Title | Unbounded Non-Commutative Integration |
Author(s) | Jurzak, J.P |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1985. |
Description | XX, 191 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Non-commutative integration has its origin in the classical papers of Murray and von Neumann on rings of operators, and was introduced because of unsolved problems in unitary group representations and the elucidation of various aspects of quantum-mechanical formalism, together with formal calculus in such operator rings. These papers emphasized the interest in 1I -factors and pOinted out the remarkable behavior and 1 algebraic structure of the set of all unbounded closed operators a. ffiliated to such rings. The absence of power tools in functional analysis - mainly settled in their definitive form by A. Grothendieck around 1950-195- together with the pathological manipulation of algebraic operations on closed operators in Hilbert spaces, has limited ring-theory to the study of algebras of bounded operators with the main objective the difficult question of classifica?? tion up to isomorphisms of factors. This material has permitted a rigorous study of discrete systems in statistical mechanics but appears to be less convincing in other domains of physics (in the algebraic approach to field theory, for example). The striking role of Hamiltonians, Schrodinger operators and Lie group invariant properties in such areas of physics disappears in the so?? called C*-approach |

Title | Excited States in Quantum Chemistry : Theoretical and Experimental Aspects of the Electronic Structure and Properties of the Excited States in Atoms, Molecules and Solids |
Author(s) | Nicolaides, Cleanthes A;Beck, D.R |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1979. |
Description | 585 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | ??It is undoubtedly true that much of the progress in the quant~m theory of matter is due to the remarkable success of the independent particle model (IPM)--especially in describing ground states. However, the accurate experimental results of the last 10 years or so, on a variety of spectroscopic phenomena and chemical processes which involve the Excited State, and the related failure of the IPM to reproduce accurately--in many cases, even qualitatively--the observed data, have sent to theorists a clear message: There is need to create and/or apply general and useful approaches to the many-electron problem of the excited state which go beyond the IPM, treat electron correlation and relativity and explain or predict all relevant physical or chemical information with consistent accuracy. This book contains articles devoted mainly to some of the most important new developments in Quantum Chemistry concerning the theoretical foundations and the computational implementation of many-body approaches to the quantitative and detailed under?? standing of the electronic excited states of atoms, molecules and solids. Furthermore, it contains experimental and pheno?? menological articles on Photoelectron and Auger spectroscopy, Lifetime measurements and Organic Photochemistry. In combination or individually, these articles constitute a good description of some current theoretical and experimental work on the electronic structure and spectroscopy of atoms, molecules, polymers, surfaces, metal oxides and amorphous solids |

Title | Atmospheres of Earth and the Planets : Proceedings of the Summer Advanced Study Institute, Held at the University of Li??ge, Belgium, July 29???August 9, 1974 |
Author(s) | McCormac, Billy |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1975. |
Description | 461 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book contains the lectures presented at the Summer Advanced Study Institute, 'Physics and Chemistry of Atmospheres' which was held at the University of Liege, Belgium, during the period July 29-August 9, 1974. One-hundred nineteen persons from eleven different countries attended the Institute. The authors and publisher have made a special effort for rapid publication of an up?? to-date status of the physics and chemistry ofthe atmospheres of Earth and the plan?? ets, which is an ever-changing area. Special thanks are due to the lecturers for their diligent preparation and excellent presentations. The individual lectures and the published papers were deliberately limited; the authors' cooperation in conforming to these specifications is greatly appreciated. The contents of the book are organized by subject area rather than in the order in which papers were presented during the Institute. Many thanks are due to Drs Alv Egeland, Donald M. Hunten, Gunther Lange-Hesse, Marcel Nicolet, Harold I. Schiff, Lance Thomas, Alister Vallance Jones, Richard Wayne, and Gilbert Weill who served as session chairmen during the Institute and contributed greatly to its success by skillfully directing the discussion period in a stimulating manner after each lecture. Many persons contributed to the success of the Institute. Drs Alv Egeland, Donald M. Hunten, Gunther Lange-Hesse, Marcel Nicolet, Harold I. Schiff, Erwin R. Schmerling, Lance Thomas, Alister Vallance Jones, Richard Wayne, and Gilbert Weill were especially helpful in preparing the technical program |

Description | XXV, 405 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | E. KONTIZAS Astronomical Institute National Observatory of Athens P. O. Box 20048 Athens GR-1181O GREECE The international conference on "Wide-Field Spectroscopy" and its sub?? ject matter were agreed during the general assembly of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in August 1994 by the Working Group of Com?? mision 9 "Wi de-Field Imaging". This meeting gave an opportunity to world experts on this subject to gather in Athens, in order to discuss the cur?? rent exploitation and the impending opportunities that exist in the area of multi-object spectroscopy, with particular emphasis on: 1. Astronomical instruments, data acquisition, processing and analysis techniques. 2. Astrophysical problems best tackled through wide-field, multi-object spectroscopy. The new fibre optic technology offers an important tool for the advancement of basic research and the development of industrial applications. Astronom?? ical spectroscopy is a field of astronomy which has contributed much to the advancement of fundamental physics. The spectra of hot stars have been used to determine the well-known Balmer formula for the wavelength of hydrogen lines, in the late 19th century. Since then, spectroscopy has made enormous progress in stellar atmosphere studies, in kinematics, and in the detection of high redshifts in the Universe. The traditional techniques of obtaining wide-field spectroscopic data are based on slitless spectroscopy (objective prism). Several observations, world wide, make use ofthese tech?? niques in order to obtain information on the spectral properties of objects in large areas of the sky |

Title | Advances in Turbulence VII : Proceedings of the Seventh European Turbulence Conference, held in Saint-Jean Cap Ferrat, France, 30 June ??? 3 July 1998 / Actes de la Septi??me Conf??rence Europ??enne de Turbulence, tenue ?? Saint-Jean Cap Ferrat, France, 30 Juin ??? 3 Juillet 1998 |
Author(s) | Frisch, Uriel |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1998. |
Description | XXI, 613 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Advances in Turbulence VII contains an overview of the state of turbulence research with some bias towards work done in Europe. It represents an almost complete collection of the invited and contributed papers delivered at the Seventh European Turbulence Conference, sponsored by EUROMECH and ERCOFTAC and organized by the Observatoire de la C??te d'Azur. New high-Reynolds number experiments combined with new techniques of imaging, non-intrusive probing, processing and simulation provide high-quality data which put significant constraints on possible theories. For the first time, it has been shown, for a class of passive scalar problems, why dimensional analysis sometimes gives the wrong answers and how anomalous intermittency corrections can be calculated from first principles. The volume is thus geared towards specialists in the area of flow turbulence who could not attend the conference as well as anybody interested in this rapidly moving field |

Title | Electrically Induced Vortical Flows |
Author(s) | Bojarevi??s, V;Freibergs, Ya;Shilova, E.I;Shcherbinin, ??.V |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1989. |
Description | 400 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Every scientific subject probably conceals unexplored or little investigated strata, which may show up at the proper time when favourable conditions coincide (practical demands, a circle of scientists prepared to recognize the novelty and capable of giving impetus to the development of a new theory, etc.). Something like this occurred in early seventies for magnetohydrodynamics, which at the time was considered to be a relatively complete branch of hydro?? dynamics with no apparent broad, unexplored areas. It was unexpectedly realized that, in addition to the traditional methods of affecting an electrically conducting medium, there is yet another way, one which subsequently lead to a new direction in magnetohydrodynamics. In the Soviet scientific literature this direction has been termed 'electrically induced vortex flows', the essence of which are hydrodynamic effects due to the interaction of an electric current passing through the fluid with its own magnetic field. It cannot be said that this direction was created ex nihilo: individual studies related to the flows driven in a current-carrying medium in the absence of external magnetic fields appeared in the sixties; in the thirties the flows them?? selves were known to take place within electrical arcs; and yet the first observa?? tions on the behaviour of liquid current-carrying conductors were made at the beginning of this century |

Title | Barriers and Challenges in Computational Fluid Dynamics |
Author(s) | Venkatakrishnan, V;Salas, Manuel D;Chakravarthy, Sukumar R |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1998. |
Description | X, 395 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | In this volume, designed for engineers and scientists working in the area of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), experts offer assessments of the capabilities of CFD, highlight some fundamental issues and barriers, and propose novel approaches to overcome these problems. They also offer new avenues for research in traditional and non-traditional disciplines. The scope of the papers ranges from the scholarly to the practical. This book is distinguished from earlier surveys by its emphasis on the problems facing CFD and by its focus on non-traditional applications of CFD techniques. There have been several significant developments in CFD since the last workshop held in 1990 and this book brings together the key developments in a single unified volume |
