Author(s)Dietrich, Volker;Habetha, Klaus;Jank, Gerhard
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1998.
DescriptionXXXII, 447 p : online resource
Abstract NoteClifford Algebras continues to be a fast-growing discipline, with ever-increasing applications in many scientific fields. This volume contains the lectures given at the Fourth Conference on Clifford Algebras and their Applications in Mathematical Physics, held at RWTH Aachen in May 1996. The papers represent an excellent survey of the newest developments around Clifford Analysis and its applications to theoretical physics. Audience: This book should appeal to physicists and mathematicians working in areas involving functions of complex variables, associative rings and algebras, integral transforms, operational calculus, partial differential equations, and the mathematics of physics

TitleMixed Crystals
Author(s)Kitaigorodsky, A. I
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1984.
DescriptionXIV, 390 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe two-word title of this book can only give an indication about its content and approach to the subject it deals with. In the course of time, the term has gradually become somewhat blurred. The reason is easy to see: similar problems are now more and more frequently studied by different branches of natural science. The term "mixed crystals" has acquired specific connotations in physics, chemistry, biology, and geology. One and the same term can now serve as a name for things which are either not quite the same or sometimes quite different. And this is precisely what happened to the two words in the title of the book. One of them, the term "crystal", for which crystallography had an un?? ambiguous definition, is now employed by biologists to describe the structure of cell membranes and by chemists who use it to denote degrees of polymer crystallinity. "Crystal" has thus become a broad term that can help describe any solid, or just a condensed state of a substance, if the solid has a suf?? ficient degree of order in the arrangement of its components. But the book is called "~lixed Crystals". The other word in its title, the adjective "mixed", has also developed several meanings. It is now thought ap?? plicable to both homogeneous and heterogeneous systems, that is, to crystals composed of different molecules and also to solids that are a mixture of crys?? tals with different structures

TitleRotation and Mixing in Stellar Interiors : Proceedings of the Workshop Frontiers in Stellar Structure Theory, Held in Honor of Professor Evry Schatzman in Les Houches, France, June 19???25, 1989
Author(s)Goupil, Marie-Jo;Zahn, Jean-Paul
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1990.
DescriptionXIII, 186 p. 6 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThe 14 papers in this collection discuss recent progress in areas such as mixing in stellar interiors, redistribution and loss of angular momentum, emphasizing in particular the effects of turbulence. An introductory review by E. Schatzman, to whom this volume is dedicated, is followed by three sections: observational facts (surface abundances, stellar rotation, loss of mass and angular momentum, etc.), physical knowledge (mass transport and mixing by waves, turbulent transport, fast dynamo action, etc.), and the interpretation of observations

TitleThe Physics of the Two-Dimensional Electron Gas
Author(s)Devreese, J.T;Peeters, F.M
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1987.
DescriptionIX, 441 p. 38 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThe 1986 Advanced Study Institute on "The Physics of the two-Dimen?? sional Electron Gas" took place at the Conference Centre liTer Helme", close to Oostende (Belgium), from June 2 till 16, 1986. We were motivated to organize this Advanced Study Institute in view of the recent experimental and theoretical progress in the study of the two-dimensional electron gas. An additional motivation was our own theore?? tical interest in cyclotron resonance in two-dimensional electron systems at our institute. It is my pleasure to thank several instances and people who made this Advanced Study Institute possible. First of all, the sponsor of the Advanced Study Institute, the NATO Scientific Committee. Furthermore, the co?? sponsors: Agfa Gevaert, Bell Telephone Mfg. Co. N.V., Burroughs Belgium. Control Data. Digital Equipment Corporation, Esso Belgium. European Research Office (USA). Kredietbank. National Science Foundation (USA). Special thanks are due to the members of the Program Committee and the members of the Organizing Committee. I would also like to thank Mrs. H. Evans for typing assistance

TitleLiterature 1969, Part 2
Author(s)B??hme, Siegfried;Fricke, Walter;G??ntzel-Lingner, Ulrich;Henn, Frieda;Krahn, Dietlinde;Zech, Gert
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1970.
DescriptionX, 516 p : online resource
Abstract NoteAstronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts, which appears in semi-annual volumes, is devoted to the re?? cording, summarizing and indexing of astronomical publications throughout the world. It aims to pre?? sent a comprehensive documentation of literature in all fields of astronomy and astrophysics. Every effort will be made to ensure that the average time interval between the date of receipt of the original literature and publication of the abstracts will not exceed eight months. This time interval is near to that achieved by monthly issued abstracting journals, compared to which our system of accumulating abstracts for about six months offers the advantage of greater convenience for the user. Volume 2 contains literature published in 1969 and received before March 15, 1970; some older lite?? rature which was received late and which is not recorded in Volume 1 is also included. The authors of papers who have sent us abstracts on request have effectively contributed to the suc?? cess of our service. We should like to express our gratitude to them. We acknowledge with thanks con?? tributions to this volume by Dr. J. Bou~a, who surveyed journals and publications in Czech language and supplied us with abstracts in English, by Dr. B. Onderlicka, Brno, for providing English ab?? stracts of Russian papers, and by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (C.S.I.R.O.), Sydney, for providing titles and abstracts of papers on radio astronomy

TitleChallenges of Astronomy : Hands-on Experiments for the Sky and Laboratory
Author(s)Schlosser, W;Schmidt-Kaler, T;Milone, E.F
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 1991.
DescriptionVIII, 236 p : online resource
Abstract NoteChallenges of Astronomy in a unique collection of thirty astronomy experiments ranging from ancient astronomy to cosmology. Each of the experiments contains one or more challenges for the reader. The progression is from the Earth outward through the solar system to the stellar and galactic realm. Topics include the shape of the sky, Stonehenge as a stoneage abacus, determination of the size of the Earth, the distance of the Moon and planets, Kepler's laws, planetary mass and density, the temperatures and atmospheres of planets, the speed of light, the distances of stars, the nature of the quiet and active Sun, photometry and spectroscopy, stars clusters and variable stars, fundamental properties of stars, and Olber's paradox. Challenges of Astronomy is a translation and extensive revision of a German-language resource book for secondary school teachers of science. Physical science teachers will find this edition too a rich resource of experiments to their own milieus, but it is suitable for many other English-language readers too, from northern and southern hemisphere locations. The beginning experiments are suitable for bright high school and non-science major university students while the later experiments which offer increasingly difficult challenges are more suitable for sciences majors. Amateurs with a variety of skills will find this hands-on book entertaining, informative, and useful
