TitleReading the Mind of God : Johannes Kepler and the Reform of Astronomy
Author(s)Davis, A.E.L;Field, J. V;Mahoney, T. J
PublicationDordrecht, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer Netherlands, 2024.
DescriptionXXIX, 405 p. 109 illus., 27 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis volume provides a wide-ranging introduction to Kepler???s work, with essays on his religion, his cosmological theories, his work in astronomy, astrology, optics and mathematics and his interactions with Tycho Brahe and Galileo Galilei. Kepler is a major figure in the history of science. His laws of planetary motion overthrew a tradition, going back as far as the ancient Greeks, of constructing the paths of planets by combinations of circles; and the derivation of the laws was revolutionary in the way it relied upon detailed agreement with observations. Moreover, the laws explicitly relate the motion and path of each planet to the Sun. Thus, when the tables that Kepler based upon the laws proved to be highly reliable over many decades, this played a crucial part in making heliocentrism acceptable. And many years after Kepler???s death the laws themselves played an important part in Newton???s derivation of the inverse square law of gravitation in his Principia (1687). In this respect, Kepler can look ???modern???. But his work is grounded in his religious belief that the Universe is the visible expression of the nature of the God who created it. This book, whose chapters are written by leading scholars, is primarily addressed to undergraduate and graduate students of science and the history of science but will also appeal to the general reader with an interest in the history of science

TitleFunctional Magnetic and Spintronic Nanomaterials
Author(s)Vladymyrskyi, Igor;Hillebrands, Burkard;Serha, Alexander;Makarov, Denys;Prokopenko, Oleksandr
PublicationDordrecht, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer Netherlands, 2024.
DescriptionXI, 222 p. 58 illus., 56 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteMacroscopic objects made of magnetic materials have been known to mankind for several thousand years and are widely used in various fields of human activity. With the development and practical implementation of microelectronics, and more recently nanoelectronics, it has become possible to develop and manufacture magnetic nanomaterials, dramatically expanding the scope of magnetics in modern technologies. Today, magnetic nanomaterials and nanostructures are key components of advanced information technologies. They are widely used in eMobility, medicine, sensors, robotics, etc., and have significant potential for application in prospective smart wearables and human-machine interfaces. This volume outlines recent research in the field of functional magnetic and spintronic materials. Each of the 10 chapters in the volume is self-contained, allowing the topics to be explored independently of the material in other chapters. The book covers the entire ???life cycle??? of magnetic/spintronic nanomaterials: from theoretical and numerical studies of their properties (Ch. 1), fabrication and experimental study of film systems (Ch. 2), fabrication of nanostructures (Ch. 3), study of electromagnetic phenomena occurring in such nanostructures (Chs. 4-10), to the use of these nanostructures in new technologies, particularly in spintronic energy harvesting (Ch. 9) and quantum sensing (Ch. 10). Some of the contributions to this volume were presented as lectures and reports at the Advanced Research Workshop ???Functional Spintronic Nanomaterials for Radiation Detection and Energy Harvesting??? (25???27 September 2023, Kyiv, Ukraine), which was supported by the NATO Science for Peace and Security Programme

TitleQuantum Field Theory : By Academician Prof. Kazuhiko Nishijima - A Classic in Theoretical Physics
Author(s)Nishijima, Kazuhiko;Chaichian, Masud;Tureanu, Anca
PublicationDordrecht, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer Netherlands, 2023.
DescriptionXVI, 572 p. 46 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book is a translation of the 8th edition of Prof. Kazuhiko Nishijima???s classical textbook on quantum field theory. It is based on the lectures the Author gave to students and researchers with diverse interests over several years in Japan. The book includes both the historical development of QFT and its practical use in theoretical and experimental particle physics, presented in a pedagogical and transparent way and, in several parts, in a unique and original manner. The Author, Academician Nishijima, is the inventor (independently from Murray Gell-Mann) of the third (besides the electric charge and isospin) quantum number in particle physics: strangeness. He is also most known for his works on several other theories describing particles such as electron and muon neutrinos, and his work on the so-called Gell-Mann???Nishijima formula. The present English translation from its 8th Japanese edition has been initiated and taken care of by theeditors Prof. M. Chaichian and Dr. A. Tureanu from the University of Helsinki, who were close collaborators of Prof. Nishijima. Dr. Yuki Sato, a researcher in particle physics at the University of Nagoya, most kindly accepted to undertake the heavy task of translation. The translation of the book can be regarded as a tribute to Prof. Nishijima's memory, for his fundamental contributions to particle physics and quantum field theory. The book presents with utmost clarity and originality the most important topics and applications of QFT which by now constitute the established core of the theory. It is intended for a wide circle of graduate and post-graduate students, as well as researchers in theoretical and particle physics. In addition, the book can be a useful source as a basic material or supplementary literature for lecturers giving a course on quantum field theory

TitleLight-Matter Interactions Towards the Nanoscale
Author(s)Cesaria, Maura;Cal?? Lesina, Antonio;Collins, John
PublicationDordrecht, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer Netherlands, 2022.
DescriptionXV, 364 p. 1 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThe investigation of light-matter interactions in materials, especially those on the nanoscale, represents perhaps the most promising avenue for scientific progress in the fields of photonics and plasmonics. This book examines a variety of topics, starting from fundamental principles, leading to the current state of the art research. For example, this volume includes a chapter on the sensing of biological molecules with optical resonators (microspheres) combined with plasmonic systems, where the response this system are described in a fundamental and elegant manner using coupled mode theory. Symmetry plays a major role in the book. One chapter on time reversal symmetry in electromagnetic theory describes how to control the properties of light (e.g. scattering and directionality of the flow of light) in materials with certain topological invariants. Another chapter where symmetry is prominent reformulates, using a gentle and pedagogical approach, Maxwell???s Equations into a new set of fields that reveal a ???handedness??? symmetry in electromagnetic theory, which can be applied to photonic systems in, for example, the sensing of chiral molecules and understanding the conditions for zero reflection. Also, for students and researchers starting in the field of nanoplasmonics, the book includes a tutorial on the finite element time domain simulation of nanoplasmonic systems. Other topics include photonic systems for quantum computing, nanoplasmonics, and optical properties of nano and bulk materials. The authors take a pedagogical approach to their topic, making the book an excellent reference for graduate students and scientists starting in the fields of photonics or plasmonics

TitleTerahertz (THz), Mid Infrared (MIR) and Near Infrared (NIR) Technologies for Protection of Critical Infrastructures Against Explosives and CBRN
Author(s)Pereira, Mauro Fernandes;Apostolakis, Apostolos
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2021.
DescriptionXV, 285 p. 143 illus., 105 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteCritical infrastructures are targets for terrorism and deliver a valuable vector through which the proliferation of CBRN and explosive precursors can be detected. Recent technological breakthroughs, notably in the field of near infrared (NIR), mid infrared (MIR), Terahertz (THz) and Gigahertz (GHz) sources and detectors, have led to rugged commercial devices, capable of standoff sensing a range of these dangerous substances. However, at the same time criminal and terrorist organizations have also benefited from the availability of technologies to increase the threat they pose to the security of citizens and a concerted effort is needed to improve early detection measures to identify activities, such as the production of homemade explosives or CBRN that can be potentially dangerous to society. The key global technological bottleneck to be overcome is the current lack of integration and networking of mature detection technology into early warning systems for critical infrastructures. Thus, this book brings together complementary information connecting the research of leading teams working on critical Infrastructure protection with academic developers and industrial producers of state of the art sensors.

TitleModelling Protocells : The Emergent Synchronization of Reproduction and Molecular Replication
Author(s)Serra, Roberto;Villani, Marco
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2017.
DescriptionXV, 182 p. 46 illus., 33 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThe monograph discusses models of synthetic protocells, which are cell-like structures obtained from non-living matter endowed with some rudimentary kind of metabolism and genetics, but much simpler than biological cells. They should grow and proliferate, generating offsprings that resemble in some way the parent protocells with some variation, so that selection may take place. Sustainable protocell populations have not yet been obtained experimentally and mathematical models are therefore extremely important to address key questions concerning their synthesis and behavior. Different protocell ???architectures??? have been proposed and high-level abstract models like those that are presented in this book are particularly relevant to gain a better understanding of the different properites. These models are able to treat all the major dynamical phenomena in a unified framework, so they can be seen as ???virtual laboratories??? for protocell research. Particular attention is paid to the problem of synchronization of the fission rate of the whole protocell and the duplication rate of its "protogenetic" material, which is shown to be an emergent property that spontaneously develops in successive generations. The book is of interest for a broad range of scientists working in soft matter physics, chemistry and biology, interested in the role protocells may play on the development of new technologies with medical, environmental and industrial applications as well as scientists interested in the origin of life
