TitleSelf-Organization and Associative Memory
Author(s)Kohonen, Teuvo
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1989.
DescriptionXV, 312 p. 100 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteWhile the present edition is bibliographically the third one of Vol. 8 of the Springer Series in Information Sciences (IS 8), the book actually stems from Vol. 17 of the series Communication and Cybernetics (CC 17), entitled Associative Memory - A System-Theoretical Approach, which appeared in 1977. That book was the first monograph on distributed associative memories, or "content-addressable memories" as they are frequently called, especially in neural-networks research. This author, however, would like to reserve the term "content-addressable memory" for certain more traditional constructs, the memory locations of which are selected by parallel search. Such devices are discussed in Vol. 1 of the Springer Series in Information Sciences, Content-Addressable Memories. This third edition of IS 8 is rather similar to the second one. Two new discussions have been added: one to the end of Chap. 5, and the other (the L VQ 2 algorithm) to the end of Chap. 7. Moreover, the convergence proof in Sect. 5.7.2 has been revised

TitleMaximum Entropy and Bayesian Methods Garching, Germany 1998 : Proceedings of the 18th International Workshop on Maximum Entropy and Bayesian Methods of Statistical Analysis
Author(s)Linden, Wolfgang von der;Dose, Volker;Fischer, Rainer;Preuss, Roland
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1999.
DescriptionXVI, 365 p : online resource
Abstract NoteIn 1978 Edwin T. Jaynes and Myron Tribus initiated a series of workshops to exchange ideas and recent developments in technical aspects and applications of Bayesian probability theory. The first workshop was held at the University of Wyoming in 1981 organized by C.R. Smith and W.T. Grandy. Due to its success, the workshop was held annually during the last 18 years. Over the years, the emphasis of the workshop shifted gradually from fundamental concepts of Bayesian probability theory to increasingly realistic and challenging applications. The 18th international workshop on Maximum Entropy and Bayesian Methods was held in Garching / Munich (Germany) (27-31. July 1998). Opening lectures by G. Larry Bretthorst and by Myron Tribus were dedicated to one of th the pioneers of Bayesian probability theory who died on the 30 of April 1998: Edwin Thompson Jaynes. Jaynes revealed and advocated the correct meaning of 'probability' as the state of knowledge rather than a physical property. This inter?? pretation allowed him to unravel longstanding mysteries and paradoxes. Bayesian probability theory, "the logic of science" - as E.T. Jaynes called it - provides the framework to make the best possible scientific inference given all available exper?? imental and theoretical information. We gratefully acknowledge the efforts of Tribus and Bretthorst in commemorating the outstanding contributions of E.T. Jaynes to the development of probability theory

TitleWide-Field Spectroscopy : Proceedings of the 2nd Conference of the Working Group of IAU Commission 9 on ???Wide-Field Imaging??? held in Athens, Greece, May 20???25, 1996

DescriptionXXV, 405 p : online resource
Abstract NoteE. KONTIZAS Astronomical Institute National Observatory of Athens P. O. Box 20048 Athens GR-1181O GREECE The international conference on "Wide-Field Spectroscopy" and its sub?? ject matter were agreed during the general assembly of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in August 1994 by the Working Group of Com?? mision 9 "Wi de-Field Imaging". This meeting gave an opportunity to world experts on this subject to gather in Athens, in order to discuss the cur?? rent exploitation and the impending opportunities that exist in the area of multi-object spectroscopy, with particular emphasis on: 1. Astronomical instruments, data acquisition, processing and analysis techniques. 2. Astrophysical problems best tackled through wide-field, multi-object spectroscopy. The new fibre optic technology offers an important tool for the advancement of basic research and the development of industrial applications. Astronom?? ical spectroscopy is a field of astronomy which has contributed much to the advancement of fundamental physics. The spectra of hot stars have been used to determine the well-known Balmer formula for the wavelength of hydrogen lines, in the late 19th century. Since then, spectroscopy has made enormous progress in stellar atmosphere studies, in kinematics, and in the detection of high redshifts in the Universe. The traditional techniques of obtaining wide-field spectroscopic data are based on slitless spectroscopy (objective prism). Several observations, world wide, make use ofthese tech?? niques in order to obtain information on the spectral properties of objects in large areas of the sky

TitleTechnological singularity: Managing the Journey
Author(s)Victor Callaghan (ed.);James Miller (ed.);Roman Yampolskiy (ed.);Stuart Armstrong (ed.)
PublicationBerlin, Springer,
Descriptionxii, 261p.
Abstract NoteThis volume contains a selection of authoritative essays exploring the central questions raised by the conjectured technological singularity. In informed yet jargon-free contributions written by active research scientists, philosophers and sociologists, it goes beyond philosophical discussion to provide a detailed account of the risks that the singularity poses to human society and, perhaps most usefully, the possible actions that society and technologists can take to manage the journey to any singularity in a way that ensures a positive rather than a negative impact on society. The discussions provide perspectives that cover technological, political and business issues. The aim is to bring clarity and rigor to the debate in a way that will inform and stimulate both experts and interested general readers.
