TitleFew-Body Problems in Physics ???02 : Proceedings of the XVIIIth European Conference on Few-Body Problems in Physics, Bled, Slovenia, September 8???14, 2002
Author(s)Krivec, Rajmund;Rosina, Mitja;Golli, Bojan;??irca, Simon
PublicationVienna, Springer Vienna, 2003.
DescriptionXVII, 428 p : online resource
Abstract NoteIn this Supplement we have collected the invited and contributed talks pre?? sented at the XVIII European Conference on Few-Body Problems in Physics, organised by the Jozef Stefan Institute and the University of Ljubljana, Slove?? nia. The Conference, sponsored by the European Physical Society, took place at the lakeside resort of Bled from 8 to 14 September, 2002. This meeting was a part of the series of European Few-Body Conferences, previously held in Evora/Portugal (2000), Autrans/France (1998), Peniscola/Spain (1995), ... Our aim was to emphasise, to a larger extent than at previous Conferences, the interdisciplinarity of research fields of the Few-Body community. To pro?? mote a richer exchange of ideas, we therefore strived to avoid parallel sessions as much as possible. On the other hand, to promote the participation of young scientists who we feel will eventually shape the future of Few-Body Physics, we wished to give almost all attendees the opportunity to speak

Author(s)Kallenrode, May-Britt
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2004.
DescriptionXIV, 482 p : online resource
Abstract NoteSpace is a large natural plasma laboratory offering a wealth of phenomena which range from the simple to the highly complex and non-linear. This book begins with an introduction to basic principles such as single-particle motion, magnetohydrodynamics and plasma waves. It incorporates these concepts into an analysis of complex phenomena including the sun and solar activity, shocks, interplanetary space and magnetospheres, and finally the interaction between these entities in solar-terrestrial relationships. In all these subfields of space research, special attention is paid to energetic particles. The book concludes with a brief chapter on instrumentation. In this third edition, numerous examples have been added to illustrate the basic concepts and aid the reader in applying such concepts to real world physics. In addition, recent observations (ACE, TRACE, Wind) have been included. The chapter on solar-terrestrial relationships has been expanded to introduce the current research topic of Space Weather

TitlePolarization and Correlation Phenomena in Atomic Collisions : A Practical Theory Course
Author(s)Balashov, Vsevolod V;Grum-Grzhimailo, Alexei N;Kabachnik, Nikolai M
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 2000.
DescriptionX, 246 p : online resource
Abstract NotePolarization and Correlation Phenomena in Atomic Collisions: A Practical Theory Course bridges the gap between traditional courses in quantum mechanics and practical investigations. The authors' goal is to guide students in training their ability to perform theoretical calculations of polarization and correlation characteristics of various processes in atomic collisions. The book provides a concise description of the density matrix and statistical tensor formalism and presents a general approach to the description of angular correlation and polarization phenomena. It illustrates an application of the angular momentum technique to a broad variety of atomic processes. The book contains derivations of the most important expressions for observable quantities in electron-atom and ion-atom scattering, including that for polarized beams and/or polarized targets, in photo-induced processes, autoionization and cascades of atomic transitions. Spin-polarization and angular distributions of the reaction products are described, including the angular correlations in different types of coincidence measurements. The considered processes exemplify the general approach and the number of examples can be easily extended by a reader. The book supplies researchers, both theoreticians and experimentalists with a collection of helpful formulae and tables, and can serve as a reference book. Based on a highly regarded course at Moscow State University and elsewhere, the book provides real guidance on theoretical calculations of practical use

TitleAtomic Physics at Accelerators: Stored Particles and Fundamental Physics : Proceedings of the APAC 2001, held in Aarhus, Denmark, 8???13 September 2001
Author(s)Knudsen, Helge;Andersen, Jens Ulrik;Kluge, Heinz-J??rgen
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2003.
DescriptionIX, 351 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis volume contains the proceedings of the third Euroconference on Atomic Phys?? ics at Accelerators (APAC 2001), with the title Stored Particles and Fundamental Physics. It was held in Aarhus, Denmark, from September 8 to 13 at the Marselis Hotel located near the beach and the Marselis Woods outside Aarhus, but some of the activities took place at the Department of Physics, University of Aarhus. The conference was sponsored by the Commission of the European Union (Contract No. ERBFMMACT980469) and also by the Danish Research Foundation through ACAP (Aarhus Center for Atomic Physics). The meeting was focused on the application of storage rings for atomic physics, and there are two fairly small rings in Aarhus, ASTRID (Aarhus STorage Ring for Ions,Denmark) and ELISA (ELectrostatic Ion Storage ring, Aarhus). The research at these rings has contributed to the strong position of European Science in this field. Both rings are designed according to unique concepts. ASTRID is a dual?? purpose ring, which half the time stores electrons for the generation of low-energy synchrotron radiation. The storage of negative particles has also been a unique feature for the application of ASTRID as an ion storage ring

TitleThe Geometric Phase in Quantum Systems : Foundations, Mathematical Concepts, and Applications in Molecular and Condensed Matter Physics
Author(s)Bohm, Arno;Mostafazadeh, Ali;Koizumi, Hiroyasu;Niu, Qian;Zwanziger, Josef
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2003.
DescriptionXXI, 427 p : online resource
Abstract NoteAimed at graduate physics and chemistry students, this is the first comprehensive monograph covering the concept of the geometric phase in quantum physics from its mathematical foundations to its physical applications and experimental manifestations. It contains all the premises of the adiabatic Berry phase as well as the exact Anandan-Aharonov phase. It discusses quantum systems in a classical time-independent environment (time dependent Hamiltonians) and quantum systems in a changing environment (gauge theory of molecular physics). The mathematical methods used are a combination of differential geometry and the theory of linear operators in Hilbert Space. As a result, the monograph demonstrates how non-trivial gauge theories naturally arise and how the consequences can be experimentally observed. Readers benefit by gaining a deep understanding of the long-ignored gauge theoretic effects of quantum mechanics and how to measure them

PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2000.
DescriptionX, 300 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book discusses the basic principles of the theory of kinetic processes in molecular gases and low-temperature plasmas, including plasma-surface interaction. Emphasis is placed on the analysis of translational, rotational, vibrational and electronically excited state kinetics, coupled to the electron Boltzmann equation. Numerous data for molecular parameters, cross sections and rate coefficients for different relaxation processes are provided. These data are used to model and interpret the non-equilibrium phenomena in nitrogen, oxygen and their mixtures under different plasma conditions (gas discharges, ionosphere, space reentry, sound and shock wave propagation). This book will be very useful to all scientists and graduate students interested in plasma physics, plasma chemistry, physics of the ionosphere, chemistry and optics of the atmosphere, non-equilibrium aerodynamics and physical-chemical kinetics
