Abstract NoteMany modern high-resolution schemes for Computational Fluid Dynamics trace their origins to the Flux-Corrected Transport (FCT) paradigm. FCT maintains monotonicity using a nonoscillatory low-order scheme to determine the bounds for a constrained high-order approximation. This book begins with historical notes by J.P. Boris and D.L. Book who invented FCT in the early 1970s. The chapters that follow describe the design of fully multidimensional FCT algorithms for structured and unstructured grids, limiting for systems of conservation laws, and the use of FCT as an implicit subgrid scale model. The second edition presents 200 pages of additional material. The main highlights of the three new chapters include: FCT-constrained interpolation for Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian methods, an optimization-based approach to flux correction, and FCT simulations of high-speed flows on overset grids. Addressing students and researchers, as well as CFD practitioners, the book is focused on computational aspects and contains many numerical examples

Abstract NoteThis book is an introduction to structured and unstructured grid methods in scientific computing, addressing graduate students, scientists as well as practitioners. Basic local and integral grid quality measures are formulated and new approaches to mesh generation are reviewed. In addition to the content of the successful first edition, a more detailed and practice oriented description of monitor metrics in Beltrami and diffusion equations is given for generating adaptive numerical grids. Also, new techniques developed by the author are presented, in particular a technique based on the inverted form of Beltrami???s partial differential equations with respect to control metrics. This technique allows the generation of adaptive grids for a wide variety of computational physics problems, including grid clustering to given function values and gradients, grid alignment with given vector fields, and combinations thereof. It was attended by 75 students (among them many well known specialists in optimiza?? tion) from the following countries: Belgium, Brasil, Canada, China, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Rumania, Spain, Turkey, UK, USA, Venezuela. The lectures were given by 17 well known specialists in the field, from Brasil, China, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Russia, Sweden, UK, USA. Solving continuous optimization problems is a fundamental task in computational mathematics for applications in areas of engineering, economics, chemistry, biology and so on. Most real problems are nonlinear and can be of quite large size. Devel?? oping efficient algorithms for continuous optimization has been an important field of research in the last 30 years, with much additional impetus provided in the last decade by the availability of very fast and parallel computers. Techniques, like the simplex method, that were already considered fully developed thirty years ago have been thoroughly revised and enormously improved. The aim of this ASI was to present the state of the art in this field. While not all important aspects could be covered in the fifty hours of lectures (for instance multiob?? jective optimization had to be skipped), we believe that most important topics were presented, many of them by scientists who greatly contributed to their development

Abstract NoteThis book contains the main results of the German project POPINDA. It surveys the state of the art of industrial aerodynamic design simulations on parallel systems. POPINDA is an acronym for Portable Parallelization of Industrial Aerodynamic Applications. This project started in late 1993. The research and development work invested in POPINDA corresponds to about 12 scientists working full-time for the three and a half years of the project. POPINDA was funded by the German Federal Ministry for Education, Science, Research and Technology (BMBF). The central goals of POPINDA were to unify and parallelize the block-structured aerodynamic flow codes of the German aircraft industry and to develop new algorithmic approaches to improve the efficiency and robustness of these programs. The philosophy behind these goals is that challenging and important numerical appli?? cations such as the prediction of the 3D viscous flow around full aircraft in aerodynamic design can only be carried out successfully if the benefits of modern fast numerical solvers and parallel high performance computers are combined. This combination is a "conditio sine qua non" if more complex applications such as aerodynamic design optimization or fluid structure interaction problems have to be solved. When being solved in a standard industrial aerodynamic design process, such more complex applications even require a substantial further reduction of computing times. Parallel and vector computers on the one side and innovative numerical algorithms such as multigrid on the other have enabled impressive improvements in scientific computing in the last 15 years

Abstract NoteThis volume contains refereed papers and extended abstracts of papers presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop entitled 'Numerical Integration: Recent Develop?? ments, Software and Applications', held at the University of Bergen, Bergen, Norway, June 17-21,1991. The Workshop was attended by thirty-eight scientists. A total of eight NATO countries were represented. Eleven invited lectures and twenty-three contributed lectures were presented, of which twenty-five appear in full in this volume, together with three extended abstracts and one note. The main focus of the workshop was to survey recent progress in the theory of methods for the calculation of integrals and show how the theoretical results have been used in software development and in practical applications. The papers in this volume fall into four broad categories: numerical integration rules, numerical integration error analysis, numerical integration applications and numerical integration algorithms and software. It is five years since the last workshop of this nature was held, at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada, in 1986. Recent theoretical developments have mostly occurred in the area of integration rule construction. For polynomial integrating rules, invariant theory and ideal theory have been used to provide lower bounds on the numbers of points for different types of multidimensional rules, and to help in structuring the nonlinear systems which must be solved to determine the points and weights for the rules. Many new optimal or near optimal rules have been found for a variety of integration regions using these techniques

Abstract NoteImage simulation has become a common tool in HREM (High Resolution Electron Microscopy) in recent years. However, the literature on the subject is scattered among many different journals and conference proceedings that have occurred in the last two or three decades. It is difficult for beginners to get started in this field. The principle method of image simulation has come to be known as simply the multislice method. This book attempts to bring the diverse information on image simulation together into one place and to provide a background on how to use the multislice method to simulate high resolution images in both conventional and scanning transmission electron microscopy. The main goals of image simulation include understanding the microscope and interpreting high resolution information in the recorded micrographs. This book contains sections on the theory of image formation and simulation as well as a more practical introduction on how to use the multislice method on real specimens. Also included with this book is a CD-ROM with working programs to perform image simulation. The source code as well as the executable code for IBM-PC and Apple Macintosh computers is included. Although the programs may not have a very elegant user interface by today's standards (simple command line dialog), the source code should be very portable to a variety of different computers. It has been compiled and run on Mac's, PC's and several different types of UNIX computers
