DescriptionXIII, 333 p. 348 illus., 1 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book provides undergraduate physics majors and students of related sciences with a sound understanding of basic electronics and how it is used in the physical sciences. While today few science students go on to careers that demand an ability to design and build electronic circuits, many will use and rely on electronics. As scientists, they will require an appropriate level of fundamental knowledge that enables them, for example, to understand what electronic equipment is doing, to correctly interpret the measurements obtained, and to appreciate the numerous links between electronics and how it is practiced and other areas of science. Discussing electronics in the broader context and from the point of view of the scientist, this book is intended for students who are not planning to become electronics specialists but who will use electronics. It has been written in a relatively informal style and includes many detailed examples, as well as some ???outside the box??? material, including some ideas from quantum computing, to inspire thought and creativity. A selection of relevant exercises is included at the end of each chapter. In the updated second edition, some sections are clarified and end-of-chapter problems are added. It includes an additional chapter on quantum logic/computing

TitleThe Border Effect in High-Precision Measurement
Author(s)Zhou, Wei;Li, Zhiqi;Bai, Lina;Fu, Xiaoning;Qu, Bayi;Miao, Miao
PublicationSingapore, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer Nature Singapore, 2023.
DescriptionXV, 378 p. 229 illus., 77 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book introduces various kinds of high-precision measurements, including the measurements of time and space, digital activity, border sensors and other physical quantities. Further, it demonstrates how to eliminate the quantitative errors believed to be the main problem in measurements using the border effect. In metrology technology, detection resolution is crucial to improving measurement precision in devices and instruments, and since the resolution is limited, a fuzzy area is usually found during detection. As such the book presents numerous experimental findings showing that the measurement precision can be improved by two or three orders of magnitude compared to traditional methods by achieving stability of resolution and more accurately detecting the border of the fuzzy area

TitleSlopes and Levels : Spice Models to Simulate Vintage Op-Amp Noise
Author(s)Vogel, Burkhard
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2022.
DescriptionXXX, 333 p. 337 illus., 175 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book features an extensive index and all Mathcad worksheets. Vinyl is back, tubes/valves are back, on the high-end field SMD-free analog amplification surpasses digitalized chains, and top microphone manufacturers still set on good old op-amps or on fully discrete BJT, FET, and/or tube-driven amplifiers. There is only one problem that is not satisfyingly well solved by the manufacturers: It is the noise production of the active components and the useful reflection in simulation tools, in tables or graphs of the datasheets/data books. Nowadays, mostly surrounded by many digital helping tools, it makes sense using them???also by analog aficionados. It saves cost and time simulating first before spending money. Presented in this book the software tool LTSpice which is the free software solution from Linear Technology (today Analog Devices) that could also be used by full analog lovers to simulate the noise production of their amplifier design. All we need is the right creation approach to develop simulation models for the active components. Inter alia this is already done for tubes and BJTs in the 2nd editions of my ???How to Gain Gain??? and ???Balanced Phono-Amps??? books. For op-amps, the missing approaches are presented in the book on hand. It cannot be denied that mathematical software like Mathcad is extremely helpful to find the right equations for graphically presented noise curves which we can find in the literature. Nevertheless, it also works well with other types of math software to fulfill the parameter needs of the here presented modeling approaches for the input referred voltage and current noise of???not only???excellent sounding vintage op-amps, applicable in the audio range from 1 Hz to 100 kHz

TitleLoudspeaker Physics and Forced Vibration
Author(s)Watkins, William H
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2022.
DescriptionXIX, 130 p. 54 illus., 9 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book is a study of the workings of dynamic loudspeakers and dynamically forced vibration. With its wealth of practical observations and real-life examples, this work will prove invaluable to the practicing motor design or loudspeaker design engineer, as well as researchers and students in electroacoustics. The book is based on a lifetime???s accumulated knowledge by acclaimed speaker designer William H. (Bill) Watkins. It differs from the usual tone of most technical books on this subject by initially presenting, and analyzing in full, the function of each key parameter of a reference dynamic loudspeaker. Each parameter???s value is then calculated and also confirmed via lab measurements to vividly illustrate all energy-transduction facets of loudspeaker operation and the forced vibration. This presentation style makes the analysis both more engaging, intuitive, and easier to comprehend compared to most previous works in the field. The principles of this book apply to all direct reciprocating motors, not just those in a dynamic loudspeaker. Unique to the book is an entire chapter dedicated to the discussion of back-EMF voltage, discussed from several technical points of view and analyzed in depth as related to the dynamic transfer of energy between the mechanical and electrical domains. Another unique feature is a detailed discussion of Watkins??? patented dual-motor concept to achieve high dynamic speaker performance in the region of its low-frequency resonance
