Title | Particle Accelerators: From Big Bang Physics to Hadron Therapy |
Author(s) | Amaldi, Ugo |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2015. |
Description | XVII, 284 p. 145 illus., 28 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | Rather than focusing on the contributions of theoretical physicists to the understanding of the subatomic world and of the beginning of the universe - as most popular science books on particle physics do - this book is different in that, firstly, the main focus is on machine inventors and builders and, secondly, particle accelerators are not only described as discovery tools but also for their contributions to tumour diagnosis and therapy. The characters of well-known (e.g. Ernest Lawrence) and mostly unknown actors (e.g. Nicholas Christofilos) are outlined, including many colourful quotations. The overall picture supports the author???s motto: ???Physics is beautiful and useful???. ?? Advance appraisal: ???Accelerators go all the way from the unique and gargantuan Large Hadron Collider to thousands of smaller versions in hospitals and industry. Ugo Amaldi has experience across the range. He has worked at CERN and has for many years been driving the application of accelerators in medicine. This is a must-read introduction to this frontier of modern technology, written beautifully by a world expert.??? Frank Close, Professor of Physics at Oxford University author of "The Infinity Puzzle" ???This book should be read by school teachers and all those interested in the exploration of the microcosm and its relation to cosmology, and in the use of accelerators for medical applications. With a light hand and without formulae the author easily explains complicated matters, spicing up the text with amusing historical anecdotes. His reputation as an outstanding scientist in all the fields treated guarantees high standards.??? Herwig Schopper, former CERN Director General?? author of "LEP - The Lord of the Collider Rings at CERN" ???This book tells the story of modern physics with an unusual emphasis on the machine-builders who made it all possible, and their machines.?? Learning to accelerate?? particles has enabled physicists to probe the subatomic world and gain a deeper understanding of the cosmos.?? It has also brought numerous benefits to medicine, from the primitive X-ray machines of over a century ago to today's developments in hadron therapy for cancer.?? Amaldi tells this story in a most fascinating way.??? Edward Witten, Professor of ??Mathematical Physics at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton;??Fields Medal (1990) |

Title | Medical Image Processing : Techniques and Applications |
Author(s) | Dougherty, Geoff |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 2011. |
Description | XVI, 380 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The field of medical imaging advances so rapidly that all of those working in it, scientists, engineers, physicians, educators and others, need to frequently update their knowledge in order to stay abreast of developments. While journals and periodicals play a crucial role in this, more extensive, integrative publications that connect fundamental principles and new advances in algorithms and techniques to practical applications are essential. Medical Image Processing: Techniques and Applications meets this challenge and provides an enduring bridge in the ever expanding field of medical imaging. It serves as an authoritative resource and self-study guide explaining sophisticated techniques of quantitative image analysis, with a focus on medical applications. The book emphasizes the conceptual framework of image analysis and the effective use of image processing tools. It presents a detailed approach to each application while emphasizing insight and ???tricks of the trade???, and the applicability of techniques to other research areas. Although each chapter is written by an expert (or experts) in that area and is essentially self-contained, fundamental connections between the different topics are emphasized so that the book forms an integrated whole. The book is designed for end users who wish to update their skills and understanding with the latest techniques in image analysis. Providing unprecedented breadth and detail, it will be a valuable cross-disciplinary resource both at the graduate and specialist level. It is also well suited ??to supplement and motivate learning in graduate-level image processing classes within biomedical engineering, radiology and computer science |

Title | The Phantoms of Medical and Health Physics : Devices for Research and Development |
Author(s) | DeWerd, Larry A;Kissick, Michael |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 2014. |
Description | XII, 286 p. 114 illus., 62 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | A??comprehensive overview of all types of phantoms used in medical imaging, therapy, nuclear medicine and health physics is provided in this title. For ionizing radiation, dosimetry with respect to issues of material composition, shape, and motion/position effects are all highlighted. For medical imaging, each type of technology will need specific materials and designs, and the physics and indications will be explored for each type. Health physics phantoms are concerned with some of the same issues such as material heterogeneity, but also unique issues such as organ-specific radiation dose from sources distributed in other organs. Though some of the information enclosed is found in other sources, divided especially along the three categories of imaging, therapy, and health physics, many medical physicists as well as professionals need to bridge these three catagories. Readers will be able to use this book to select the appropriate phantom from a vendor at a clinic, to learn from as a student, to choose materials for custom phantom design, to design dynamic features, and as a reference for a variety of applications |

Title | Principles of Lasers |
Author(s) | Svelto, Orazio;Hanna, D. C |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1976. |
Description | XI, 376 p. 10 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book is the result of more than ten years of research and teaching in the field of quantum electronics. The purpose of the book is to introduce the principles of lasers, starting from elementary notions of quantum mechanics and electromagnetism. Because it is an introductory book, an effort has been made to make it self?? contained to minimize the need for reference to other works. For the same reason; the references have been limited (whenever possible) either to review papers or to papers of seminal importance. The organization of the book is based on the fact that a laser can be thought of as consisting of three elements: (i) an active material, (ii) a pumping system, and (iii) a suitable resonator. Ac?? cordingly, after an introductory chapter, the next three chapters deal, respectively, with the interaction of radiation with matter, pumping processes, and the theory of passive optical resonators |

Title | Diffuse Waves in Complex Media |
Author(s) | Fouque, Jean-Pierre |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1999. |
Description | XI, 459 p. 41 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | The NATO Advanced Study Institute on Diffuse Waves in Complex Media was held at the "Centre de Physique des Houches" in France from March 17 to 27, 1998. The Schools' scientific content, wave propagation in heterogeneous me?? dia, has covered many areas of fundamental and applied research. On the one hand, the understanding of wave propagation has considerably improved during the last thirty years. New developments and concepts such as, speckle correlations, weak and strong localization, time reversal, near-field propagation are under active research. On the other hand, wave propagation in random media is now being investigated in many different fields such as applied mathematics, acoustics, optics, atomic physics, geo?? physics or medical sciences. Each community often uses its own langage to describe the same phenomena. The aim of the School was to gather worldwide specialists to illuminate various aspects of wave propagation in random media. This volume presents fourteen expository articles corresponding to courses and seminars given during the School. They are arranged as follows. The first three articles deal with the phenomena of localization of waves: B. van Tiggelen (p. 1) gives a critical review of the physics of localization, J. Lacroix (p. 61) presents the mathematical theory and A. Klein (p. 73) describes recent results for randomized periodic media |

Title | Acoustical Imaging : Volume 15 |
Author(s) | Jones, Hugh W |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1987. |
Description | XI, 692 p. 509 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | Volume 15 follows the format of earlier volumes in the series. The contents give the next installment in the varied aspects of acoustical imaging research. On this occasion, some emphasis was placed on the rela?? tionship of l1nderwater acoustics to acoustical imaging and a volume of papers under the title "Underwater Acoustics Proceedings from the 12th ICA Symposium held in Halifax," will appear at roughly the same time as this volume. There is no duplication in these volumes but they are in?? terlinked, at least to the extent that papers from common conference sessions appear in one or another volume. An innovation is the review paper presented at the beginning of the volume "A History of Acoustical Imaging," by G Wade. This fairly detailed review comes at a point in time when so much has been achieved and in some cases passed by, that a record of some of the earlier work might help to keep a balance with the large collections of research papers which have appeared in the many volumes |

Title | Quantum Mechanics on Phase Space |
Author(s) | Schroeck Jr., Franklin E |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1996. |
Description | XVI, 672 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | In this monograph, we shall present a new mathematical formulation of quantum theory, clarify a number of discrepancies within the prior formulation of quantum theory, give new applications to experiments in physics, and extend the realm of application of quantum theory well beyond physics. Here, we motivate this new formulation and sketch how it developed. Since the publication of Dirac's famous book on quantum mechanics [Dirac, 1930] and von Neumann's classic text on the mathematical foundations of quantum mechanics two years later [von Neumann, 1932], there have appeared a number of lines of development, the intent of each being to enrich quantum theory by extra?? polating or even modifying the original basic structure. These lines of development have seemed to go in different directions, the major directions of which are identified here: First is the introduction of group theoretical methods [Weyl, 1928; Wigner, 1931] with the natural extension to coherent state theory [Klauder and Sudarshan, 1968; Peremolov, 1971]. The call for an axiomatic approach to physics [Hilbert, 1900; Sixth Problem] led to the development of quantum logic [Mackey, 1963; Jauch, 1968; Varadarajan, 1968, 1970; Piron, 1976; Beltrametti & Cassinelli, 1981], to the creation of the operational approach [Ludwig, 1983-85, 1985; Davies, 1976] with its application to quantum communication theory [Helstrom, 1976; Holevo, 1982), and to the development of the C* approach [Emch, 1972]. An approach through stochastic differential equations ("stochastic mechanics") was developed [Nelson, 1964, 1966, 1967] |
