TitleM??ssbauer Spectroscopy : Tutorial Book
Author(s)Yoshida, Yutaka;Langouche, Guido
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2013.
DescriptionX, 310 p : online resource
Abstract NoteTutorials on M??ssbauer Spectroscopy Since the discovery of the M??ssbauer Effect many excellent books have been published for researchers and for doctoral and master level students.?? However, there appears to be no textbook available for final year bachelor students, nor for people working in industry who have received only basic courses in classical mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, chemistry and materials science.?? The challenge of this book is to give an introduction to M??ssbauer Spectroscopy for this level.?? The ultimate goal of this book is to give this audience not only a scientific introduction to the technique, but also to demonstrate in an attractive way the power of M??ssbauer Spectroscopy in many fields of science, in order to create interest among the readers in joining the community of M??ssbauer spectroscopists.?? This is particularly important at times where in many M??ssbauer laboratories succession is at stake

TitleTerahertz Spectroscopy and Imaging
Author(s)Peiponen, Kai-Erik;Zeitler, Axel;Kuwata-Gonokami, Makoto
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2013.
DescriptionXXXII, 644 p : online resource
Abstract Note"This book presents the current state of knowledge in the field of terahertz spectroscopy, providing a comprehensive source of information for beginners and experienced researchers alike whose interests lie in this area. The book aims to explain the fundamental physics that underpins terahertz?? technology and to describe its key applications. Highlights of scientific research in the field of terahertz science are also outlined in some chapters, providing an overview as well as giving an insight into future directions for research. ??Over the past decade terahertz spectroscopy has developed into one of the most rapidly growing areas of its kind, gaining an important impact across a wide range of scientific disciplines. Due to substantial advances in femtosecond laser technology, terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) has established itself as the dominant spectroscopic technique for experimental scientists interested in measurements at this frequency range. In solids and liquids THz radiation is in resonance with both phonon modes and hydrogen bonding modes, which makes it an ideal tool to study the interaction between molecules in a unique way; thus opening a wealth of opportunities for research in physics, chemistry, biology, materials science and pharmaceuticals. This book provides easy access to scientists, engineers and students who want to understand the theory and applications of modern THz spectroscopy." ??

TitleFundamentals of Fluorescence Microscopy : Exploring Life with Light
Author(s)Mondal, Partha Pratim;Diaspro, Alberto
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2014.
DescriptionXV, 218 p. 140 illus., 55 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book starts at an introductory level and leads reader to the most advanced developments in fluorescence imaging and super-resolution techniques that have enabled the emergence of new disciplines such as nanobioimaging, multiphoton microscopy, photodynamic therapy, nanometrology and nanosensors. The interdisciplinary subject of fluorescence microscopy and imaging requires complete knowledge of imaging optics and molecular physics. So, this book approaches the subject by introducing optical imaging concepts before going deep into the advanced imaging systems and their applications. Molecular orbital theory forms the basis for understanding fluorescent molecules and thereby facilitates complete explanation of light-matter interaction at the geometrical focus. The two disciplines have some overlap since light controls the states of molecules and conversely, molecular states control the emitted light. These two mechanisms together determine essential fluorescence factors and phenomena such as, molecular cross-section, Stokes shift, emission and absorption spectra, quantum yield, signal-to-noise ratio, Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET), fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) and fluorescence lifetime. These phenomena form the basis of many fluorescence based devices. The book is organized into two parts. The first part deals with basics of imaging optics and its applications. The advanced part covers many imaging techniques and related instrumentation that are developed in the last decade pointing towards far-field diffraction limited and unlimited imaging

TitleUltrafast Phenomena in Molecular Sciences : Femtosecond Physics and Chemistry
Author(s)de Nalda, Rebeca;Ba??ares, Luis
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2014.
DescriptionXVII, 287 p. 122 illus., 67 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book presents the latest developments in Femtosecond Chemistry and Physics for the study of ultrafast photo-induced molecular processes.??Molecular systems, from the simplest H2 molecule to polymers or biological macromolecules, constitute central objects of interest for Physics, Chemistry and Biology, and despite the broad range of phenomena that they exhibit, they share some common behaviors. One of the most significant of those is that many of the processes involving chemical transformation (nuclear reorganization, bond breaking, bond making) take place in an extraordinarily short time, in or around the femtosecond temporal scale (1 fs = 10-15 s). A number of experimental approaches - very particularly the developments in the generation and manipulation of ultrashort laser pulses - coupled with theoretical progress, provide the ultrafast scientist with powerful tools to understand matter and its interaction with light, at this spatial and temporal scale. This book is an attempt to reunite some of the state-of-the-art research that is being carried out in the field of ultrafast molecular science, from theoretical developments, through new phenomena induced by intense laser fields, to the latest techniques applied to the study of molecular dynamics

TitleLaboratory Micro-X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy : Instrumentation and Applications
Author(s)Haschke, Michael
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2014.
DescriptionXVIII, 356 p. 254 illus., 107 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteMicro-X-ray fluorescence offers the possibility for a position- sensitive and non-destructive analysis that can be used for the analysis of non-homogeneous materials and layer systems. This analytical technique has shown a dynamic development in the last 15 years and is used for the analysis of small particles, inclusions, of elemental distributions for a wide range of different applications both in research and quality control. The first experiments were performed on synchrotrons but there is a requirement for laboratory instruments which offers a fast and immediate access for analytical results. The book discuss the main components of a ??-XRF instrument and the different measurement modes, it gives an overview about the various instruments types, considers the special requirements for quantification of non-homogeneous materials and presents a wide range of application for single point and multi-point analysis as well as for distribution analysis in one, two and three dimensions
