Title | Non-Linearity and Breakdown in Soft Condensed Matter : Proceedings of a Workshop Held at Calcutta, India 1???9 December 1993 |
Author(s) | Bardhan, Kamal K;Chakrabarti, Bikas K;Hansen, Alex |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1994. |
Description | XI, 340 p. 70 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | There have been considerable advances in recent times in understanding many common material processes that are of practical importance, such as nonlinear response, fracture, breakdown, earthquakes, packing, and granular flow, that are of immense practical importance. This has been mainly due to new applications of statistical physics, including percolation theory, fractal concepts and self-organized criticality. This collection of articles brings together research in those closely allied fields. It deals with problems in material science involving random geometries and nonlinearity at a mesoscopic scale, where local disorder and nonlinearity influence the global behaviour of cracks, for example, and problems where randomness in time evolution is as crucial as the geometry itself |

Title | Galactic Dynamics and N-Body Simulations : Lectures Held at the Astrophysics School VI Organized by the European Astrophysics Doctoral Network (EADN) in Thessaloniki, Greece, 13???23 July 1993 |
Author(s) | Contopoulos, G;Spyrou, N.K;Vlahos, L |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1994. |
Description | XIV, 417 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book provides an in-depth coverage of modern research on dynamical systems. The first part discusses stellar dynamics, integrable systems, the transition to chaos and instabilities in stellar dynamics as well as the dynamics of spiral galaxies. Models are given and compared with observations. The second part is devoted to the direct method of N-body simulations, to gas dynamics simulations and to galaxy formation. Special care is taken to give to a pedagogical presentation of the material which makes this a unique text well suited for graduate courses in astrophysics |

Title | Instability and Transition : Materials of the workshop held May 15-June 9, 1989 in Hampton, Virgina Volume 1 |
Author(s) | Hussaini, M.Y;Voigt, Robert G |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 1990. |
Description | XXXII, 439 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | These two volumes contain the proceedings of the workshop on the Institute for Computer Instability and Transition, sponsored by Applications in Science and Engineering (ICASE) and the Langley Research Center (LaRC), during May 15 to June 9, 1989. The work?? shop coincided with the initiation of a new, focused research pro?? gram on instability and transition at LaRC. The objectives of the workshop were to (i) expose the academic community to current technologically important issues of instability and transition in shear flows over the entire speed range, (ii) acquaint the academic com?? munity with the unique combination of theoretical, computational and experimental capabilities at LaRC and foster interaction with these facilities, (iii) review current state-of-the-art and propose fu?? ture directions for instability and transition research, (iv) accelerate progress in elucidating basic understanding of transition phenomena and in transferring this knowledge into improved design methodolo?? gies through improved transition modeling, and (v) establish mech?? anisms for continued interaction. The objectives (i) to (iii) were of course immediately met. It is still premature to assess whether ob?? jectives (iv) and (v) are achieved. The workshop program consisted of tutorials, research presenta?? tions, panel discussions, experimental and computational demonstra?? tions, and collaborative projects |

Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1995. |
Description | XII, 272 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Bifurcation and Chaos presents a collection of especially written articles describing the theory and application of nonlinear dynamics to a wide variety of problems encountered in physics and engineering. Each chapter is self-contained and includes an elementary introduction, an exposition of the present state of the art, and details of recent theoretical, computational and experimental results. Included among the practical systems analysed are: hysteretic circuits, Josephson circuits, magnetic systems, railway dynamics, rotor dynamics and nonlinear dynamics of speech. This book contains important information and ideas for all mathematicians, physicists and engineers whose work in R&D or academia involves the practical consequence of chaotic dynamics |

Title | Geometry of Supersymmetric Gauge Theories : Including an Introduction to BRS Differential Algebras and Anomalies |
Author(s) | Gieres, Francois |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1988. |
Description | VIII, 191 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This monograph gives a detailed and pedagogical account of the geometry of rigid superspace and supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories. While the core of the text is concerned with the classical theory, the quantization and anomaly problem are briefly discussed following a comprehensive introduction to BRS differential algebras and their field theoretical applications. Among the treated topics are invariant forms and vector fields on superspace, the matrix-representation of the super-Poincar?? group, invariant connections on reductive homogeneous spaces and the supermetric approach. Various aspects of the subject are discussed for the first time in textbook and are consistently presented in a unified geometric formalism. Requiring essentially no background on supersymmetry and only a basic knowledge of differential geometry, this text will serve as a mathematically lucid introduction to supersymmetric gauge theories |

Title | Time-Harmonic Electromagnetic Fields in Chiral Media |
Author(s) | Lakhtakia, Akhlesh;Varadan, Vijay K;Varadan, Vasundara V |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1989. |
Description | VII, 121 p. 8 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book deals with the fundamental aspects of electromagnetic field theory in chiral media in the frequency domain. All such aspects are covered: field equations, constitutive equations, integral equations and representations, Green's functions, radiation, reciprocity relations, and equivalence and duality relations. Scattering of waves by chiral spheres and cylinders are covered, and layered chiral media are examined. This book is timely both for theorists and experimentalists. Theorists can build upon the work to discover and predict new phenomena, while experimentalists may use it to design clever experiments and construct artificially chiral materials |
