Title | Magnetism, Planetary Rotation, and Convection in the Solar System: Retrospect and Prospect : In Honour of Prof. S.K. Runcorn |
Author(s) | O'Reilly, W |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1985. |
Description | 280 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | On the 6th, 7th' and 8th April 1983, a conference entitled "Magnetism, planetary rotation and convection in the Solar System" was held in the School of Physics at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. The purpose of the meeting was to celebrate the 60th birthday of Prof. Stanley Keith Runcorn and his, and his students' and associates', several decades of scientific achievement. The social programme, which consisted of excursions in Northumberland and Durham with visits to ancient castles and churches, to Hexham Abbey and Durham Cathedral, and dinners in Newcastle and Durham, was greatly enjoyed by those attending the meeting and by their guests. The success ofthe scientific programme can be judged by this special edition of Geophysical Surveys which is derived mainly from the papers given at the meeting. The story starts in the late 1940s when the question of the origin of the magnetic field of the Earth and such other heavenly bodies as had at that time been discovered as having a magnetic field, was exercising the minds of several scientists; notably P. M. S. Blackett at Manchester, W. M. Elsasser at the University of Pennsylvania and E. C. Bullard at Cambridge. Two alternative mechanisms were proposed. In one the magnetic field was in some way connected with the distributed angular momentum of a rotating body; in the other, electric currents in conducting parts within the body were proposed as the source of magnetic field |

Author(s) | Clark, John W;Ristig, Manfred L |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1997. |
Description | XI, 196 p. 21 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | The accomplishments and the available expertise of scientists working on spin systems, lattice gauge models, and quantum liquids and solids has culminated in an extraordinary opportunity for rapid and efficient development of realistic strategies and algorithms of ab initio theoretical analysis of conventional and exotic condensed-matter systems. This volume presents the latest results in the interdisciplinary field of lattice many-body systems. These include magnetism and phase transitions and lattice gauge problems in quantum field theory. Also treated are strongly correlated systems that help to unify many-body problems in solid-state physics, crystallography, and materials sciences and that helped their quantitative understanding |

Title | Polarized Electrons |
Author(s) | Kessler, J |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1976. |
Description | IX, 226 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book deals with the physics of spin-polarized free electrons. Many aspects of this rapidly expanding field have been treated in review articles, but to date a self-contained monograph has not been available. In writing this book, I have tried to oppose the current trend in science that sees specialists writing primarily for like-minded specialists, and even physicists in closely related fields understanding each other less than they are inclined to admit. I have attempted to treat a modern field of physics in a style similar to that of a textbook. The presentation should be intelligible to readers at the graduate level, and while it may demand concentration, I hope it will not require decipher?? ing. If the reader feels that it occasionally dwells upon rather elementary topics, he should remember that this pedestrian excursion is meant to be reasonably self-contained. It was, for example, necessary to give a simple introduction to the Dirac theory in order to have a basis for the discussion of Mott scattering-one of the most important techniques in polarized?? electron studies |

Title | Nonlinearity in Condensed Matter : Proceedings of the Sixth Annual Conference, Center for Nonlinear Studies, Los Alamos, New Mexico, 5???9 May, 1986 |
Author(s) | Bishop, Alan R;Campbell, David K;Trullinger, Steven E;Kumar, Pradeep |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1987. |
Description | X, 404 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The Sixth Annual Conference of the Center for Nonlinear Studies at the Los Alamos National Laboratory was held May 5-9, 1986, on the topic "Nonlinearity in Condensed Matter: Lessons from the Past and Prospects for the Future. " As conference organizers, we felt that the study of non?? linear phenomena in condensed matter had matured to the point where it made sense to take stock of the numerous lessons to be learned from a variety of contexts where nonlinearity plays a fundamental role and to evaluate the prospects for the growth of this general discipline. The successful 1978 Oxford Symposium on nonlinear (soliton) struc?? ture and dynamics in condensed matter (Springer Ser. Solid-State Sci. , Vol. 8) was held at a time when the ubiquity of solitons was just begin?? ning to be appreciated by the condensed matter community; in subsequent years the soliton paradigm has provided a rather useful framework for in?? vestigating a large number of phenomena, particularly in low-dimensional systems. Nevertheless, we felt that the importance of nonlinearity in wider arenas than "solitonics" merited a significant expansion in the scope of the conference over that of the 1978 symposium. Indeed, many of the lessons are quite general and their potential for cross-fertilization of otherwise poorly connected disciplines was certainly one of the prime motivations for this conference. Thus, while these proceedings contain many contribu?? tions pertaining to soliton behavior in different contexts, the reader will find much more as well, particularly in the later chapters |

Title | Biomagnetism : An Interdisciplinary Approach |
Author(s) | Williamson, Samuel J;Romani, Gian-Luca;Kaufman, Lloyd;Modena, Ivo |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1983. |
Description | XIX, 706 p. 144 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | Biomagnetism is the study of magnetic fields that originate in biological systems. This is a relatively new discipline that has attracted considerable interest throughout the scientific commu- ty. The study of biomagnetic fields requires the use of techniques and concepts drawn from widely disparate scientific disciplines. To make these techniques and concepts available to a wide spectrum of the scientific community, a NATO Advanced study Institute on B- magnetism was held near Frascati at Grottaferrata, Italy, in S- tember 1982. This volume is based on the lectures delivered by scholars representing many different scientific areas, ranging from solid state physics to psychology. It attempts to preserve the - herent development of concepts drawn from physiology, psychology, biology, physics, medicine, occupational health and geology that was evident during the Institute. The reader will quickly become aware that the progress in biomagnetism over the past decade was due principally to the efforts of interdisciplinary teams of sci- tists. One of the purposes of this volume is to make all of the basic principles and findings of biomagnetism available in one place, so that scientists who have already embarked on the study of biomagnetism or who plan to do so in the near future will have them available for study and reference. Each section of this volume was written by a recognized expert who lectured at the Institute on the topics he describes here |

Title | Strong Correlation and Superconductivity : Proceedings of the IBM Japan International Symposium, Mt. Fuji, Japan, 21???25 May, 1989 |
Author(s) | Fukuyama, Hidetoshi;Maekawa, Sadamichi;Malozemoff, Alexis P |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1989. |
Description | XII, 396 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This volume contains the proceedings of the ffiM Japan International Sympo?? sium on Strong Correlation and Superconductivity, which was held in Keidan?? ren Guest House at the foot of Mt. Fuji, May 21-25, 1989. The purpose of the Symposium was to provide an opportunity for discus?? sions on the problem of strong correlation of electrons in the context of high-Tc superconductivity. Sixty-eight scientists were invited from seven countries and forty-three papers were presented in the Symposium. Soon after the discovery ofhigh-Tc superconducting oxides, Professor P. W. Anderson proposed that the essence of high-Tc superconductivity lies in the strong correlation among the electrons in these materials. This proposal has stimulated a wide range of theoretical investigations on this profound and dif?? ficult problem, which are expected to lead eventually to new concepts describ?? ing strong electron correlation. In the Symposium, Anderson himself started lively discussions by his talk entitled "Myth and Reality in High-Tc Supercon?? ductivity", which was followed by various reports on theoretical studies and experimental results. Concise and thoughtful summaries of experiment and theory were given by Professors H. R. Ott and P. A. Lee, respectively. It is our hope that this volume reflects the present status of the research activity on this outstanding problem from the viewpoint of the basic physics and that it will further stimulate the effort to understand these fascinating systems, the high-Tc oxides |

Title | Cooperative Dynamics in Complex Physical Systems : Proceedings of the Second Yukawa International Symposium, Kyoto, Japan, August 24???27, 1988 |
Author(s) | Takayama, Hajime |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1989. |
Description | XVI, 340 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Many novel cooperative phenomena found in a variety of systems studied by scientists can be treated using the uniting principles of synergetics. Examples are frustrated and random systems, polymers, spin glasses, neural networks, chemical and biological systems, and fluids. In this book attention is focused on two main problems. First, how local, topological constraints (frustrations) can cause macroscopic cooperative behavior: related ideas initially developed for spin glasses are shown to play key roles also for optimization and the modeling of neural networks. Second, the dynamical constraints that arise from the nonlinear dynamics of the systems: the discussion covers turbulence in fluids, pattern formation, and conventional 1/f noise. The volume will be of interest to anyone wishing to understand the current development of work on complex systems, which is presently one of the most challenging subjects in statistical and condensed matter physics |
