TitleUniaxial Pressure Study of Charge Density Waves in a High-T??? Cuprate Superconductor
Author(s)Kim, Hun-ho
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2022.
DescriptionXX, 104 p. 79 illus., 57 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book presents comprehensive studies of charge density waves (CDW) in a high-Tc cuprate superconductor using x-ray scattering techniques under uniaxial pressure. Specifically, the work addresses inelastic x-ray scattering studies under uniaxial pressure performed on the underdoped cuprate YBa2Cu3O6.67(p=0.12, Tc=65K) with incoming photon energy in the resonant (E=931.3 eV, Cu-L3 edge) and non-resonant conditions (E=17.794 keV). This is a completely new approach to the investigation of charge density waves. It revealed new features of charge density waves in cuprates, whose properties had previously been inaccessible

PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2022.
DescriptionXL, 451 p. 72 illus., 67 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book contains an inclusive compilation of perspectives about the Arctic Ocean with contributions that extend from Indigenous residents and early career scientists to Foreign Ministers, involving perspectives across the spectrum of subnational-national-international jurisdictions. The Arctic Ocean is being transformed with global climate warming into a seasonally ice-free sea, creating challenges as well as opportunities that operate short-to-long term, underscoring the necessity to make informed decisions across a continuum of urgencies from security to sustainability time scales. The Arctic Ocean offers a case study with lessons that are especially profound at this moment when humankind is exposed to a pandemic, awakening a common interest in survival across our globally-interconnected civilization unlike any period since the Second World War. This second volume in the Informed Decisionmaking for Sustainability series reveals that building global inclusion involves common interests to address changes effectively ???for the benefit of all on Earth across generations.???

TitleSlopes and Levels : Spice Models to Simulate Vintage Op-Amp Noise
Author(s)Vogel, Burkhard
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2022.
DescriptionXXX, 333 p. 337 illus., 175 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book features an extensive index and all Mathcad worksheets. Vinyl is back, tubes/valves are back, on the high-end field SMD-free analog amplification surpasses digitalized chains, and top microphone manufacturers still set on good old op-amps or on fully discrete BJT, FET, and/or tube-driven amplifiers. There is only one problem that is not satisfyingly well solved by the manufacturers: It is the noise production of the active components and the useful reflection in simulation tools, in tables or graphs of the datasheets/data books. Nowadays, mostly surrounded by many digital helping tools, it makes sense using them???also by analog aficionados. It saves cost and time simulating first before spending money. Presented in this book the software tool LTSpice which is the free software solution from Linear Technology (today Analog Devices) that could also be used by full analog lovers to simulate the noise production of their amplifier design. All we need is the right creation approach to develop simulation models for the active components. Inter alia this is already done for tubes and BJTs in the 2nd editions of my ???How to Gain Gain??? and ???Balanced Phono-Amps??? books. For op-amps, the missing approaches are presented in the book on hand. It cannot be denied that mathematical software like Mathcad is extremely helpful to find the right equations for graphically presented noise curves which we can find in the literature. Nevertheless, it also works well with other types of math software to fulfill the parameter needs of the here presented modeling approaches for the input referred voltage and current noise of???not only???excellent sounding vintage op-amps, applicable in the audio range from 1 Hz to 100 kHz

TitleMax von Laue : Intrepid and True: A Biography of the Physics Nobel Laureate
Author(s)Lemmerich, Jost
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2022.
DescriptionXXI, 413 p. 97 illus., 4 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis biography gives an insider view of 20th century German science in the making. The discovery by Max von Laue in 1912 of interference effects demonstrated the wave-like nature of X-rays and the atomic lattice structure of crystals. This major advance for research on solids earned him the Nobel Prize two years later, the ultimate acclaim as an exceptional theoretician. As an early supporter of Einstein???s relativity theory, he published fundamental papers on light scattering as well as on matter waves and superconductivity. Laue may be counted among the few persons of influence in Germany who ??? as Einstein put it ??? managed to ???stay morally upright??? under Nazism. It is thus surprising that this is the first extensive biography of this famous scientist. Jost Lemmerich could hardly have been better equipped to describe German physics and physicists in the 1920s. His copiously illustrated historical account is based as much on scientific material as on private correspondence, creating a fascinating and convincingly detailed portrait

TitleHistorical Roots of Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking : Steps Towards an Analogy
Author(s)Gaudenzi, Rocco
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2022.
DescriptionX, 131 p. 1 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteWhat are the thinking processes and knowledge resources involved in a complex discovery? How can the physics of solids, the physics of nuclei, and elementary particle physics cross-fertilise in spite of the widely differing domains and energy scales they deal with? This book addresses the questions by reconstructing and examining from the historical epistemological perspective the fascinating heuristic path to the concept of spontaneous symmetry breaking. This analysis especially brings to light the role that analogical reasoning and mathematical reformulations played in the discovery process, as well as the influence of the Japanese milieu and approach to physical problems

TitleSurface Flute Waves in Plasmas : Eigenwaves, Excitation, and Applications
Author(s)Girka, Igor;Thumm, Manfred
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2022.
DescriptionXIII, 433 p. 195 illus., 12 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book presents a comprehensive theoretical study of the electromagnetic eigenwaves propagating perpendicular to the axis of symmetry in various cylindrical waveguide-structures filled with magneto-active plasma. It is the second, updated and significantly expanded edition of our book ???Surface Flute Waves in Plasmas. Theory and Applications???, published in 2014 in the ???Springer Series on Atomic, Optical, and Plasma Physics???. First, the text is complemented by a study of the wave energy rotation around the axis of the waveguides. Second, excitation of these waves by an electron beam gyrating around the axis is investigated in detail. ???Surface waves??? means that these waves only propagate along plasma surfaces and not in uniform infinite plasmas. Their wave amplitudes decrease with going away from the plasma boundary into the plasma depth. ???Flute??? means that the axial wavenumbers kz of the waves in plasma cylinders are assumed to be zero, and the waves only propagate in azimuthal direction. In this case, the surfaces of constant density resemble fluted Greek columns. However, the presence of a small but finite kz can be taken into account by the method of successive approximations, using the theory of surface flute waves as zeroth approach. A variety of present applications of surface waves and possible future applications are also included. The book applies to both professionals dealing with physical and technological problems of confined plasmas and to graduate and post-graduate students specializing in the f??elds of electrodynamics, plasma physics and related applications

TitleHigher-Order Systems
Author(s)Battiston, Federico;Petri, Giovanni
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2022.
DescriptionX, 433 p. 112 illus., 84 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThe book discusses the potential of higher-order interactions to model real-world relational systems. Over the last decade, networks have emerged as the paradigmatic framework to model complex systems. Yet, as simple collections of nodes and links, they are intrinsically limited to pairwise interactions, limiting our ability to describe, understand, and predict complex phenomena which arise from higher-order interactions. Here we introduce the new modeling framework of higher-order systems, where hypergraphs and simplicial complexes are used to describe complex patterns of interactions among any number of agents. This book is intended both as a first introduction and an overview of the state of the art of this rapidly emerging field, serving as a reference for network scientists interested in better modeling the interconnected world we live in

TitleLaser Power Stabilization via Radiation Pressure
Author(s)Trad Nery, Marina
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2022.
DescriptionXIX, 154 p. 81 illus., 79 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book offers a comprehensive and complete description of a new scheme to stabilize the power of a laser on a level needed for high precision metrology experiments. The novel aspect of the scheme is sensing power fluctuations via the radiation pressure driven motion they induce on a micro-oscillator mirror. It is shown that the proposed technique can result in higher signals for power fluctuations than what is achieved by a direct power detection, and also that it enables the generation of a strong bright squeezed beam. The book starts with the basics of power stabilization and an overview on the current state of art. Then, detailed theoretical calculations are performed, and the advantages of the new scheme are highlighted. Finally, a proof-of-principle experiment is described and its results are analyzed in details. The success of the work presented here paves a way for achieving high power stability in future experiments and is of interest for high precision metrology experiments, like gravitational wave detectors, and optomechanical experiments. Nominated as an outstanding PhD thesis by the Gravitational Wave International Committee
