Abstract NoteThe four lectures presented in this volume discuss recent ideas such as bifurcation, catastrophe and singular theory in elastic post-buckling but avoid advanced mathematics. The influence of imperfections and boundary conditions on the maximal load of stiffened shells of revolution is studied by numerical methods. Experimental methods to test compressed structures are presented and will serve as a useful guide for engineers and physicists. Also of practical importance is the thorough discussion of the state of the art in plastic buckling of plates and shells under the influence of the constitutive laws. The lectures are intended for postgraduate students, but at the same time they should serve as a review for researchers and engineers in solid mechanics

Abstract NoteThis monograph is based on a graduate course, Mechanical Engipeering 266, which was developed over a number of years at the University of California-Berkeley. Shorter versions of the course were given at the University of Paris VI in 1969, and at the University of Paris XI in 1972. The course was originally presented as the last of a three quarter sequence on Compressible Flow Theory, with emphasis on the treatment of non-linear problems by numerical techniques. This is reflected in the material of the first half of the book, covering several techniques for handling non-linear wave interaction and other problems in Gas Dynamics. The techniques have their origins in the Method of Characteristics (in both two and three dimensions). Besides reviewing the method itself the more recent techniques derived from it, firstly by Godunov and his group, and secondly by Rusanov and his co-workers, are described. Both these approaches are applicable to steady flows calculated as asymptotic states of unsteady flows and treat elliptic prob?? lems as limiting forms of unsteady hyperbolic problems. They are there?? fore applicable to low speed as well a~ to high speed flow problems. The second half of the book covers the treatment of a variety of steady flow problems, including effects of both viscosity and compressibi?? lity, by the Method of Integral Relations, Telenin's Method, and the Method of Lines

Abstract NoteThe word "elements" in the title of this book does not convey the implica?? tion that its contents are "elementary" in the sense of "easy": it mainly means that no prerequisites are required, with the exception of some basic background in classical physics and calculus. It also signifies "devoted to the foundations". In fact, the arguments chosen are all very classical, and the formal or technical developments of this century are absent, as well as a detailed treatment of such problems as the theory of the planetary motions and other very concrete mechanical problems. This second meaning, however, is the result of the necessity of finishing this work in a reasonable amount of time rather than an a priori choice. Therefore a detailed review of the "few" results of ergodic theory, of the "many" results of statistical mechanics, of the classical theory of fields (elasticity and waves), and of quantum mechanics are also totally absent; they could constitute the subject of two additional volumes on mechanics. This book grew out of several courses on meccanica razionaie, i.e., essentially, theoretical mechanics, which I gave at the University of Rome during the years 1975-1978

Abstract Note"Dissipative structures" is a concept which has recently been used in physics to discuss the formation of structures organized in space and/or time at the expense of the energy flowing into the system from the outside. The space-time structural organization of biological systems starting from the subcellular level up to the level of ecological systems, coherent structures in laser and of elastic stability in mechanics, instability in hydro?? plasma physics, problems dynamics leading to the development of turbulence, behavior of electrical networks and chemical reactors form just a short list of problems treated in this framework. Mathematical models constructed to describe these systems are usually nonlinear, often formed by complicated systems of algebraic, ordinary differ?? ential, or partial differential equations and include a number of character?? istic parameters. In problems of theoretical interest as well as engineering practice, we are concerned with the dependence of solutions on parameters and particularly with the values of parameters where qualitatively new types of solutions, e.g., oscillatory solutions, new stationary states, and chaotic attractors, appear (bifurcate). Numerical techniques to determine both bifurcation points and the depen?? dence of steady-state and oscillatory solutions on parameters are developed and discussed in detail in this text. The text is intended to serve as a working manual not only for students and research workers who are interested in dissipative structures, but also for practicing engineers who deal with the problems of constructing models and solving complicated nonlinear systems

Abstract NoteIn the seven years since this volume first appeared. there has been an enormous expansion of the range of problems to which Monte Carlo computer simulation methods have been applied. Abstract Notereprinted in the British trade journal Physics World in 1990, three separate and 5 lengthy replies from establishment physicists were printed in subsequent issues. For outsiders, especially scientists who rely on physicist's theories in their own fields, this situation is disquieting. Moreover, many recall their introduction to quantum mechanics as a startling, if not shocking, experience. A molecular biologist related how he had started in theoretical physics but, after hearing the ideology of quantum mechanics, marched straight to the Reg?? istrar's office and switched fields. A colleague recalled how her undergraduate chemistry professor religiously entertained queries from the class - until one day he began with the words: "No questions will be permitted on today's lecture." The topic, of course, was quantum mechanics. My father, an organic chemist at a Midwestern university, also had to give that dreaded annual lecture. Around age 16, I picked up a little book he used to prepare and was perplexed by the author's tone, which seemed apologetic to the point of pleading. It was my first brush with the quantum theory. 6 Eventually, I went to graduate school in physics. By then I had acquired an historical bent, which developed out of an episode in my freshman year in college. To relieve the tedium of the introductory physics course, I set out to understand Einstein's theory of relativity (the so-called Special Theory of 1905, not the later and more difficult General Theory of 1915). Abstract NoteIn general, combustion is a spatially three-dimensional, highly complex physi?? co-chemical process oftransient nature. Models are therefore needed that sim?? to such a degree that it becomes amenable plify a given combustion problem to theoretical or numerical analysis but that are not so restrictive as to distort the underlying physics or chemistry. In particular, in view of worldwide efforts to conserve energy and to control pollutant formation, models of combustion chemistry are needed that are sufficiently accurate to allow confident predic?? tions of flame structures. Reduced kinetic mechanisms, which are the topic of the present book, represent such combustion-chemistry models. Historically combustion chemistry was first described as a global one-step reaction in which fuel and oxidizer react to form a single product. Even when detailed mechanisms ofelementary reactions became available, empirical one?? step kinetic approximations were needed in order to make problems amenable to theoretical analysis. This situation began to change inthe early 1970s when computing facilities became more powerful and more widely available, thereby facilitating numerical analysis of relatively simple combustion problems, typi?? cally steady one-dimensional flames, with moderately detailed mechanisms of elementary reactions. However, even on the fastest and most powerful com?? puters available today, numerical simulations of, say, laminar, steady, three?? dimensional reacting flows with reasonably detailed and hence realistic ki?? netic mechanisms of elementary reactions are not possible

Abstract NoteIn structure mechanics analysis, finite element methods are now well estab?? lished and well documented techniques; their advantage lies in a higher flexibility, in particular for: (i) The representation of arbitrary complicated boundaries; (ii) Systematic rules for the developments of stable numerical schemes ap?? proximating mathematically wellposed problems, with various types of boundary conditions. On the other hand, compared to finite difference methods, this flexibility is paid by: an increased programming complexity; additional storage require?? ment. The application of finite element methods to fluid mechanics has been lagging behind and is relatively recent for several types of reasons: (i) Historical reasons: the early methods were invented by engineers for the analysis of torsion, flexion deformation of bearns, plates, shells, etc ... (see the historics in Strang and Fix (1972) or Zienckiewicz (1977??. (ii) Technical reasons: fluid flow problems present specific difficulties: strong gradients,l of the velocity or temperature for instance, may occur which a finite mesh is unable to properly represent; a remedy lies in the various upwind finite element schemes which recently turned up, and which are reviewed in chapter 2 (yet their effect is just as controversial as in finite differences). Next, waves can propagate (e.g. in ocean dynamics with shallowwaters equations) which will be falsely distorted by a finite non regular mesh, as Kreiss (1979) pointed out. We are concerned in this course with the approximation of incompressible, viscous, Newtonian fluids, i.e. governed by N avier Stokes equations
