Title | Perspectives in Turbulence Studies : Dedicated to the 75th Birthday of Dr. J. C. Rotta International Symposium DFVLR Research Center, G??ttingen, May 11???12, 1987 |
Author(s) | Meier, Hans U;Bradshaw, Peter |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1987. |
Description | X, 504 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The present volume entitled "Perspectives in Turbulence Stud?? ies" is dedicated to Dr. Ing. E. h. Julius C. Rotta in honour of his 75th birthday. J. C. Rotta, born on January 1, 1912, started his outstanding career in an unusual way, namely in a drawing office (1928 - 1931). At the same time he - as a purely self taught perso- took a correspondence course in airplane construction. From 1934 to 1945 he worked in the aircraft industry on different subjects in the fields of flight mechanics, structures, air?? craft design, and aerodynamics. In 1945 he moved to Gottingen and worked from that time at the Aerodynamische Versuchsanstalt (AVA, now DFVLR) and the Max-Planck-Institut fur Stromungsforschung (1947-1958), interrupted only by a stay in the U. S. at the Glenn L. Martin Company (1954 - 1955) and a visiting professorship at the Laval University in Quebec, Canada (1956). Already during his activities in industry, Dr. Rotta discovered his special liking for aerodynamics. In Gottingen, he was attracted by Ludwig Prandtl's discussions about problems associated with turbulence and in particular his new contribution to fully developed turbulence, published in 1945. At that time, W. Heisenberg and C. F. v. Weizacker pub?? lished their results on the energy spectra of isotropic turbu?? lence at large wave numbers. Since that time his main research interest in reasearch has been in turbulence problems |

Title | Numerical and Physical Aspects of Aerodynamic Flows II |
Author(s) | Cebeci, T |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1984. |
Description | XI, 416 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The Second Symposium on Numerical and Physical Aspects of Aerodynamic Flows was held at California State University, Long Beach, from 17 to 20 January 1983. Forty-eight papers were presented, including Keynote Lec?? tures by A. M. 0. Smith and J. N. Nielsen, in ten technical sessions which were supplemented and complemented by two Open Forum Sessions, involving a further sixteen technical presentations and a Panel Discussion on the "Identification of priorities for the development of calculation methods for aerodynamic bodies. " The Symposium was attended by 120 research workers from nine countries and, as in the First Symposium, provided a basis for research workers to communicate, to assess the present status of the subject and to formulate priorities for the future. In contrast to the First Symposium, the papers and discussion were focused more clearly on the subject of flows involving the interaction between viscous and inviscid regions and the calculation of pressure, velocity and temperature characteristics as a function of geometry, angle of attack and Mach number. Rather more than half the papers were concerned with two-dimensional configurations and the remainder with wings, missiles and ships. This volume presents a selection of the papers concerned with two?? dimensional flows and a review article specially prepared to provide essen?? tial background information and link the topics of the individual papers |

Title | Theory of Structured Multiphase Mixtures |
Author(s) | Dobran, Flavio |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1991. |
Description | IX, 225 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | In this volume the author gives a detailed presentation of his theory of multiphase mixtures with structure. The book also addresses students, and in addition encourages further research. Based on the concept of averaging the field equations, conservation and balance equations are developed. A material deformation postulate leads to structured mixtures. The resulting model is compared with those in use elsewhere. The final chapters are devoted to constitutive theory and constitutive equations. In particular, two-phase mixtures are treated in some detail |

Title | Wave Turbulence Under Parametric Excitation : Applications to Magnets |
Author(s) | L'vov, Victor S |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1994. |
Description | XX, 330 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | WAVE TURBULENCE is a state of a system of many simultaneously excited and interacting waves characterized by an energy distribution which is not in any sense close to thermodynamic equilibrium. Such situations in a choppy sea, in a hot plasma, in dielectrics under arise, for example, a powerful laser beam, in magnets placed in a strong microwave field, etc. Among the great variety of physical situations in which wave turbulence arises, it is possible to select two large limiting groups which allow a detailed analysis. The first is fully developed wave turbulence arising when energy pumping and dissipation have essentially different space scales. In this case there is a wide power spectrum of turbulence. This type of turbulence is described in detail e. g. in Zakharov et al. 1 In the second limiting case the scales in which energy pumping and dissipation occur are the same. As a rule, in this case a narrow, almost singular spectrum of turbulence appears which is concentrated near surfaces, curves or even points in k-space. One of the most important, widely investigated and instructive examples of this kind of turbulence is parametric wave turbulence appearing as a result of the evolution of a parametric instability of waves in media under strong external periodic modulation (laser beam, microwave electromagnetic field, etc. ). The present book deals with parametric wave turbulence |

Title | Bubble Dynamics and Interface Phenomena : Proceedings of an IUTAM Symposium held in Birmingham, U.K., 6???9 September 1993 |
Author(s) | Blake, John R;Boulton-Stone, Jeremy M;Thomas, Neale H |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1994. |
Description | XVII, 494 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This volume contains papers presented at the IUTAM Symposium on Bubble Dynamics and Interface Phenomena held at the University of Birmingham from 6-9 September 1993. In many respects it follows on a decade later from the very successful IUTAM Symposium held at CALTECH in June 1981 on the Mechanics and physics of bubbles in liquids which was organised by the late Milton Plesset and Leen van Wijngaarden. The intervening period has seen major development with both experiment and theory. On the experimental side there have been ad?? vances with very high speed photography and data recording that provide detailed information on fluid and interface motion. Major developments in both computer hardware and software have also led to extensive improvement in our understand?? ing of bubble and interface dynamics although development is still limited by the sheer complexity of the laminar and turbulent flow regimes often associated with bubbly flows. The symposium attracts wide and extensive interest from engineers, physical, chemical, biological and medical scientists and applied mathematicians. The sci?? entific committee sought to achieve a balance between theory and experiment over a range of fields in bubble dynamics and interface phenomena. It was our intention to emphasise both the breadth and recent developments in these various fields and to encourage cross-fertilisation of ideas on both experimental techniques and theo?? retical developments. The programme, and the proceedings recorded herein, cover bubble dynamics, sound and wave propagation, bubbles in flow, sonoluminescence, acoustic cavitation, underwater explosions, bursting bubbles and ESWL |

Title | Numerical Methods in Fluid Dynamics |
Author(s) | Holt, M |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1977. |
Description | VIII, 256 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This monograph is based on a graduate course, Mechanical Engipeering 266, which was developed over a number of years at the University of California-Berkeley. Shorter versions of the course were given at the University of Paris VI in 1969, and at the University of Paris XI in 1972. The course was originally presented as the last of a three quarter sequence on Compressible Flow Theory, with emphasis on the treatment of non-linear problems by numerical techniques. This is reflected in the material of the first half of the book, covering several techniques for handling non-linear wave interaction and other problems in Gas Dynamics. The techniques have their origins in the Method of Characteristics (in both two and three dimensions). Besides reviewing the method itself the more recent techniques derived from it, firstly by Godunov and his group, and secondly by Rusanov and his co-workers, are described. Both these approaches are applicable to steady flows calculated as asymptotic states of unsteady flows and treat elliptic prob?? lems as limiting forms of unsteady hyperbolic problems. They are there?? fore applicable to low speed as well a~ to high speed flow problems. The second half of the book covers the treatment of a variety of steady flow problems, including effects of both viscosity and compressibi?? lity, by the Method of Integral Relations, Telenin's Method, and the Method of Lines |

Title | Modeling Complex Turbulent Flows |
Author(s) | Salas, Manuel D;Hefner, Jerry N;Sakell, Leonidas |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1999. |
Description | X, 385 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Turbulence modeling both addresses a fundamental problem in physics, 'the last great unsolved problem of classical physics,' and has far-reaching importance in the solution of difficult practical problems from aeronautical engineering to dynamic meteorology. However, the growth of supercom?? puter facilities has recently caused an apparent shift in the focus of tur?? bulence research from modeling to direct numerical simulation (DNS) and large eddy simulation (LES). This shift in emphasis comes at a time when claims are being made in the world around us that scientific analysis itself will shortly be transformed or replaced by a more powerful 'paradigm' based on massive computations and sophisticated visualization. Although this viewpoint has not lacked ar?? ticulate and influential advocates, these claims can at best only be judged premature. After all, as one computational researcher lamented, 'the com?? puter only does what I tell it to do, and not what I want it to do. ' In turbulence research, the initial speculation that computational meth?? ods would replace not only model-based computations but even experimen?? tal measurements, have not come close to fulfillment. It is becoming clear that computational methods and model development are equal partners in turbulence research: DNS and LES remain valuable tools for suggesting and validating models, while turbulence models continue to be the preferred tool for practical computations. We believed that a symposium which would reaffirm the practical and scientific importance of turbulence modeling was both necessary and timely |
