Description | VI, 454 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This volume contains the written versions of lectures held at the "23. Internationale Universit~tswochen fUr Kernphysik" in Schladming, Austria, in February 1984. Once again the generous support of our sponsors, the Austrian Ministry of Science and Research, the Styrian Government and others, had made it possible to organize this school. The aim of the topics chosen for the meeting was to present different aspects of stochastic methods and techniques. These methods have opened up new ways to attack problems in a broad field ranging from quantum mechanics to quantum field theory. Thanks to the efforts of the lecturers it was possible to take this development into account and show relations to areas where stochastic methods have been used for a long time. Due to limited space only short manuscript versions of the many seminars presented could be included. The lecture notes were reexamined by the authors after the school and are now published in their final form. It is a pleasure to thank all the lecturers for their efforts which made it possible to speed up publication. Thanks are also due to Mrs. Neuhold for her careful typing of the notes. H. Mitter L. Title | Continuum Mechanics in Environmental Sciences and Geophysics |
Author(s) | Hutter, K |
Publication | Vienna, Springer Vienna, 1993. |
Description | XIII, 522 p. 67 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | Modern continuum mechanics is the topic of this book. After its introduction it will be applied to a few typical systems arising in the environmental sciences and in geophysics. In large lake/ocean dynamics peculiar effects of the rotation of the Earth will be analyzed in linear/nonlinear processes of a homogenous and inhomogenous water body. Strong thermomechanical coupling paired with nonlinear rheology affects the flow of large ice sheets (such as Antarctica and Greenland) and ice shelves. Its response to the climatic forcing in an environmental of greenhouse warming may significantly affect the life of future generations. The mechanical behavior of granular materials under quasistatic loadings requires non-classical mixture concepts and encounters generally complicated elastic-plastic-type constitutive behavior. Creeping flow of soils, consolidation processes and ground water flow are described by such theories. Rapid shearing flow of granular materials lead to constitutive relations for the stresses which incorporate rate independent behavior of Mohr-Coulomb type together with dispersive stress contributions due to particle collisions. Rockfalls, sturzstroms, snow and ice avalanches, but also debris flow and sea ice drifting can be described with such formulations |

Title | Proceedings of the First International Symposium on Basic Environmental Problems of Man in Space : Paris, 29 October ??? 2 November 1962 |
Author(s) | Bjurstedt, Hilding |
Publication | Vienna, Springer Vienna, 1965. |
Description | VIII, 508 p. 97 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | This volume contains the communications and discussions of the First Inter?? national Symposium on Basic Environmental Problems of Man in Space, which was held 29 October - 2 November 1962 at Unesco House, Paris, under the joint sponsorship of the International Astronautical Federation (IAF) and the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) with the cooperation and support of Unesco, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the World Health Organization (WHO). At this Symposium 31 communications were presented, 8 of which were from the USSR, 8 from the USA, and 15 from other countries, all by special invitation. The presentations, which included three general review papers, were made in ten half-day working sessions by a distinguished international group. The pro?? ceedings were not restricted to the acute professional aspects of man in space. In fact, the majority of the vast store of material contained in this volume deals with the more scientific aspects, i. e. with problems of the future, which are con?? tributed mainly by conventional areas of physiology and psychophysiology, including the technical research activities pertaining to the acquisition, analysis and control of biomedical data |

Title | Few-Body Problems in Physics ???98 : Proceedings of the 16th European Conference on Few-Body Problems in Physics, Autrans, France, June 1???6, 1998 |
Author(s) | Desplanques, Bertrand;Protasov, Konstantin;Silvestre-Brac, Bernard;Carbonell, Jaume |
Publication | Vienna, Springer Vienna, 1999. |
Description | XVIII, 548 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The sixteenth European Conference on Few Body Problems in Physics has taken place from June 1 to June 6, 1998, in Autrans, a little village in the mountains, close to Grenoble. The Conference follows those organized in Peniscola (1995), Amsterdam (1993), Elba (1991), Uzhgorod (1990) ... The present one has been organized by a group of physicists working in different fields at the University Joseph Fourier of Grenoble who find in this occasion a good opportunity to join their efforts. The core of the organizing committee was nevertheless located at the Institut des Sciences Nucleaires, whose physicists, especially in the group of theoretical physics, have a long tradition in the domain. The Few Body Conference has a natural tendency to be a theoretical one - the exchange about the methods used in different fields is the common point to most participants. It also has a tendency to be a hadronic physics one - the corresponding physics community, perhaps due to the existence of experimen?? tal facilities devoted to the study of few body systems, is better organized. In preparing the scientific program, we largely relied on the advices of the Inter?? national Advisory Committee, while avoiding to follow these trends too closely |
