TitlePrinciples of Geodynamics
Author(s)Scheidegger, A.E
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1982.
DescriptionXVIII, 398 p. 8 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteGeodynamics is commonly thought to be one of the subjects which provide the basis for understanding the origin of the visible surface features of the Earth: the latter are usually assumed as having been built up by geodynamic forces originating inside the Earth ("endogenetic" processes) and then as having been degrad?? ed by geomorphological agents originating in the atmosphere and ocean ("exogenetic" agents). The modem view holds that the sequence of events is not as neat as it was once thought to be, and that, in effect, both geodynamic and geomorphological processes act simultaneously ("Principle of Antagonism"); however, the division of theoretical geology into the principles of geodynamics and those of theoretical geomorphology seems to be useful for didactic purposes. It has therefore been maintained in the present writer's works. This present treatise on geodynamics is the first part of the author's treatment of theoretical geology, the treatise on Theoretical Geomorphology (also published by the Springer Verlag) representing the second. The present edition is third one of the book. Although the headings of the chapters and sections are much the same as in the previous editions, it will be found that most of the material is, in fact, new

TitleThe Deep Proterozoic Crust in the North Atlantic Provinces
Author(s)Tobi, Alex C;Touret, Jacques L.R
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1985.
DescriptionXV, 603 p. 117 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThe Proterozoic terrains of South Scandinavia and the Grenville Province in North-America have many common features : Regional high?? grade metamorphism (Granulite-facies), anorthosites, etc. They are separated by the Caledonian orogeny and, above all, by the Atlantic Ocean. During the time of the great continental drift controversy, few people were ready to admit that both sides on the Atlantic were once an unique province. Now everybody agrees on the Post-paleozoic age of the Atlantic and, consequently, on the intrinsic homogeneity of the much older. rocks which occur around it. But a detailed comparison is not easy. The Grenville Province is much larger than South Scandinavia, both regions have been investigated by a great number of different schools, using various methods, approaches and concepts. After several attempts, and long discussion, it was felt by a small group of individuals, that literature study would not be enough and that nothing could re?? place the direct contact, in the field, of specialists who had a first?? hand knowledge of all involved regions. The formula of a NATO Advanced Study Institute, which gives a unique opportunity to meet and mix people of various origin and levels, came almost by itself. Much work was needed, much help has been obtained, as detailed in the "Acknowledgements"

TitleTidal Friction and the Earth???s Rotation II : Proceedings of a Workshop Held at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF) of the University of Bielefeld, September 28???October 3, 1981
Author(s)Brosche, P;S??ndermann, J??rgen
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1982.
DescriptionXVI, 348 p. 30 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteIn the four years which elapsed between our first workshop on .Tidal Friction and the Earth's Rotation and the second, the proceedings of which are presented here, many of the disciplines involved made ad?? vances which we felt should be exchanged. We were encouraged by the good reception our first report met with. Of course, more insight often means more problems. Therefore, this volume contains new results and revisions of matters which previously appeared settled. We are certainly far from "final answers". For this reason, differing opinions on some issues are to be found in this book. Moreover, we have refrained from making mathematical symbols uniform to avoid the risk of errors and non-compatibility with the earlier work of an author. The two workshops have stimulated collaboration between participants working in various fields. The final versions of the contributions have already profited from these discussions. We are convinced that they will also influence further investigations. This advancement of our past and future aims is based on the very existence of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies and on the support we have received from its leading members. The authors have agreed to dedicate this book to Dr. H. Gerstenkorn, who died in 1981. He contributed fundamental ideas to the scientific fields treated in the meeting. P. TitleBall Lightning : An Unsolved Problem in Atmospheric Physics
Author(s)Stenhoff, Mark
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1999.
DescriptionXVI, 349 p : online resource
Abstract NoteDown comes a deluge of sonorous hail, Or prone-descending rain. Wide-rent, the clouds Pour a whole flood, and yet, its flame unquenched, Th???unconquerable lightning struggles through. Ragged and fierce, or in red whirling balls, And fires the mountains with redoubled rage. Black from the stroke, above, the smould???ring pine Stands a sad shattered trunk; and, stretched below, A lifeless group the blasted cattle lie. James Thompson, ???The Seasons??? (1727) have been investigating ball lightning for more than two decades. I published a ball lightning report in Nature in 1976 that received worldwide publicity and I consequently many people wrote to me with accounts of their own experiences. Within a very short time, I had accumulated about 200 firsthand accounts, and the file has continued to grow steadily since then. Several things impressed me. Few of those who wrote to me had any detailed foreknowledge of ball lightning at the time of their observation. Nonetheless, once reports of other phenomena such as St. Elmo???s fire had been eliminated, the remaining descriptions were remarkably consistent. Furthermore, nearly all who contacted me were keen to have an explanation of what they had seen and seemed entirely sincere

TitleTables of Ordinary and Extraordinary Refractive Indices, Group Refractive Indices and h???o,x(f)-Curves for Standard Ionospheric Layer Models
Author(s)Becker, W
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1960.
DescriptionIV, 108 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe N(h)-Working Party, a Group in Commission III of URS! (URS! Information Bulletin No. 112, p. 12) suggested these calculations of ordinary and extraordinary refractive indices n , vertical group refractive indices c/U , and virtual o,x o,x 1 heights h (f), for an Epstein, cosine and parabolic layer model. c ist the free 0 X 1 space velocity of light . U and U denote vertical ordinary and extraordinary 0 X group velocities. The data are intended to facilitate real height (h) computations from 1 1 observed, h (f)-traces. Especially the h (f)-data are intended also to allow o,x o,x for tests of existing reduction methods. For ionization minimum investigations an additional set of tables is presented. These tables represent the virtual paths 1 6 h (f) of sounding pulses which penetrate an ionospheric layer of parabolic o,x 1 shape; they can be used together with the abovementioned standard h (f)-curves o,x 1 to give ordinary and extraordinary h (f)-traces for any combination of a lower O, X parabolic layer and an upper Epstein, cosine or parabolic electron density distribution. Ordinary group refractive index tables have already been published by D. H. SHINN [ 1] 1 and by Vv. BECKER [ 2] ??? Their value s of cp , the angle of inclination of the earth s magnetic field, are slightly different from those used here. These tables may be used 1 as additional sets for interpolation purposes. D. TitleDynamics of Geomagnetically Trapped Radiation
Author(s)Roederer, J. G
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1970.
DescriptionXIV, 166 p : online resource
Abstract NoteSince the discovery of geomagnetically trapped radiation by Van Allen in 1958, an impressive amount of experimental information on the earth's particle and field environment has nourished research work for scores of scientists and thesis work for their students. This quest has challenged space-age technology to produce better and more sophisticated instru?? ments and has challenged the international scientific community and governments to establish more, and more effective, cooperative programs of research and information exchange. As a result, an orderly picture of the principal physical mechanisms governing the earth's radiation environment is beginning to emerge. The interest in this topic has reached far beyond the domain of geo?? physics. Indeed, we find trapped radiation elsewhere in the universe: Jupiter's radiation belts, particle trapping in sunspot magnetic fields, cosmic rays confined in interstellar fields and, possibly, ultra-high-energy particles trapped in the magnetic fields of rotating neutron stars. There is abundant technical and scientific literature available on Van Allen radiation; comprehensive reviews are published regularly in journals* or have been collected in book form**, and books have been written on the subject***. The aim of this monograph is to complement the existing literature with a concise discussion of the basic dynamical processes that control the earth's radiation belts. It is mainly intended to help a graduate student or a researcher new to this field to understand the underlying physics and to provide him with guidelines for quantita?? tive, numerical applications of the theory

TitleSatellite Beacons Observations from 1964 to 1970
Author(s)Hartmann, G. K;Oberl??nder, K;Schmidt, G;Sch??del, J. P
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1972.
Description98 p. 6 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteFrom October 1964 to May 1969 the 40 MHz, 41 MHz, and 360 MHz signals of the satellite Explo?? 0 0 rer 22, were recorded at Lindau (51,650 N; 10,125 E). The Faraday effect recordings at 40 MHz and 41 MHz and Dispersive-Doppler-effect recordings at 40 MHz and 360 MHz were used to calculate the ionospheric electron content up to 1000 km. The mean electron content for 1 hour periods over a period 0 of three months as obtained at 51. 6 N geographic latitude as derived from various evaluation methods is presented. Furthermore, the relevant critical frequency FOF2 is displayed. A similar presentation was chosen for the calculated slabthickness data. For one specific case the daily variation of the electron con?? tent as determined by measurements was compared with a relevant theoretical curve. The agreement, was fairly good. Due to technical problems the beacons were switched off in 1969. Now the five orbiting FS-NNSS satellites provide a good possibility to determine the ionospheric electron content up to 1100 km fairly accurately by evaluating the Dispersive Doppler recordings obtained at 150 MHz and 400 MHz. The amplitude recordings of the 40 MHz and 41 MHz signals of Explorer 22 were furthermore used for amplitude scintillation studies. Simultaneous Dispersive-Doppler-recordings enabled in part also pha?? se scintillation studies. Phase and amplitude recordings were compared

TitleModeling Density-Driven Flow in Porous Media : Principles, Numerics, Software
Author(s)Holzbecher, Ekkehard O
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1998.
DescriptionXVII, 286 p. 117 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteModeling of flow and transport in groundwater has become an important focus of scientific research in recent years. Most contributions to this subject deal with flow situations, where density and viscosity changes in the fluid are neglected. This restriction may not always be justified. The models presented in the book demonstrate immpressingly that the flow pattern may be completely different when density changes are taken into account. The main applications of the models are: thermal and saline convection, geothermal flow, saltwater intrusion, flow through salt formations etc. This book not only presents basic theory, but the reader can also test his knowledge by applying the included software and can set up own models

TitleDevelopments in Geophysical Exploration Methods???3
Author(s)Fitch, A.A
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1982.
DescriptionX, 310 p : online resource
Abstract NoteOne of the themes in current geophysical development is the bringing together of the results of observations made on the surface and those made in the subsurface. Several benefits result from this association. The detailed geological knowledge obtained in the subsurface can be extrapolated for short distances with more confidence when the geologi?? cal detail has been related to well-integrated subsurface and surface geophysical data. This is of value when assessing the characteristics of a partially developed petroleum reservoir. Interpretation of geophysical data is generally improved by the experience of seeing the surface and subsurface geophysical expression of a known geological configuration. On the theoretical side, the understanding of the geophysical processes themselves is furthered by the study of the phenomena in depth. As an example, the study of the progress of seismic wave trains downwards and upwards within the earth has proved most instructive. This set of original papers deals with some of the more vigorous developments in subsurface geophysics: and it is hoped that it will contribute to the understanding of geophysical phenomena in the solid. The editor thanks the busy workers in the several fields who have made time to produce these contributions
