Title | Chemically Induced Magnetic Polarization : Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute held at Sogesta, Urbino, Italy, April 17???30, 1977 |
Author(s) | Muus, L.T;Atkins, P.W;McLaughlan, K.A;Pedersen, J.B |

Description | 420 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Magnetic resonance has constantly been able to surprise with its ability to exhibit new phenomena. Just when it appears to be entering a quiet middle age it bursts into activity with some new manifestation of its versatility. This happened a few years ago, when observations on anomalous intensities were looked at more closely, and the pursuit of explanations and further evidence laid the foundations of the subjects treated in this volume. In organizing the NATO Advanced Study Institute we attempted to bring together a number, but by no means all, of those who had contributed significantly to the subject, and to obtain from them a comprehensive and detailed exposition of the subject. We were particularly anxious to avoid a set of lectures that dealt solely with the theory of the subject, because much of the interest in chemically induced magnetic polarization is due to its usefulness in applications to chemical problems: it is a real chemical tech?? nique, not just an amusing diversion for theoreticians. We set about organizing the course with the idea of making it useful to people who wanted to use the technique (for, after all, in the case of nuclear polarization, CIDNP, the technique can be used in any laboratory with minor modification of standard equipment) |

Title | Magnetism: A Supramolecular Function |
Author(s) | Kahn, O |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1996. |
Description | XII, 660 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Molecular magnetism is a new field of research dealing with the synthesis and study of the physical properties of molecular assemblies involving open-shell units. It is essentially interdisciplinary, joining together organic, organometallic and inorganic chemists, as well as theoreticians, physicists and materials scientists. At the core of research into molecular magnetism lie design and synthesis of new molecular assemblies exhibiting bulk properties such as long-range magnetic ordering or bistability with an hysteresis effect, which confers a memory effect on the system. In such terms, magnetism may be considered a supramolecular function. The first eight contributions to this volume present the state of the art in organic supramolecular chemistry, emphasising interlocked systems and molecular trees. The following six articles are devoted to molecular materials constructed from organic radicals and transition metal units. Molecular bistability is then focused on, followed by metal-organic and coordination magnetic materials. A new approach to nano-sized particles closes the work |

Title | Conjugated Conducting Polymers |
Author(s) | Kiess, Helmut |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1992. |
Description | XII, 310 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book reviews the current understanding of electronic, optical and magnetic properties of conjugated polymers in both the semiconducting and metallic states. It introduces in particular novel phenomena and concepts in these quasi?? one-dimensional materials that differ from the well-established concepts valid for crystalline semiconductors. After a brief introductory chapter, the second chapter presents basic theore?? tical concepts and treats in detail the various models for n-conjugated polymers and the computational methods required to derive observable quantities. Specific spatially localized structures, often referred to as solitons, polarons and bipolarons, result naturally from the interaction between n-electrons and lattice displacements. For a semi-quantitative understanding of the various measure?? ments, electron-electron interactions have to be incorporated in the models; this in turn makes the calculations rather complicated. The third chapter is devoted to the electrical properties of these materials. The high metallic conductivity achieved by doping gave rise to the expression conducting polymers, which is often used for such materials even when they are in their semiconducting or insulating state. Although conductivity is one of the most important features, the reader will learn how difficult it is to draw definite conclusions about the nature of the charge carriers and the microscopic transport mechanism solely from electrical measurements. Optical properties are discussed in the fourth chapter |

Title | Magnetic Domains : The Analysis of Magnetic Microstructures |
Author(s) | Hubert, Alex;Sch??fer, Rudolf |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1998. |
Description | XXIII, 696 p. 1072 illus., 5 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | The rich world of magnetic microstructure or magnetic domains - extending from the "nano-world" to visible dimensions - is systematically covered in this book. The subject, which might be called "mesomagnetism", forms the link between atomic foundations and technical applications of magnetic materials, ranging from computer storage systems to the magnetic cores of electrical machinery. The structures and processes in the hidden inner world of magnets are also favourite examples in the theoretical analysis of complex systems. Independent of their scientific and technical relevance, magnetic microstructures are also esthetically appealing, and the authors could not resist this aspect of their work |

Title | Geomagnetic Diagnosis of the Magnetosphere |
Author(s) | Nishida, A |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1978. |
Description | VIII, 256 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The geomagnetic field observed on the surface of the earth has been an important source of information on the dynamic behavior of the magnetosphere. Because the?? magnetosphere and its environment are filled with plasma in which electric current can easily flow, dynamic processes that occur in the magnetosphere tend to produce perturba?? tions in the geomagnetic field. Geomagnetic data have therefore pro?? vided valuable means for sensing the processes taking place at remote locations, and such basic concepts as the magnetosphere, solar wind, and trapped radiation were derived in early, presatellite days from geomagnetic analyses. Because of this advantage, geomagnetic observations have been widely utilized for monitoring the overall condition of the magneto?? sphere. Although the advent of space vehides has made it possible to observe magnetospheric processes in situ, supplementary information on the overall magnetospheric condition is frequently found to be indispensable for interpreting these observations in the proper perspec?? tive. Hence for magnetospheric physicists involved in various branches of the field it has become a common practice to employ geomagnetic data as a basic diagnostic tool |

Title | Wave Turbulence Under Parametric Excitation : Applications to Magnets |
Author(s) | L'vov, Victor S |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1994. |
Description | XX, 330 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | WAVE TURBULENCE is a state of a system of many simultaneously excited and interacting waves characterized by an energy distribution which is not in any sense close to thermodynamic equilibrium. Such situations in a choppy sea, in a hot plasma, in dielectrics under arise, for example, a powerful laser beam, in magnets placed in a strong microwave field, etc. Among the great variety of physical situations in which wave turbulence arises, it is possible to select two large limiting groups which allow a detailed analysis. The first is fully developed wave turbulence arising when energy pumping and dissipation have essentially different space scales. In this case there is a wide power spectrum of turbulence. This type of turbulence is described in detail e. g. in Zakharov et al. 1 In the second limiting case the scales in which energy pumping and dissipation occur are the same. As a rule, in this case a narrow, almost singular spectrum of turbulence appears which is concentrated near surfaces, curves or even points in k-space. One of the most important, widely investigated and instructive examples of this kind of turbulence is parametric wave turbulence appearing as a result of the evolution of a parametric instability of waves in media under strong external periodic modulation (laser beam, microwave electromagnetic field, etc. ). The present book deals with parametric wave turbulence |

Title | The Theory of Magnetism II : Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics |
Author(s) | Mattis, Daniel C |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1985. |
Description | XII, 184 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | What is thermodynamics? What does statistical physics teach us? In the pages of this slim book, we confront the answers. The reader will discover that where thermodynami cs provi des a 1 arge scal e, macroscopi c theory of the ef?? fects of temperature on physical systems, statistical mechanics provides the microscopic analysis of these effects which, invariably, are the results of thermal disorder. A number of systems in nature undergo dramatic changes in aspect and in their properties when subjected to changes in ambient temperature or pres?? sure, or when electric or magnetic fields are applied. The ancients already knew that a liquid, a solid, or a gas can represent different states of the same matter. But what is meant by "state"? It is here that the systematic study of magnetic materials has provided one of the best ways of examining this question, which is one of the principal concerns of statistical physics (alias "statistical mechanics") and of modern thermodynamics |

Title | Magnetic Bubble Technology |
Author(s) | Eschenfelder, A. H |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1981. |
Description | XVI, 348 p. 56 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | The popularity of the First Edition of this book has been very gratifying. It confirms that there is a genuine need for a text covering the magnetic bubble technology. We are pleased that the readers have found that this book satisfies that need. It has been used as a text for courses in both universities and industry, and as a reference manual by workers active in the field. To meet the need for more copies of the book it seemed preferable to publish a second edition rather than merely a second printing. There has been some significant progress, even in the short time since the initial printing, and we wanted to include that. At the same time we would like to provide the new copies at the lowest possible cost so that they are more easily obtained by students. For this reason the new edition is in soft cover and the recent progress has been described in a final chapter rather than incorporated into the original chapters. This eliminates the expense of resetting and repaging the original text. At the same time up-to-date references have been added and typographical errors have been corrected in the original chapters. It is our hope that this edition will be useful to those with an interest in the fascinating field of magnetic bubbles |
