TitleChanging Landscapes of Nuclear Physics : A Scientometric Study on the Social and Cognitive Position of German-Speaking Emigrants Within the Nuclear Physics Community, 1921???1947
Author(s)Fischer, Klaus
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1993.
DescriptionV, 256 p. 1 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteNuclear physics between 1921 and 1947 shaped more than any other science thepolitical landscape of our century and the public opinion on physical research. Using quantitative scientometric methods, a new branch in the history of science, the author focuses on the developments of nuclear physics in these formative years paying special attention to theimpact of German emigrants on the evolution of the field as a cognitive and social unity. The book is based on a thorough analysis of various citation analyses thus producing results that should be more replicable and more objective. The scientometric techniques should complement the more qualitative approach usually applied in historical writing. This makes the text an interesting study also for the historian in general

TitleLow Temperature Detectors for Neutrinos and Dark Matter : Proceedings of a Workshop, Held at Ringberg Castle, Tegernsee, May 12???13, 1987
Author(s)Pretzl, Klaus;Schmitz, Norbert;Stodolsky, Leo
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1987.
DescriptionX, 159 p : online resource
Abstract NoteFor the last few years astrophysicists and elementary particle physicists have been working jointly on the following fascinating phenomena: 1. The solar neutrino puzzle and the question: What happens to the neutrinos on their way from the sun to the earth? 2. The growing evidence that our universe is filled with about 10 times more matter than is visible and the question: What is dark matter made of? 3. The supernovae explosions and the question: What do neutrinos tell us about such explosions and vice versa? The experimental investigation of these phenomena is difficult and involves unconventional techniques. These are presently under development, and bring together such seemingly disparate disciplines as astrophysics and elementary particle physics on the one hand and superconductivity and solid-state physics on the other. This book contains the proceedings of a workshop held in March 1987 at which the above subjects and their experimental investigation were discussed. The proposed experimental methods are very new. They involve frontier developments in low temperature and solid-state physics. The book should be useful to researchers and students who actively work on these subjects or plan to enter the field. It also offers the non-expert reader with some physics background a good survey of the activities in this field

TitleThe Future of Muon Physics : Proceedings of the International Symposium on The Future of Muon Physics, Ruprecht-Karls-Universit??t Heidelberg, Heidelberg, Federal Republic of Germany, 7???9 May, 1991
Author(s)Jungmann, Klaus;Hughes, Vernon W;Putlitz, Gisbert zu
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1992.
DescriptionVII, 307 p. 102 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis volume comprises a collection of invited papers presented at the interna?? tional symposium "The Future of Muon Physics", May 7-9 1991, at the Ruprecht?? Karls-Universitat in Heidelberg. In the inspiring atmosphere of the Internationales Wissenschaftsforum researchers working worldwide at universities and at many inter?? national accelerator centers came together to review the present status of the field and to discuss the future directions in muon physics. The muon, charged lepton of the second generation, was first oberved some sixty years ago~ Despite many efforts since, the reason for its existence still remains a secret to the scientific community challenging both theorists and experimentalists. In modern physics the muon plays a key role in many topics of research. Atomic physics with negative muons provides excellent tests of the theory of quantum electrodynamics and of the electro-weak interaction and probes nuclear properties. The. purely leptonic hydrogen-like muonium atom allows tests of fun?? damental laws in physics and the determination of precise values for fundamental constants. New measurements of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon will probe the renormalizability of the weak interaction and will be sensitive to physics beyond the standard model. The muon decay is the most carefully studied weak process. Searches for rare decay modes of muons and for the conversion of muonium to antimuonium examine the lepton number conservation laws and new speculative theories. Nuclear muon capture addresses fundamental questions like tests of the CPT theorem

TitleMesons and Light Nuclei ???95 : Proceedings of the 6th International Conference, Str???? pod Ralskem, July 3???7, 1995
Author(s)Adam, J;Dobes, J;Mach, R;Sotona, M;Dolejsi, J
PublicationVienna, Springer Vienna, 1996.
DescriptionXVII, 530 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe International Conference Mesons and Light Nuclei, organized by the Institute of Nuclear Physics (INP), Rez, was held during July 2 - 7, 1995 in small north Bohemian town Straz pod Ralskem. It was the sixth in a series of meetings which took place previously at Liblice 74 and 81, Bechyne 85 and 88, and Prague 91. The conferences gained already their firm position among intermediate energy nuclear physics activities. International nuclear physics community strongly supported our intention to continue the series. This year's venue for the conference was the accommodation and social area of the DIAMO company at Straz. The goal of the meeting was to summarize the present situation and the future perspectives concerning the experimental investigations and theoreti?? cal descriptions of light nuclei and their interactions with electromagnetic and hadronic probes, mainly at intermediate energies. The scientific program of the conference included the following areas of research: nuclear physics with pions and antiprotons, T)-meson physics, baryonic systems with strangeness, relativis?? tic few-body dynamics, and electroweak nuclear interaction. Representatives from many international groups working within different experimental facili?? ties and with different theoretical methods were invited and asked to present their latest results and future research programs. The Straz conference, attended by 102 physicist from institutions in 22 countries, was sponsored by the Austrian Ministry for Science and Research, Czech Ministry for Industry and Trade, and by SKODA PRAHA a.s. Thanks to this sponsorship we could also invite several participants and students at essentially reduced cost

TitlePhysics and Astrophysics of Neutrinos
Author(s)Fukugita, Masataka;Suzuki, Atsuto
PublicationTokyo, Springer Japan, 1994.
DescriptionXIII, 934 p : online resource
Abstract NoteObservations of neutrinos being emitted by the supernova SN1987A, star neutrinos, and atmospheric neutrinos by means of underground detectors have provided new insights into astronomy. These observations have brought to light new unresolved phenomena such as the solar neutrino problem, spurring investigative studies among particle physicists and astrophysicists. Today, intense interaction and continual cooperation between specialists in the field of particle physics and astronomy/cosmology are a pre-requisite for conducting further studies. This book provides detailed elaborations on selected topics. One of the most important features of this book is its enumeration of a number of basic properties of neutrinos and their relationship to Grand Unified Theories. It does not cover all aspects of neutrino theory, but rather focuses on the origin of the neutrino's mass and the generation mixing of neutrinos. The neutrino experiments described were carried out mainly by Japanese researchers. All the kamiokande results, detector performances, and complete references are included. Experiments regarding the neutrino's mass are represented in the direct mass measurement, the double beta-decay experiment, and the neutrino oscillation experiment. The detection of low-energy astrophysical neutrinos is discussed. Particle acceleration mechanisms in astrophysics and the detection of high-energy gamma-rays and neutrinos are also represented

PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1999.
DescriptionXII, 241 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis monograph deals with the most useful and modern methods for characterising the inorganic materials such as glasses and glass-ceramics, traditional and advanced. After a short chapter focused on determination of rare earths in ceramics and minerals, there are three chapters showing the fundamentals and main applications of most advanced microstructure techniques for investigating glasses and ceramics: new microscopies (STM, AFM) and electron microscopy methods such as CBED and HREM. Three more chapters are dedicated to the basis and wide applications of thermal methods, one focused on applications on zeolite materials. The XRD for texture analysis and recent advances in fluorescence methods are also considered in two chapters. Finally, the M??ssbauer spectroscopy for the investigation of glasses and glass-ceramics and neutron diffraction for the same type of materials is widely treated

TitleAdvances in Turbulence VI : Proceedings of the Sixth European Turbulence Conference, held in Lausanne, Switzerland, 2???5 July 1996
Author(s)Gavrilakis, S;Machiels, L;Monkewitz, P.A
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1996.
DescriptionXXI, 634 p : online resource
Abstract NoteAdvances in Turbulence VI presents an update on the state of turbulence research with some bias towards research in Europe, since it represents an almost complete collection of the paper presentations at the Sixth European Turbulence Conference, sponsored by EUROMECH, ERCOFTAC and COST, and held at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, July 2-5, 1996. The problem of transition, together with the structural description of turbulence, and the scaling laws of fully developed turbulence have continued to receive most attention by the research community and much progress has been made since the last European Turbulence Conference in 1994. The volume is thus geared towards specialists in the area of flow turbulence who could not attend the conference, as well as anybody who wishes quickly to assess the most active current research areas and the groups associated with them

TitleModern Gas-Based Temperature and Pressure Measurements
Author(s)Pavese, Franco;Molinar Min Beciet, Gianfranco
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1992.
DescriptionXIX, 514 p. 6 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteSince the beginning of the preparation of this volume, we have been convinced that temperature and pressure measurements should not be separated, particularly in different applications at low temperatures. This belief has made us deeply conscious of the fact that the advanced applications and modern experimental methods of investigation in science and technology need the combination of various professional experiences and approaches. Although the book is divided into two parts (Part I by F. Pavese and Part II by G. F. Molinar), we have tried to correlate low-temperature and low-pressure measurements as much as possible. We hope that our readers will find this book, which contains a large number of experimental and reference data, useful in their effort to solve measurement problems. We are pleased to acknowledge our debt to several persons and wish to express our gratitude to them for their valuable cooperation and help: to our research group colleagues at the Istituto di Metrologia "G. Colonnetti" -IMGC (CNR), without whom the knowledge and the experience we built up during many years could not have been acquired; to G. T. McConville, M. Durieux, and K. Grohmann for revisions of and various suggestions for Part I; to V. E. Bean and C. R. Tilford of NIST and G. T. McConville for revisions of and various suggestions for Part II; and to I. Prinetti of IMGC for many valuable suggestions and careful textual revisions
