TitleGeneral Relativity and Gravitational Waves : Essentials of Theory and Practice
Author(s)Dhurandhar, Sanjeev;Mitra, Sanjit
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2022.
DescriptionXIV, 207 p. 32 illus., 16 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book serves as a textbook for senior undergraduate students who are learning the subject of general relativity and gravitational waves for the first time. Both authors have been teaching the course in various forms for a few decades and have designed the book as a one stop book at basic level including derivations and exercises. A spectacular prediction of general relativity is gravitational waves. Gravitational waves were first detected by the LIGO detectors in 2015, hundred years after their prediction. Both authors are part of the LIGO Science Collaboration and were authors on the discovery paper. Therefore, a strong motivation for this book is to provide the essential concepts of general relativity theory and gravitational waves with their modern applications to students and to researchers who are new to the multi-disciplinary field of gravitational wave astronomy. One of the advanced topics covered in this book is the fundamentals of gravitational wave data analysis, filling a gap in textbooks on general relativity. The topic blends smoothly with other chapters in the book not only because of the common area of research, but it uses similar differential geometric and algebraic tools that are used in general relativity

TitleMaking Sense of Statistical Mechanics
Author(s)Bricmont, Jean
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2022.
DescriptionX, 368 p. 28 illus., 12 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteMany people, including physicists, are confused about what the Second Law of thermodynamics really means, about how it relates to the arrow of time, and about whether it can be derived from classical mechanics. They also wonder what entropy really is: Is it all about information? But, if so, then, what is its relation to fluxes of heat? One might ask similar questions about probabilities: Do they express subjective judgments by us, humans, or do they reflect facts about the world, i.e. frequencies. And what notion of probability is used in the natural sciences, in particular statistical mechanics? This book addresses all of these questions in the clear and pedagogical style for which the author is known. Although valuable as accompaniment to an undergraduate course on statistical mechanics or thermodynamics, it is not a standard course book. Instead it addresses both the essentials and the many subtle questions that are usually brushed under the carpet in such courses. As one of the most lucid accounts of the above questions, it provides enlightening reading for all those seeking answers, including students, lecturers, researchers and philosophers of science

TitleSearch for the Higgs Boson Produced in Association with Top Quarks with the CMS Detector at the LHC
Author(s)Martin Perez, Cristina
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2022.
DescriptionXIII, 283 p. 170 illus., 158 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteIn this book, the interaction between the Higgs boson and the top quark is studied with the CMS detector at the LHC via the search for the associate production of the Higgs boson with one (tH) or two (ttH) top quarks. These processes are very rare and thus a high particle selection efficiency by the trigger system is essential. The selection of hadronically decaying tau leptons, expected from the Higgs boson decays, is tackled in the first part, where the trigger is optimized for Run 2 and Run 3 and a novel machine-learning based trigger for the High-Luminosity LHC is developed. The second part presents the analysis of tH and ttH where the Higgs boson decays into tau leptons, W or Z bosons with Run 2 data. The presence of multiple particles in the final state leads to the use of multivariant discriminants based on machine learning and the Matrix Element Method. The sophisticated methods used and the unprecedented amount of data result in the most precise cross section measurements to date

TitleA Search for Displaced Leptons in the ATLAS Detector
Author(s)Horyn, Lesya
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2022.
DescriptionXVI, 146 p. 75 illus., 68 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis thesis presents a search for long-lived particles decaying into displaced electrons and/or muons with large impact parameters. This signature provides unique sensitivity to the production of theoretical lepton-partners, sleptons. These particles are a feature of supersymmetric theories, which seek to address unanswered questions in nature. The signature searched for in this thesis is difficult to identify, and in fact, this is the first time it has been probed at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). It covers a long-standing gap in coverage of possible new physics signatures. This thesis describes the special reconstruction and identification algorithms used to select leptons with large impact parameters and the details of the background estimation. The results are consistent with background, so limits on slepton masses and lifetimes in this model are calculated at 95% CL, drastically improving on the previous best limits from the Large Electron Positron Collider (LEP)

TitlePassive Optical Resonators for Next-Generation Attosecond Metrology
Author(s)Pupeza, Ioachim
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2022.
DescriptionXII, 62 p. 28 illus., 27 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book introduces readers to the development of a new generation of high pulse-repetition frequency instruments for multi-dimensional attosecond-resolution photoelectron spectroscopy (attosecond PES). It investigates the power scaling of femtosecond enhancement cavities for efficient intracavity high-harmonics generation (HHG). Further, it derives and verifies advanced resonator designs that feature large illuminated spots on all mirrors, which mitigate both intensity- and thermally-induced enhancement limitations. The dynamics of a high-finesse, passive resonator in the presence of a highly nonlinear optical process such as HHG are quantitatively investigated, both theoretically and experimentally. These investigations are instrumental in achieving the holistic optimization of the XUV source reported on here, which for the first time reached intracavity HHG conversion efficiencies comparable to those achieved in single-pass setups with a similar gas target. Coupling out the XUV beam from the enhancement cavity by purely geometric means, employing both the fundamental and higher-order transverse Gaussian modes, is studied. This offers the advantages of robustness, low distortion to the participating pulses, and photon-energy scalability. Last but not least, the author provides a range of proof-of-principle attosecond angle-resolved PES experiments. The book gives an outlook on the possible future development of cavity-enhanced HHG and an extensive discussion on the generation of isolated XUV attosecond pulses via intracavity wavefront rotation

TitleTurbulence???an Odyssey : Origins and Evolution of a Research Field at the Interface of Science and Engineering
Author(s)Eckert, Michael
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2022.
DescriptionXVI, 208 p. 32 illus., 8 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteTurbulence is a research field where high expectations have met with recurrent frustration. It is a common perception among physicists, mathematicians and engineers that there is a "big mystery" behind the phenomenon of turbulence. Its history has also remained anything but well researched. Unlike topics such as quantum theory, which began to attract physics historians as long as fifty years ago, turbulence has - until now - received only little professional historical investigation. In this book, which complements his earlier SpringerBrief "The Turbulence Problem", the author sketches the history of turbulence from the vantage point of its roots (Part I), the basic concepts (Part II) and the formation of a scientific community that regarded turbulence as a research field in its own right (Part III). From this perspective turbulence research appears to undertake an odyssey through uncharted territories. The book follows this development up until a conference in Marseille in the year 1961, which marked the inauguration of turbulence in the words of its organizer as ???a new science???. The epilogue contains some observations about turbulence research since 1961. This book provides a rich source of information for all those interested in the history of this major field of basic and applied science
