TitleGeneral relativity workbook
Author(s)Thomas A. Moore
PublicationMill valley, University Science Books, 2013.
Descriptionxx, 476p.
Abstract NoteA General Relativity Workbook is a textbook intended to support a one-semester upper division undergraduate course on general relativity. Through its unique workbook-based design, it enables students to develop a solid mastery of both the physics and the supporting tensor calculus by pushing (and guiding) them to work through the implications. Each chapter, which is designed to correspond to one class session, involves a short overview of the concepts without obscuring derivations or details, followed by a series of boxes that guide students through the process of working things out for themselves. This active-learning approach enables students to develop a more secure mastery of the material than more traditional approaches. More than 350 homework problems support further learning. This book more strongly emphasizes the physics than many of its competitors, and while it provides students a full grounding in the supporting mathematics (unlike certain other competitors), it introduces the mathematics gradually and in a completely physical context.

TitleModern approach to quantum mechanics
Author(s)John S. Townsend
Edition2nd.
PublicationCalifornia, University Science Books, 2012.
Descriptionxvi, 571p.
Abstract NoteUsing an innovative qpproach that students find both accessible and exciting, Townsend's Quantum Mechanics lays out the foundations of quantum mechanics through the physics of intrinsic spin. In addition to covering all the statndard topics in an upper-division qunatum mechanics course, this new edition has been revised to include many worked examples problems as well as new sections on quantum teleportation, the density operator, coherent states, and cavity quantum electrodynamics.

TitleConsider a spherical cow : A course in environmental problem solving
Author(s)John Harte
PublicationCalifornia, USA, University Science Books, 1988.
Descriptionxiii, 283p.
Contents NoteThe idea for this text evolved from courses in environmental science taught by the author at Yale University and the University of California at Berkeley over the past 15 years. The spherical cow approach to problem solving involves the stripping away of unnecessary detail, so that only essentials remain. This text should serve two functions. First, it should teach the reader how to transform realistic, qualitatively described problems into quantifiable solvable form and to arrive at an approximate solution. Second, it should teach concepts in environmental science from the novel perspective of problem solving.

TitleConsider a cylindrical cow : More adventures in environmental problem solving
Author(s)John Harte
PublicationCalifornia, USA, University Science Books, 2001.
Descriptionxii, 211p
Contents NoteFollowing on the hooves of Consider a Spherical Cow ( Harte, J. 1988) this book will teach you additional modeling skills of use in environmental science. At the beginning of each of the five thematic sections in the book is a general treatment of the relevant mathematical concepts. The core of the book is 25 fully worked-out problems. Each problem statement is posed more like a research question rather than a standard homework exercise. Homework exercises follow each worked-out problem solution and range from relatively straightforward exercises that probe readers' understanding of the concepts and methods to more difficult and open-ended research suggestions.
