Title | From Statistical Physics to Statistical Inference and Back |
Author(s) | Grassberger, P;Nadal, J.P |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1994. |
Description | VIII, 355 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Physicists, when modelling physical systems with a large number of degrees of freedom, and statisticians, when performing data analysis, have developed their own concepts and methods for making the `best' inference. But are these methods equivalent, or not? What is the state of the art in making inferences? The physicists want answers. More: neural computation demands a clearer understanding of how neural systems make inferences; the theory of chaotic nonlinear systems as applied to time series analysis could profit from the experience already booked by the statisticians; and finally, there is a long-standing conjecture that some of the puzzles of quantum mechanics are due to our incomplete understanding of how we make inferences. Matter enough to stimulate the writing of such a book as the present one. But other considerations also arise, such as the maximum entropy method and Bayesian inference, information theory and the minimum description length. Finally, it is pointed out that an understanding of human inference may require input from psychologists. This lively debate, which is of acute current interest, is well summarized in the present work |

Title | Ambiguity in Mind and Nature : Multistable Cognitive Phenomena |
Author(s) | Kruse, Peter;Stadler, Michael |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1995. |
Description | XI, 493 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Ambiguity in Mind and Nature is the result of cognitive multistability, the phenomenon in which an unchanging stimulus, usually visual, gives rise in the subject to an oscillating perceptual interpretation. The vase/face picture is one of the most famous examples. In this book scientists from many disciplines including physics, biology, psychology, maths and computer science, present recent progress in this fascinating area of cognitive science. Using the phenomenon of multistability as a paradigm they seek to understand how meaning originates in the brain as a consequence of cognitive processes. New advances are achieved by applying concepts such as self-organization, chaos theory and complex systems to the latest results of psychological and neurophysical experiments |

Title | Applications of Neural Networks |
Author(s) | Murray, Alan |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1995. |
Description | XII, 322 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Applications of Neural Networks gives a detailed description of 13 practical applications of neural networks, selected because the tasks performed by the neural networks are real and significant. The contributions are from leading researchers in neural networks and, as a whole, provide a balanced coverage across a range of application areas and algorithms. The book is divided into three sections. Section A is an introduction to neural networks for nonspecialists. Section B looks at examples of applications using `Supervised Training'. Section C presents a number of examples of `Unsupervised Training'. For neural network enthusiasts and interested, open-minded sceptics. The book leads the latter through the fundamentals into a convincing and varied series of neural success stories -- described carefully and honestly without over-claiming. Applications of Neural Networks is essential reading for all researchers and designers who are tasked with using neural networks in real life applications |

Title | Content-Addressable Memories |
Author(s) | Kohonen, Teuvo |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1987. |
Description | XIII, 388 p. 2 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | Due to continual progress in the large-scale integration of semiconductor circuits, parallel computing principles can already be met in low-cost sys?? tems: numerous examples exist in image processing, for which special hard?? ware is implementable with quite modest resources even by nonprofessional designers. Principles of content addressing, if thoroughly understood, can thereby be applied effectively using standard components. On the other hand, mass storage based on associative principles still exists only in the long?? term plans of computer technologists. This situation is somewhat confused by the fact that certain expectations are held for the development of new storage media such as optical memories and "spin glasses" (metal alloys with low-density magnetic impurities). Their technologies, however, may not ripen until after "fifth generation" computers have been built. It seems that software methods for content addressing, especially those based on hash coding principles, are still holding their position firmly, and a few innovations have been developed recently. As they need no special hardware, one might expect that they will spread to a wide circle of users. This monograph is based on an extensive literature survey, most of which was published in the First Edition. I have added Chap. ?, which contains a review of more recent work. This updated book now has references to over 1200 original publications. In the editing of the new material, I received valuable help from Anneli HeimbUrger, M. Sc. , and Mrs. Leila Koivisto |

Title | Neural Networks : An Introduction |
Author(s) | M??ller, Berndt;Reinhardt, Joachim;Strickland, Michael T |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1995. |
Description | XV, 331 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Neural Networks The concepts of neural-network models and techniques of parallel distributed processing are comprehensively presented in a three-step approach: - After a brief overview of the neural structure of the brain and the history of neural-network modeling, the reader is introduced to associative memory, preceptrons, feature-sensitive networks, learning strategies, and practical applications. - The second part covers more advanced subjects such as the statistical physics of spin glasses, the mean-field theory of the Hopfield model, and the "space of interactions" approach to the storage capacity of neural networks. - In the self-contained final part, seven programs that provide practical demonstrations of neural-network models and their learning strategies are discussed. The software is included on a 3 1/2-inch MS-DOS diskette. The source code can be modified using Borland's TURBO-C 2.0 compiler, the Microsoft C compiler (5.0), or compatible compilers |

Title | Synergetics of Cognition : Proceedings of the International Symposium at Schlo?? Elmau, Bavaria, June 4???8, 1989 |
Author(s) | Haken, Hermann;Stadler, Michael |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1990. |
Description | IX, 440 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book presents the invited lectures given at the International Symposium on Synergetics of Cognition held at SchloB Elmau, Bavaria (Fed. Rep. of Germany), June 4-8, 1989. The understanding of the processes underlying cognition is certainly one of the most challenging and difficult problems confronting the human mind. It is an enterprise that requires the cooperation of scientists from fields ranging from the neurosciences and psychology through biology to the computer sciences, physics and mathematics. The papers included in this volume reflect this joint effort. As will be evident, there is a remarkable convergence of ideas stemming from various fields, for instance, the earlier ideas on Gestalt theory celebrate a come?? back and remarkable analogies are being established with modem concepts of self-organization as dealt with in the interdisciplinary field of synergetics. The individual topics range from the "microscopic level", where new exciting results on specific oscillations of neural activity are reported, to computer simulations of perception, and finally psychological experiments at the "macroscopic level". We hope that this book will convey to its readers the same enthusiasm that was felt by the participants of the symposium. We wish to thank Mrs. U. Funke for the excellent organisation of the sym?? posium, and the Volkswagen-Stiftung, Hannover, for its financial support. We are furthermore grateful to Christoph Stadler and Zora Franko for their help in com?? piling the name and subject indexes. Finally we wish to thank Springer-Verlag, in particular Dr. Angela Lahee, for the excellent cooperation |

Title | Maximum Entropy and Bayesian Methods : Boise, Idaho, USA, 1997 Proceedings of the 17th International Workshop on Maximum Entropy and Bayesian Methods of Statistical Analysis |
Author(s) | Erickson, G;Rychert, Joshua T;Smith, C.R |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1998. |
Description | IX, 302 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This volume has its origin in the Seventeenth International Workshop on Maximum Entropy and Bayesian Methods, MAXENT 97. The workshop was held at Boise State University in Boise, Idaho, on August 4 -8, 1997. As in the past, the purpose of the workshop was to bring together researchers in different fields to present papers on applications of Bayesian methods (these include maximum entropy) in science, engineering, medicine, economics, and many other disciplines. Thanks to significant theoretical advances and the personal computer, much progress has been made since our first Workshop in 1981. As indicated by several papers in these proceedings, the subject has matured to a stage in which computational algorithms are the objects of interest, the thrust being on feasibility, efficiency and innovation. Though applications are proliferating at a staggering rate, some in areas that hardly existed a decade ago, it is pleasing that due attention is still being paid to foundations of the subject. The following list of descriptors, applicable to papers in this volume, gives a sense of its contents: deconvolution, inverse problems, instrument (point-spread) function, model comparison, multi sensor data fusion, image processing, tomography, reconstruction, deformable models, pattern recognition, classification and group analysis, segmentation/edge detection, brain shape, marginalization, algorithms, complexity, Ockham's razor as an inference tool, foundations of probability theory, symmetry, history of probability theory and computability. MAXENT 97 and these proceedings could not have been brought to final form without the support and help of a number of people |
