecule (or a solid) to a strong electromagnetic field. It is now possible to produce at the laboratory scale, ultra-short 13 pulses with a duration of 100 femtoseconds (10- second) and a power of the order 12 of 1 terawatt (10 Watt). Under these conditions, very high peak intensities may be obtained and electric fields exceeding typical electron binding fields in atoms are generated. The interaction of an atom or a molecule with such electromagnetic fields has a highly non-linear character which leads to unexpected phenomena. Amongst them, - above-threshold ionization (ATI) i.e. the absorption of additional photons in excess of the minimal number necessary to overcome the ionization potential and its molecular counterpart, above-threshold dissociation (ATD); - generation of very high harmonics of the driving field; - stabilization of one-electron systems in strong fields. These processes were the main topics of two international meetings which were held in 1989 and 1991 in the United States under the common name SILAP (Super-Intense Laser-Atom Physics)

TitleSymposium on High-Energy Electrons : Montreux (Switzerland) 7th to 11th September 1964 Proceedings
Author(s)Zuppinger, Adolf;Poretti, Guelfo G
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1965.
DescriptionXII, 426 p. 84 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteOwing to the tremendously rapid development of the sciences publi?? cations of congresses and meetings are frequently out-of-date by the time they appear in print. We endeavoured to publish the report of the Sym?? posium in Montreux in as short a time as possible. In order to reduce the cost, the manuscripts hat to be confined to few pages at the most and it was absolutely necessary to limit the number of illustrations. For the Symposium in question we invited all those authors of whom we knew they were acquainted with the medicinal application of fast elec?? trons to take part in a discussion covering their particular field of interest. Other lectures were also admitted without exception. Unfortunately on account of various extrinsic reasons the time between the application to take part in the Symposium and the Meeting itself was far too short which fact prevented some well-known scientists from coming to Montreux. In cases where no speaker was to be found for a certain subject Bernese and Milano Institutes (Doc. Dr. med. P. L. CaVA) filled the gap whenever and wherever possible
