TitleToroidal Multipole Moments in Classical Electrodynamics : An Analysis of their Emergence and Physical Significance
Author(s)Nanz, Stefan
PublicationWiesbaden, 1. Imprint: Springer Spektrum 2. Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden, 2016.
DescriptionXI, 87 p. 4 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteStefan Nanz investigates the necessity for three multipole families in classical electrodynamics. He shows that by imposing symmetry and parity constraints, it is sufficient to deal with only two multipole families. This implies that the toroidal multipole moments do not represent an independent multipole family, and they only emerge in the long-wavelength limit. Contents Symmetry Considerations of Charge-Current Distributions Multipole Expansion of the Electromagnetic Potentials and Fields Conclusions for the Physical Significance of Toroidal Multipole Moments Target Groups Researchers and students in the field of physics Practitioners in the field of optics and photonics The Author Stefan Nanz studied physics at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and wrote his Master Thesis in the group of Prof. Dr. Carsten Rockstuhl. There, he is now a PhD student and working on tailored disorder of scattering interfaces and photon management in solar cells

TitleFast Gates and Mixed-Species Entanglement with Trapped Ions
Author(s)Sch??fer, Vera M
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2020.
DescriptionXVI, 155 p. 69 illus., 65 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteQuantum logic gates are the crucial information-processing operation of quantum computers. Two crucial performance metrics for logic gates are their precision and speed. Quantum processors based on trapped ions have always been the touchstone for gate precision, but have suffered from slow speed relative to other quantum logic platforms such as solid state systems. This thesis shows that it is possible to accelerate the logic "clock speed" from kHz to MHz speeds, whilst maintaining a precision of 99.8%. This is almost as high as the world record for conventional trapped-ion gates, but more than 20 times faster. It also demonstrates entanglement generation in a time (480ns) shorter than the natural timescale of the ions' motion in the trap, which starts to probe an interesting new regime of ion trap physics. In separate experiments, some of the first "mixed-species" quantum logic gates are performed, both between two different elements, and between different isotopes. The mixed-isotope gate is used to make the first test of the quantum-mechanical Bell inequality between two different species of isolated atoms

TitleAtomic Scale Dynamics at Surfaces : Theory and Experimental Studies with Helium Atom Scattering
Author(s)Benedek, Giorgio;Toennies, Jan Peter
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2018.
DescriptionXXVI, 625 p. 230 illus., 53 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteExperimental advances in helium atom scattering spectroscopy over the last forty years have allowed the measurement of surface phonon dispersion curves of more than 200 different crystal surfaces and overlayers of insulators, semiconductors and metals. The first part of the book presents, at a tutorial level, the fundamental concepts and methods in surface lattice dynamics, and the theory of atom-surface interaction and inelastic scattering in their various approximations, up to the recent electron-phonon theory of helium atom scattering from conducting surfaces. The second part of the book, after introducing the experimentalist to He-atom spectrometers and the rich phenomenology of helium atom scattering from corrugated surfaces, illustrates the most significant experimental results on the surface phonon dispersion curves of various classes of insulators, semiconductors, metals, layered crystals, topological insulators, complex surfaces, adsorbates, ultra-thin films and clusters. The great potential of helium atom scattering for the study of atomic scale diffusion, THz surface collective excitations, including acoustic surface plasmons, and the future prospects of helium atom scattering are presented in the concluding chapters. The book will be valuable reading for all researchers and graduate students interested in dynamical processes at surfaces

TitleScattering and Structures : Essentials and Analogies in Quantum Physics
Author(s)Povh, Bogdan;Rosina, Mitja
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2017.
DescriptionXVII, 227 p. 119 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteQuantum physics may appear complicated, especially if one forgets the "big picture" and gets lost in the details. However, it can become clearer and less tangled if one applies a few fundamental concepts so that simplified approaches can emerge and estimated orders of magnitude become clear. Povh and Rosina???s Scattering and Structures presents the properties of quantum systems (elementary particles, nucleons, atoms, molecules, quantum gases, quantum liquids, stars, and early universe) with the help of elementary concepts and analogies between these seemingly different systems. In this new edition, sections on quantum gases and an up to date overview of elementary particles have been added

TitleFew-Body Problems in Physics ???99 : Proceedings of the 1st Asian-Pacific Conference, Tokyo, Japan, August 23???28, 1999
Author(s)Oryu, S;Kamimura, M;Ishikawa, S
PublicationVienna, Springer Vienna, 2000.
DescriptionXIX, 537 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe first Asia-Pacific Conference on Few-Body Problems in Physics took place from August 23 to August 28, 1999, at the Noda campus of the Sci?? ence University of Tokyo in Noda-city and Sawayaka Chiba Kenmin Plaza in Kashiwa-city, a suburb of Tokyo close to the Narita-Tokyo International Air?? port, with the Frontier Research Center for Computation Sciences (FRCCS) of the Science University of Tokyo as the host institute. The High Energy Accel?? erator Research Organization (KEK), the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research (RIKEN), the Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP)-Osaka University, the Physical Society of Japan, and the Association of Asia Pacific Physical Societies (AAPPS) supported this conference. The conference was initiated in the Asia Pacific area as a counterpart to the successful European Conference on Few-Body Problems in Physics (APFB99), in addition to the International Few-Body Conference Series and the Few?? Body Gordon Conference series in North America. The Physics of Few-Body Problems covers, as is well known, systems with finite numbers of particles in contrast to many-body systems with very large numbers of particles. Therefore, it covers such wide fields as mesoscopic, atom-molecular, exotic atom, nucleon, hyperon, and quark-gluon physics, plus their applications
