Nick Kanas is an Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco, where he directed the group therapy training program. For over 20 years he conducted research in group therapy, and for nearly 20 years after that he was the Principal Investigator of NASA-funded research on astronauts and cosmonauts. He is the co-author of Space Psychology and Psychiatry, which won the 2004 International Academy of Astronautics Life Science Book Award. Dr. Kanas has presented talks on space psychology and on celestial mapping at several regional and World Con science fiction conventions. He has been an amateur astronomer for over 50 years and is an avid reader of science fiction. In both research and clinical practice, several advantages of cognitive therapy have been identified. | Abstract Note | The initial conceptualization of this book was much more narrow than the final product that has emerged. I started out believing that it would be enlightening to have a group of acknowledged rational-emotive therapy (RET) expert practitioners with well-established literary credentials write about how they approach the problem of modifying dient irrationality. Many RET practitioners of all levels of experience are, on the one hand, enamored of the economy, the precision, and the accuracy of psychological insight that RET theory offers, but they are, on the other hand, equally frustrated by their own inability to "persuade" or otherwise change some of the dients they work with more quickly or even at all. Indeed, dients themselves frequently express the view that RET is illuminating, yet they find themselves at the same time puzzled and perplexed by their inability to make the substantial changes that RET invites. In others it is, but the available conclusions the information supports block its acceptance, because they conflict with the posi?? tions of dominant groups in the politics of sexuality. Possibly the most obvious example is the determination of many theorists to ignore the evidence that while men rarely report being sexually assaulted, when questioned in community surveys, they make up a third of the victims, and a quarter of the perpetrators of sexual assault are women. These findings are incompatible with the feminist theory that sexual assault is not a sexual act, but normal male behavior motivated politically, to maintain men's dominance of women. Most research supporting the theory investigated women only as victims and men only as aggressors. Some feminists have dismissed the need for any research to support their beliefs on the ground that such research is "busy work" establishing what women already know. One belief considered not to require re?? search is that heterosexual pornography made for a male audience increases the prevalence of rape by encouraging rape-supportive attitudes of male aggression and female submission. No criticism has been directed at the soft-core pornography of "Mills and Boon" stories written for women that promote similar attitudes |

| Abstract Note | In 1977, the current editors contributed a review article on behavioral group therapy to a volume of Hersen, Miller, and Eisler's Progress in Behavior Modi?? fication series (1977). At that time we noted that, despite the advantages to both clinicians and clients of conducting behavioral treatments in groups, clinical developments and research in this area were still at a relatively rudimen?? tary level. The majority of studies in the behavioral group therapy literature we reviewed reported the direct transfer of an individual behavior therapy pro?? cedure, such as systematic desensitization, to a group of clients with homoge?? neous problems, such as snake phobia or test anxiety. Groups were used in many studies merely to generate sufficient numbers of subjects to allow various types of interventions to be compared, rather than to examine group process variables per se. Only a limited amount of attention had been given to whether these group interaction variables (such as group discussion, sharing ideas and feelings, and mutual feedback and reinforcement) might enhance individually oriented procedures applied in a group. The 8 years since this original chapter was written have seen a significant growth in both the breadth and depth of clinical research and work in the behavioral group therapy field. This growth was documented in part in a three?? volume series on behavioral group therapy by the current editors (Upper & Ross, 1979, 1980, 1981) |
