TitleModern Magnetic and Spintronic Materials : Properties and Applications
Author(s)Kaidatzis, Andreas;Sidorenko, Serhii;Vladymyrskyi, Igor;Niarchos, Dimitrios
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2020.
DescriptionXII, 162 p. 101 illus., 83 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteMagnetic and spintronic materials are ubiquitous in modern technological applications, e.g. in electric motors, power generators, sensors and actuators, not to mention information storage and processing. Medical technology has also greatly benefited from magnetic materials ??? especially magnetic nanoparticles ??? for therapy and diagnostics methods. All of the above-mentioned applications rely on the properties of the materials used. These properties in turn depend on intrinsic and extrinsic material parameters. The former are related to the actual elements used and their properties, e.g. atomic magnetic moment and exchange interaction between atoms; the latter are related to the structural and microstructural properties of the materials used, e.g. their crystal structure, grain size, and grain boundary phases. Focusing on state-of-the-art magnetic and spintronic materials, this book will introduce readers to a range of related topics in Physics and Materials Science. Phenomena and processes at the nanoscale

TitleThe Evolution of Galaxies : III ??? From Simple Approaches to Self-Consistent Models
Author(s)Hensler, G;Stasinska, G;Harfst, S;Kroupa, P;Theis, C
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2003.
DescriptionXII, 686 p : online resource
Abstract NoteGalaxies have a history. This has become clear from recent sky surveys which have shown that distant galaxies, formed early in the life of the Universe, differ from the nearby ones. New observational windows at ultraviolet, infrared and millimetric wavelengths (provided by ROSAT, IRAM, IUE, IRAS, ISO) have revealed that galaxies contain a wealth of components: very hot gas, atomic hydrogen, molecules, dust, dark matter... A significant advance is expected from the results of new instruments (VLT, FIRST, XMM) which will allow one to explore the most distant Universe. Three Euroconferences were planned to punctuate this new epoch in galactic research, bringing together specialists in various fields of Astronomy. This book contains the proceedings of the third conference and presents the actual state-of-the-art of modelling galaxy evolution

TitleIUTAM Symposium on Diffraction and Scattering in Fluid Mechanics and Elasticity : Proceeding of the IUTAM Symposium held in Manchester, United Kingdom, 16???20 July 2000
Author(s)Abrahams, I. David;Martin, Paul A;Simon, Michael J
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2002.
DescriptionXIV, 353 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThese Conference Proceedings are intended to summarise the latest developments in diffraction and scattering theory as reported at the IU?? TAM Symposium on Diffraction and Scattering in Fluid Mechanics and Elasticity held in Manchester, England on 16-20 July 2000. This in?? formal meeting was organised to discuss mathematical advances, both from the theoretical and more applied points of view. However, its pri?? mary goal was to bring together groups of researchers working in dis?? parate application areas, but who nevertheless share common models, phenomenological features arising in such problems, and common math?? ematical tools. To this end, we were delighted to have four Plenary Speakers, Professors Allan Pierce, Ed Kerschen, Roger Grimshaw and John Willis FRS, who are undisputed leaders in the four thematic ar?? eas of our meeting (these are respectively acoustics, aeroacoustics, water or other free surface waves, elasticity). These Proceedings should offer an excellent vehicle for continuing the dialogue between these groups of researchers. The participants were invited because of their expertise and recent contributions to this field. Collectively, there were around 90 contrib?? utors to the Symposium from some 13 countries located all around the world. These included 45 speakers, 35 co-authors and about 10 other delegates. Individuals came from many of the major international cen?? tres of excellence in the field of scattering theory

TitleLarge Scale Structure Formation
Author(s)Mansouri, Reza;Brandenberger, Robert
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2000.
DescriptionV, 382 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe modern Persian word for cosmology is "Keyhan-shenakht", which is also the title of a Persian book written more than 800 years ago. The same term can also be found in Old Persian. In spite of this old tradition, modern cosmology is a new~omer within the scientific disciplines in Iran. The cosmology community' is small and not yet well established. Given the spectacular recent advances in observational and theoretical cosmology, the large amount of new observational data which will become available in the near future, and the rapid expansion of the international cosmology community, it was realized that Iran should play a more active role in the exciting human endeavour which cosmology constitutes. This was the main motivation to establish a School on Cosmology in Iran. The plan is to hold a cosmology school every three years somewhere in Iran. The focus of this First School on Cosmology was chosen to be structure formation, a rapidly evolving cornerstone of modern cosmology. The topics of the school were selected in order to give both a broad overview of the current status of cosmological structure formation, and an in-depth dis?? cussion of the key issues theory of cosmological perturbations and analysis of cosmic microwave anisotropies. The lectures by Blanchard and Sarkar give an overview of homogeneous cosmological models and standard big bang cosmology. In his contribution, Padmanabhan presents a comprehen?? sive discussion of the growth of cosmological perturbations

TitleInformation Handling in Astronomy
Author(s)Heck, Andre
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2000.
DescriptionX, 242 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe pilot boat just moved away and'its lights are already fading towards the coast of Northeastern Queensland over which Saturn is going to set. There is still quite some time to go before dawn. The big ship has now regained her cruise speed following its roughly northwesterly route in the South Coral Sea along the chain of nearby reefs. Few people are around at this time, except a dozen early birds sharing some 'shipshaping' exercise on the top deck and taking advantage of the relative coolness of the night. On my way down to the stateroom, I cannot but stop once more in front of that elegant composition by British artist Brigid Collins (1963-) hanging in the monumental staircase between Decks 7 and 8. That piece 2 of art, a 1.8x 1.8m oil on canvas plus collage entitled Berinl in honour of the Danish explorer, gathers together many navigation-related themes of the time: Suns, Moons, planets, sky maps, astrolabes, small telescopes, as well as drawings, diagrams and charts of all kinds. It is somehow a digest of how astronomical information was then collected, made available, and used

TitleThe First Decadal Review of the Edgeworth-Kuiper Belt
Author(s)Davies, John K;Barrera, Luis H
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2004.
DescriptionXII, 498 p. 42 illus., 1 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteA decade after the confirmation of the Kuiper Belt's existence, 80 of the world's experts gathered in Chile to review what has been learned since 1992. This record of the meeting is enhanced by several specially solicited papers covering additional material not presented at the conference. The volume includes papers on the dynamics of the trans-Neptunian region, the results of deep surveys for the new objects and the evidence for an outer Edge to the Edgeworth-Kuiper belt. Physical observations of many objects are described and attempts are made to bring these data into some coherent picture of the distant solar system. The interior physics of these distant, icy objects, and the link between the Kuiper Belt and dust disks around other stars are also considered. Of particular interest is a set of papers on how the surfaces of distant asteroids are affected by various types of radiation, an area crucial to the interpretation of data being collected by large ground based telescopes. Suitable for professional astronomers and PhD students working in the field of planetary science

TitleIUTAM Symposium on Developments in Geophysical Turbulence
Author(s)Kerr, Robert M;Kimura, Yoshifumi
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2000.
DescriptionVII, 297 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis symposium continues a long tradition for IUGGjIUTAM symposia going back to "Fundamental Problems in Thrbulence and their Relation to Geophysics" Marseille, 1961. The five topics that were emphasized were: turbulence modeling, statistics of small scales and coherent structures, con?? vective turbulence, stratified turbulence, and historical developments. The objective was to consider the ubiquitous nature of turbulence in a variety of geophysical problems and related flows. Some history of the contribu?? tions of NCAR and its alumni were discussed, including those of Jackson R Herring, who has been a central figure at NCAR since 1972. To the original topics we added rotation, which appeared in many places. This includes rotating stratified turbulence, rotating convective turbulence, horizontal rotation that appears in flows over terrain and the role of small?? scale vorticity in many flows. These complicated flows have recently begun to be simulated by several groups from around the world and this meeting provided them with an excellent forum for exchanging results, plus inter?? actions with those doing more fundamental work on rotating stratified and convective flows. New work on double diffusive convection was given in two presentations. The history of Large Eddy Simulations was presented and several new approaches to this field were given. This meeting also spawned some interesting interactions between observational side and how to inter?? pret the observations with modeling and simulations around the theme of particle dispersion in these flows

TitleOrganizations and Strategies in Astronomy : Volume II
Author(s)Heck, Andre
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2001.
DescriptionIX, 280 p : online resource
Abstract NoteSeated in a sun-lit corner of his 17th century Dutch house, his hand touching a celestial globe, Johannes Vermeer's "Astronomer" seems to pon?? der about the mysteries of the universe. We might make the trip to Paris and ask him, in the Louvre, what precisely is on his mind. Unfortunately, there will be no answer. But we do know what his mind was not on. It was not on the approaching deadlines for the proposals he would have to write for getting funds and telescope-time, not on the meeting of the observing programs committee, not on his refereeing duty for the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics, nor on his university's tightening budget for science. In the Kapteyn Institute at Groningen I stand face to face with the im?? pressive portrait of J.C. Kapteyn, painted in the year 1918. Seated at his desk he is doing his calculations with pen, pencil and tables, perhaps check?? ing the work of his skilled staff of human computers. Early in his career he had completed his magnum opus, the Cape Photographic Durchmusterung in collaboration with his close friend David Gill at Capetown, South Africa

TitleOrganizations and Strategies in Astronomy : Volume 4
Author(s)Heck, Andre
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2003.
DescriptionXII, 330 p : online resource
Abstract NoteI am most grateful to Andr?? e Heck for his invitation to write a foreword to OSA Volume 4 ??? I will use this valued opportunity to emphasise those topics in Vol. 4 which I consider important even if other topics may be of even greater importance in the universal scale of things. At the outset let me say that I commend Vol. 4 to its readers ??? it contains much of very great interest for organisations and strategies in astronomy. A topic which I consider to be of very great importance at this time is Adverse Environmental Impact on Astronomy. There are two papers on this topic in OSA 4 ??? Cohen on Strategies for Protecting Radio Ast- nomy and Schwarz on Light Pollution Control. The growth in the extent of use, the power and spectral demand for radio transmission continues to increase virtually exponentially. The impact on the ???listening??? services such as radio astronomy has been severe. Only by creativity in developing new techniques for radio noise (including legal transmissions) reduction and by participating fully in the allocation process for radio frequencies has radio astronomy developed to the powerful investigative tool it is today
