Title | An Axiomatic Basis for Quantum Mechanics : Volume 2 Quantum Mechanics and Macrosystems |
Author(s) | Ludwig, G??nther |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1987. |
Description | X, 244 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | In the first volume we based quantum mechanics on the objective description of macroscopic devices. The further development of the quantum mechanics of atoms, molecules, and collision processes has been described in [2]. In this context also the usual description of composite systems by tensor products of Hilbert spaces has been introduced. This method can be formally extrapolated to systems composed of "many" ele?? mentary systems, even arbitrarily many. One formerly had the opinion that this "extrapolated quantum mechanics" is a more comprehensive theory than the objec?? tive description of macrosystems, an opinion which generated unsurmountable diffi?? culties for explaining the measuring process. With respect to our foundation of quan?? tum mechanics on macroscopic objectivity, this opinion would mean that our founda?? tion is no foundation at all. The task of this second volume is to attain a compatibility between the objective description of macrosystems and an extrapolated quantum mechanics. Thus in X we establish the "statistical mechanics" of macrosystems as a theory more compre?? hensive than an extrapolated quantum mechanics. On this basis we solve the problem of the measuring process in quantum mechan?? ics, in XI developing a theory which describes the measuring process as an interaction between microsystems and a macroscopic device. This theory also allows to calculate "in principle" the observable measured by a device. Neither an incorporation of consciousness nor a mysterious imagination such as "collapsing" wave packets are necessary |

Title | Atomic Many-Body Theory |
Author(s) | Lindgren, Ingvar;Morrison, John |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1986. |
Description | 484 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | In the new edition only minor modifications have been made. Some print?? ing errors have been corrected and a few clarifications have been made. In recent years the activity in relativistic many-body theory has increased con?? siderably, but this field falls outside the scope of this book. A brief summary of the recent developments, however, has been included in the section on "relativistic effects" in Chap. 14. In addition, only a very limited number of references have been added, without any systematic updating of the material. Goteborg, December 1985 l. Lindgren?? J. Morrison Preface to the First Edition This book has developed through a series of lectures on atomic theory given these last eight years at Chalmers University of Technology and several oth?? er research centers. These courses were intended to make the basic elements of atomic theory available to experimentalists working with the hyperfine structure and the optical properties of atoms and to provide some insight into recent developments in the theory |

Title | Jacobi Dynamics : Many-Body Problem in Integral Characteristics |
Author(s) | Ferronsky, V.I;Denisik, S.A;Ferronsky, S.V |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1987. |
Description | XI, 371 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book sets forth and builds upon the fundamentals of the dynamics of natural systems in formulating the problem presented by Jacobi in his famous lecture series "Vorlesungen tiber Dynamik" (Jacobi, 1884). In the dynamics of systems described by models of discrete and continuous media, the many-body problem is usually solved in some approximation, or the behaviour of the medium is studied at each point of the space it occupies. Such an approach requires the system of equations of motion to be written in terms of space co-ordinates and velocities, in which case the requirements of an internal observer for a detailed description of the processes are satisfied. In the dynamics discussed here we study the time behaviour of the fundamental integral characteristics of the physical system, i. e. the Jacobi function (moment of inertia) and energy (potential, kinetic and total), which are functions of mass density distribution, and the structure of a system. This approach satisfies the requirements of an external observer. It is designed to solve the problem of global dynamics and the evolution of natural systems in which the motion of the system's individual elements written in space co-ordinates and velocities is of no interest. It is important to note that an integral approach is made to internal and external interactions of a system which results in radiation and absorption of energy. This effect constitutes the basic physical content of global dynamics and the evolution of natural systems |

Title | Shock Waves in Condensed Matter |
Author(s) | Gupta, Y. M |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1986. |
Description | 970 p. 406 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | The Fourth American Physical Society Topical Conference on Shock Waves in Condensed Matter was held in Spokane, Washington, July 22-25, 1985. Two hundred and fifty scientists and engineers representing thirteen countries registered at the conference. The countries represented included the United States of America, Australia, Canada, The People's Repub?? lic of China, France, India, Israel, Japan, Republic of China (Taiwan), United Kingdom, U. S. S. R, Switzerland and West Germany. One hundred and sixty-two technical papers, cov?? ering recent developments in shock wave and high pressure physics, were presented. All of the abstracts have been published in the September 1985 issue of the Bulletin of the American Physical Society. The topical conferences, held every two years since 1979, have become the principal forum for shock wave studies in condensed materials. Both formal and informal technical discussions regarding recent developments conveyed a sense of excitement. Consistent with the past conferences, the purpose of this conference was to bring together scientists and engineers studying the response of condensed matter to dynamic high pressures and temperatures. Papers covering experimental, theoretical, and numerical studies of con?? densed matter properties were presented. A noteworthy feature of this conference was the participation by several leading scientists engaged in static high pressure research. Donald Curran served as the Master of Ceremonies at the conference banquet, which was at?? tended by two hundred and seventy-five conference participants and guests including Dr. Samuel Smith, the new President of Washington State University. Title | Polymer Applications of Renewable-Resource Materials |
Author(s) | Carraher Jr., Charles E;Sperling, L.H |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1983. |
Description | XIII, 469 p. 75 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | For there is hope of a tree, If it be cut down, That it will sprout again And that the tender branch Thereof will not cease. Job XIV (7) Mankind has been blessed with a multitude of resources. In the beginning he utilized almost soley replenishable items such as vegetation and animal protein, for both nourishment and shelter. Gradually, such metals as copper and iron were developed and replaced wood as a material of construction. Cement and glass, although more plentiful than other minerals, also replaced the use of growing sub?? stances. Coal and oil became the primary sources of heat and power. Closer to the focus of this book, petroleum products began to replace the vegetable oils, tannin, wool, cotton, leather, silk, rubber, etc. in a host of applications. Surely, it was argued, the new materials did the job better and cheaper. What they didn't say is that soon we would run out of oil. In any case, research on growing natural products, now called renewable resources, slowed, and these industries sought only to maintain their status quo. The 20th Century saw an unprecedented emphasis and dependence on nonrenewable resources as energy sources (petroleum, coal, ura?? nium) and the fabric of technology (drugs, clothing, shelter, tires, computer parts). The predawn of the 21st Century brings a reali?? zation that a cyclic shift back towards the use of renewable re?? sources for technological application is in order |

Title | The Quantum Hall Effect |
Author(s) | Prange, Richard E;Girvin, Steven M |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 1990. |
Description | XVIII, 473 p. 1 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | After a foreword by Klaus von Klitzing, the first chapters of this book discuss the prehistory and the theoretical basis as well as the implications of the discovery of the Quantum Hall effect on superconductivity, superfluidity, and metrology, including experimentation. The second half of this volume is concerned with the theory of and experiments on the many body problem posed by fractional effect. Specific unsolved problems are mentioned throughout the book and a summary is made in the final chapter. The quantum Hall effect was discovered on about the hundredth anniversary of Hall's original work, and the finding was announced in 1980 by von Klitzing, Dorda and Pepper. Klaus von KIitzing was awarded the 1985 Nobel prize in physics for this discovery |
