TitleBrain Dynamics : Synchronization and Activity Patterns in Pulse-Coupled Neural Nets with Delays and Noise
Author(s)Haken, Hermann
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2002.
DescriptionXII, 249 p. 82 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book addresses a large variety of models in mathematical and computational neuroscience. It is written for the experts as well as for graduate students wishing to enter this fascinating field of research. The author studies the behaviour of large neural networks composed of many neurons coupled by spike trains. He devotes the main part to the synchronization problem. He presents neural net models more realistic than the conventional ones by taking into account the detailed dynamics of axons, synapses and dendrites, allowing rather arbitrary couplings between neurons. He gives a complete stabile analysis that goes significantly beyond what has been known so far. He also derives pulse-averaged equations including those of the Wilson--Cowan and the Jirsa-Haken-Nunez types and discusses the formation of spatio-temporal neuronal activity pattems. An analysis of phase locking via sinusoidal couplings leading to various kinds of movement coordination is included

TitleHumans in Space : The Psychological Hurdles
Author(s)Kanas, Nick
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2015.
DescriptionXIV, 149 p. 43 illus., 41 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteUsing anecdotal reports from astronauts and cosmonauts, and the results from studies conducted in space analog environments on Earth and in the actual space environment, this book broadly reviews the various psychosocial issues that affect space travelers. Unlike other books that are more technical in format, this text is targeted for the general public. With the advent of space tourism and the increasing involvement of private enterprise in space, there is now a need to explore the impact of space missions on the human psyche and on the interpersonal relationships of the crewmembers. Separate chapters of the book deal with psychosocial stressors in space and in space analog environments; psychological, psychiatric, interpersonal, and cultural issues pertaining to space missions; positive growth-enhancing aspects of space travel; the crew-ground interaction; space tourism; countermeasures for dealing with space; and unique aspects of a trip to Mars, the outer solar system, and interstellar travel.

TitleThe New Martians : A Scientific Novel
Author(s)Kanas, Nick
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2014.
DescriptionVIII, 123 p. 2 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThe year is 2035, and the crew from the first expedition to Mars is returning to Earth. The crewmembers are anxious to get home, and ennui pervades the ship. The mood is broken by a series of mysterious events that jeopardize their safety. Someone or something is threatening the crew. Is it an alien being? A psychotic crewmember? A malfunctioning computer? The truth raises questions about the crewmembers??? fate and that of the human race. ??In this novel, the intent is to show real psychological ??issues that could affect a crew returning from a long-duration mission to Mars. The storyline presents a mystery that keeps the reader guessing, yet the issues at stake are based on the findings from the author???s research and other space-related work over the past 40+ years. The novel touches on actual plans being discussed for such an expedition as well as notions involving the search for Martian life and panspermia. The underlying science, in particular the psychological, psychiatric, and interpersonal elements, are introduced and discussed by the author in an extensive appendix. Nick Kanas is an Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco, where he directed the group therapy training program. For over 20 years he conducted research in group therapy, and for nearly 20 years after that he was the Principal Investigator of NASA-funded research on astronauts and cosmonauts. He is the co-author of Space Psychology and Psychiatry, which won the 2004 International Academy of Astronautics Life Science Book Award. Dr. Kanas has presented talks on space psychology and on celestial mapping at several regional and World Con science fiction conventions. He has been an amateur astronomer for over 50 years and is an avid reader of science fiction. He is also the author of Star Maps: History, Artistry, and Cartography and Solar System Maps: From Antiquity to the Space Age, both published by Springer. >

TitleThe Challenge of Cognitive Therapy : Applications to Nontraditional Populations
Author(s)Vallis, T. Michael;Howes, Janice L;Miller, Philip C
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1991.
DescriptionXII, 186 p : online resource
Abstract NoteCognitive therapy is fast becoming one of the more popular and well?? respected forms of psychotherapy. In both research and clinical practice, several advantages of cognitive therapy have been identified. Cognitive therapy is structured enough to provide a therapeutic framework for clinicians, as well as a theoretical framework for clinical researchers, yet flexible enough to address an individual's problems in a highly idio?? syncratic manner. Accompanying the popularity of cognitive therapy is the expansion of its application beyond the areas in which it was initially developed and validated (the "traditional" areas of depression and anx?? iety) to areas where validation has not yet occurred (the "nontraditional" areas). We strongly believe that such broadening of cognitive therapy should be encouraged, but that conceptual models to guide the therapist and researcher in these areas should be explicated. It is the purpose of this text to provide a conceptual framework for dealing with select, nontraditional populations. The idea and motivation for this text develops from a cognitive therapy interest group in Toronto. All of the authors contributing to this text are involved in this group. We represent a group of cognitive thera?? pists functioning in a variety of diverse settings, including clinical re?? search units, general hospital settings, private or public rehabilitation centers, and private practices. Thus, the diversity of referrals for cogni?? tive therapy within our group is great

TitleTherapeutic Change : An Object Relations Perspective
Author(s)Blatt, Sidney J;Ford, Richard Q
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1994.
DescriptionXXVIII, 300 p : online resource
Abstract NoteDynamic psychotherapy research has become revitalized, especially in the last three decades. This major study by Sidney Blatt, Richard Ford, and their associates evaluates long-term intensive treatment (hospital?? ization and 4-times-a-week psychotherapy) of very disturbed patients at the Austen Riggs Center. The center provides a felicitous setting for recovery-beautiful buildings on lovely wooded grounds just off the quiet main street of the New England town of Stockbridge, Massa?? chusetts. The center, which has been headed in succession by such capable leaders as Robert Knight, Otto Will, Daniel Schwartz, and now Edward Shapiro, has been well known for decades for its type of inten?? sive hospitalization and psychotherapy. Included in its staff have been such illustrious contributors as Erik Erikson, David Rapaport, George Klein, and Margaret Brenman. The Rapaport-Klein study group has been meeting there yearly since Rapaport's death in 1960. Although the center is a long-term care treatment facility, it remains successful and solvent even in these days of increasingly short-term treatment. Sidney Blatt, Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at Yale Univer?? sity, and Richard Ford of the Austen Riggs Center, and their associates assembled a sample of 90 patients who had been in long-term treatment and who had been given (initially and at 15 months) a set of psychologi?? cal tests, including the Rorschach, the Thematic Apperception Test, a form of the Wechsler Intelligence Test, and the Human Figure Drawings

TitleUsing Rational-Emotive Therapy Effectively : A Practitioner's Guide
Author(s)Bernard, Michael E
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1991.
DescriptionXVI, 350 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe initial conceptualization of this book was much more narrow than the final product that has emerged. I started out believing that it would be enlightening to have a group of acknowledged rational-emotive therapy (RET) expert practitioners with well-established literary credentials write about how they approach the problem of modifying dient irrationality. Many RET practitioners of all levels of experience are, on the one hand, enamored of the economy, the precision, and the accuracy of psychological insight that RET theory offers, but they are, on the other hand, equally frustrated by their own inability to "persuade" or otherwise change some of the dients they work with more quickly or even at all. Indeed, dients themselves frequently express the view that RET is illuminating, yet they find themselves at the same time puzzled and perplexed by their inability to make the substantial changes that RET invites. It became dearer as I discussed the project with many of the contrib?? utors that to practice RET effectively requires more than just innovative and persistent assessment and intervention techniques. For example, Rus?? sell Grieger expressed the view that more prerequisite work needs to be done on the value and philosophical systems of dients-induding person?? al responsibility and the philosophy of happiness-before many dients can show significant shifts in their thinking. Susan Walen raised the gener?? al issues of how effective RET can be in the treatment of biologically driven affective disorders

TitleHandbook of the Brief Psychotherapies
Author(s)Wells, Richard A;Giannetti, Vincent J
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1990.
DescriptionXX, 604 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe last two decades have seen unprecedented increases in health care costs and, at the same time, encouraging progress in psychotherapy research. On the one hand, accountability, cost-effectiveness, and efficiency have now become commonplace terms for providers of mental health services whereas, on the other hand, an increasingly voluminous literature has emerged supporting the effectiveness of a number of types of psychotherapies. There now exists the possibility for the design and delivery of mental health services that-drawing upon this literature-more closely approximate empirically established data concerning the appropriateness and effectiveness of psychotherapy. The Handbook of the Brief Psychotherapies is intended to capture one major thrust of this movement: the development of a group of empirically grounded, time-limited therapies all sharing a common interest in the clinical utilization of a structured focus and an emphasis on time and action. For many years, professional self-interest, competing theoretical para?? digms, and the vagaries of practice, wisdom, and clinical myth have influenced the practice of psychotherapy. A critical questioning of the resulting, predomi?? nantly nondirective, open-ended, and global therapies has led to a growing emphasis on action-oriented, problem-focused, time-limited therapies. Yet, ironically, this interest in the brief psychotherapies has not so much involved a radical departure from traditional therapeutic modalities as it has emphasized a new pragmatism about how time, action, and structure operate in life as well as in therapy

TitleSexual Behavior : Problems and Management
Author(s)McConaghy, Nathaniel
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1993.
DescriptionXII, 414 p : online resource
Abstract NoteMany issues remain unresolved in sexuality. In some cases this is because the infor?? mation is not available to resolve them. In others it is, but the available conclusions the information supports block its acceptance, because they conflict with the posi?? tions of dominant groups in the politics of sexuality. Possibly the most obvious example is the determination of many theorists to ignore the evidence that while men rarely report being sexually assaulted, when questioned in community surveys, they make up a third of the victims, and a quarter of the perpetrators of sexual assault are women. These findings are incompatible with the feminist theory that sexual assault is not a sexual act, but normal male behavior motivated politically, to maintain men's dominance of women. Most research supporting the theory investigated women only as victims and men only as aggressors. Some feminists have dismissed the need for any research to support their beliefs on the ground that such research is "busy work" establishing what women already know. One belief considered not to require re?? search is that heterosexual pornography made for a male audience increases the prevalence of rape by encouraging rape-supportive attitudes of male aggression and female submission. No criticism has been directed at the soft-core pornography of "Mills and Boon" stories written for women that promote similar attitudes

PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1998.
DescriptionVIII, 344 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book surveys recent developments in the analysis of physiological time series. The authors, physicists and mathematicans, physiologists and medical researchers, have succeeded in presenting a review of the new field of nonlinear data analysis as needed for more refined computer-aided diagnostics. Together with the techniques, they actually propose a new approach to the problems. Practitioners may find the many applications to the cardio-respiratory system, EEG analysis, motor control and voice signals very useful

TitleHandbook of Behavioral Group Therapy
Author(s)Upper, Dennis;Ross, Steven M
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1985.
DescriptionXII, 513 p : online resource
Abstract NoteIn 1977, the current editors contributed a review article on behavioral group therapy to a volume of Hersen, Miller, and Eisler's Progress in Behavior Modi?? fication series (1977). At that time we noted that, despite the advantages to both clinicians and clients of conducting behavioral treatments in groups, clinical developments and research in this area were still at a relatively rudimen?? tary level. The majority of studies in the behavioral group therapy literature we reviewed reported the direct transfer of an individual behavior therapy pro?? cedure, such as systematic desensitization, to a group of clients with homoge?? neous problems, such as snake phobia or test anxiety. Groups were used in many studies merely to generate sufficient numbers of subjects to allow various types of interventions to be compared, rather than to examine group process variables per se. Only a limited amount of attention had been given to whether these group interaction variables (such as group discussion, sharing ideas and feelings, and mutual feedback and reinforcement) might enhance individually oriented procedures applied in a group. The 8 years since this original chapter was written have seen a significant growth in both the breadth and depth of clinical research and work in the behavioral group therapy field. This growth was documented in part in a three?? volume series on behavioral group therapy by the current editors (Upper & Ross, 1979, 1980, 1981)
