TitleOil and Gas Dictionary : An Encyclopedic Dictionary of Economic and Financial Concepts andTerms
Author(s)Stevens, Paul
PublicationLondon, 1. Imprint: Palgrave Macmillan 2. Palgrave Macmillan UK, 1988.
DescriptionX, 270 p : online resource
Abstract NoteArranged in alphabetical order, this book provides an understanding for those not fully in command of the language in every area of oil and gas. It covers and explains three areas. Scientific and engineering terms are explained specifically for those with no technical background. In the same way general economic and financial terms regularly used in the industry are explained specifically for those with no economic or financial background. Finally, the book explains the industry-specific terms for those who need to understand aspects of the industry but have been hindered from doing so by their inability to discover the meaning of the jargon used

TitleModern Mathematical Models of Time and their Applications to Physics and Cosmology : Proceedings of the International Conference held in Tucson, Arizona, 11???13 April, 1996
Author(s)Tifft, W.G;Cocke, W.J
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1997.
DescriptionV, 396 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe nature of time has long puzzled physicists and philosophers. Time potentially has very fundamental yet unknown properties. In 1993 a new model of multi-dimensional time was found to relate closely to properties of the cosmological redshift. An international conference was subsequently convened in April 1996 to examine past, current and new concepts of time as they relate to physics and cosmology. These proceedings incorporate 34 reviews and contributed papers from the conference. The major reviews include observational properties of the redshift, alternative cosmologies, critical problems in cosmology, alternative viewpoints and problems in gravitation theory and particle physics, and new approaches to mathematical models of time. Professionals and students with an interest in cosmology and the structure of the universe will find that this book raises critical problems and explores challenging alternatives to classical viewpoints

Abstract NoteAstronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts, which has appeared in semi-annual volumes since 1969, is de?? voted to the recording, summarizing and indexing of astronomical publications throughout the world. It is prepared under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union (according to a resolution adopted at the 14th General Assembly in 1970). Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts aims to present a comprehensive documentation of literature in all fields of astronomy and astrophysics. Every effort will be made to ensure that the averagetime interval between the date of receipt of the original literature and publication ofthe abstracts will not exceed eight months. This time interval is near to that achieved by monthly abstracting journals, com?? pared to which our system of accumulating abstracts for about six months offers the advantage of greater convenience for the user. Volume 17 contains literature published in 1976 and received before August 15, 1976; some older literature which was received late and which is not recorded in earlier volumes is also included. We acknowledge with thanks contributions to this volume by Dr. J. Bouska, who surveyed journals and publications in the Czech languageand supplied us with abstracts in English, and by the Common?? wealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (C.S.I.R.O.), Sydney, for providing titles and abstracts of papers on radio astronomy. We want to acknowledge valuable contributions to this vol?? ume by Zentralstelle fur Atomkernenergie-Dokumentation, Leopoldshafen, which supported our ab?? stracting service by sending us retrospective literature searches

TitleColliding Galaxies : The Universe in Turmoil
Author(s)Parker, Barry R
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1990.
DescriptionX, 298 p : online resource
Abstract NoteI remember sitting spellbound, watching the movie When Worlds Collide. Two planets hurled through space toward Earth while scientists and engineers frantically raced to complete a rocket?? ship that would take them to safety. In the final moments the spaceship lifted off as the occupants watched the Earth bulge, crack, then literally explode as one of the planets struck it. As I left the theater I wondered if it was really possible for another world to collide with Earth. Later I learned that while many catastrophic collisions no doubt occurred early in the his?? tory of the solar system, today they are exceedingly rare. I was relieved, but in another sense I was disappointed (not that I hoped a collision of this type would actually occur). A collision of two objects in space, say, two stars, I was sure would be a spectacular event. It is quite unlikely, however, that we will ever witness the collision of two stars. The event is just too rare. But collisions of systems of stars-galaxies-oddly enough, are relatively com?? mon. In fact, we see evidence of several in the sky right now

TitleStarbursts Triggers, Nature, and Evolution : Les Houches School, September 17???27, 1996
Author(s)Guiderdoni, Bruno
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1998.
DescriptionXI, 255 p. 27 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteStarbursts are regions of unusually rapid star formation, often located in the central parts of galaxies. They differ from more normal regions of star formation in terms of the throughput of mass and the rapidity with which the gas is consumed. In the last twenty years, extensive observational data at most wavelengths have become available on starbursts, but many important issues remain to be addressed, observationally as well as theoretically. How are strong episodes of star formation triggered? What is the quantity of gas converted into stars during bursts? What is the initial mass function of stars in these events? How does the feedback from stars influence the interstellar medium and self-regulate star formation? What is the subsequent chemical and photometric evolution? How do starbursts rule the formation and evolution of galaxies? In recent years, many observational data at different wavelengths (optical, radio, infrared, X-ray) have become available. However, these observations are still fragmentary in the sense that different classes of objects have been observed in different ways, and the coverage is not consistently deep or complete. As a consequence, an overall observational picture of starburst galaxies is missing, and theoretical understanding and modelling have remained highly tentative. The purpose of the school Starbursts: Triggers, Nature, and Evolution was to gather theorists and observers with complementary approaches to the starburst phenomenon, in order to summarize the state-of-the-art of the observations and models, emphasizing the consistency of the various viewpoints
