Title | The Fokker-Planck Equation : Methods of Solution and Applications |
Author(s) | Risken, Hannes |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1984. |
Description | online resource |
Abstract Note | One of the central problems synergetics is concerned with consists in the study of macroscopic qualitative changes of systems belonging to various disciplines such as physics, chemistry, or electrical engineering. When such transitions from one state to another take place, fluctuations, i.e., random processes, may play an im?? portant role. Over the past decades it has turned out that the Fokker-Planck equation pro?? vides a powerful tool with which the effects of fluctuations close to transition points can be adequately treated and that the approaches based on the Fokker?? Planck equation are superior to other approaches, e.g., based on Langevin equa?? tions. Quite generally, the Fokker-Planck equation plays an important role in problems which involve noise, e.g., in electrical circuits. For these reasons I am sure that this book will find a broad audience. It pro?? vides the reader with a sound basis for the study of the Fokker-Planck equation and gives an excellent survey of the methods of its solution. The author of this book, Hannes Risken, has made substantial contributions to the development and application of such methods, e.g., to laser physics, diffusion in periodic potentials, and other problems. Therefore this book is written by an experienced practitioner, who has had in mind explicit applications to important problems in the natural sciences and electrical engineering |

Title | Theory of Structured Multiphase Mixtures |
Author(s) | Dobran, Flavio |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1991. |
Description | IX, 225 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | In this volume the author gives a detailed presentation of his theory of multiphase mixtures with structure. The book also addresses students, and in addition encourages further research. Based on the concept of averaging the field equations, conservation and balance equations are developed. A material deformation postulate leads to structured mixtures. The resulting model is compared with those in use elsewhere. The final chapters are devoted to constitutive theory and constitutive equations. In particular, two-phase mixtures are treated in some detail |

Title | Modern Introductory Physics |
Author(s) | Holbrow, Charles H;Lloyd, James N;Amato, Joseph C;Galvez, Enrique;Parks, M. Elizabeth |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 1999. |
Description | XVIII, 519 p. 597 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book grew out of an ongoing effort to modernize Colgate University's three-term, introductory, calculus-Ievel physics course. The book is for the first term of this course and is intended to help first-year college students make a good transition from high-school physics to university physics. The book concentrates on the physics that explains why we believe in the existence of atoms and their properties. This story line, which motivates much of our professional research, has helped us limit the material presented to a more humane and more realistic amount than is presented in many beginning university physics courses. The theme of atoms also supports the presentation of more non-Newtonian topics and ideas than is customary in the first term of calculus-Ievel physics. We think it is important and desirable to introduce students sooner than usual to some of the major ideas that shape contemporary physicists' views of the nature and behavior of matter. On the verge of the twenty-first century such a goal seems particularly appropriate |

Title | Linear Prediction Theory : A Mathematical Basis for Adaptive Systems |
Author(s) | Strobach, Peter |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1990. |
Description | XVI, 422 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Lnear prediction theory and the related algorithms have matured to the point where they now form an integral part of many real-world adaptive systems. When it is necessary to extract information from a random process, we are frequently faced with the problem of analyzing and solving special systems of linear equations. In the general case these systems are overdetermined and may be characterized by additional properties, such as update and shift-invariance properties. Usually, one employs exact or approximate least-squares methods to solve the resulting class of linear equations. Mainly during the last decade, researchers in various fields have contributed techniques and nomenclature for this type of least-squares problem. This body of methods now constitutes what we call the theory of linear prediction. The immense interest that it has aroused clearly emerges from recent advances in processor technology, which provide the means to implement linear prediction algorithms, and to operate them in real time. The practical effect is the occurrence of a new class of high-performance adaptive systems for control, communications and system identification applications. This monograph presumes a background in discrete-time digital signal processing, including Z-transforms, and a basic knowledge of discrete-time random processes. One of the difficulties I have en?? countered while writing this book is that many engineers and computer scientists lack knowledge of fundamental mathematics and geometry |

Title | Renormalization : From Lorentz to Landau (and Beyond) |
Author(s) | Brown, Laurie M |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 1993. |
Description | VII, 192 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The purpose of this section is to give you a sketch of how quantum field theory works, where Feynman graphs come from and why they are so useful, where the infinities come from, and how we have learned to deal with them without compromising the physical principles involved. I am purposely treating the problem at the level of the 1940s and 1950s, so as to keep the basic ideas clear and avoid the more difficult problems and more sophisticated methods of recent years. I shall relate my discussion simply to quantum electrodynamics (QED) since that is the most familiar case and the case that was in the forefront from the beginning (though in fact I shall ignore many of the special complications that have to be dealt with when you quantize a gauge field). The methods I shall be describing are applicable to all sorts of quantized fields: the detailed factors are different but the structure of the logical development isjust the same. Not surprisingly, though, the renormalization procedure breaks down if the theory in question is nonrenormalizable. Whether nonrenormalizable theories are theories at all is a matter for debate; in any case, they hold no practical interest for physicists since they are essentially unusable. Quantum electrodynamics was devised in 1927 by Dirac, less than a year after the Schrodinger equation appeared and before the Dirac equa?? tion for the relativistic electron had been invented |

Title | Electron Energy Loss Spectrometers : The Technology of High Performance |
Author(s) | Ibach, Harald |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1991. |
Description | VIII, 181 p. 2 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | Electron energy loss spectroscopy has become an indispensable tool in surface analysis. Although the basic physics of this technique is well understood, instrument design has previously largely been left to intuition. This book is the first to provide a comprehensive treatment of the electron optics involved in the production of intense monochromatic beams and the detection of scattered electrons. It includes a full three-dimensional analysis of the electron optical properties of electron emission systems, monochromators and lens systems, placing particular emphasis on the procedures for matching the various components. The description is kept mathematically simple and focuses on practical aspects, with many hints for writing computer codes to calculate and optimize electrostatic lens elements |
