Title | Evaluating Measurement Accuracy : A Practical Approach |
Author(s) | Rabinovich, Semyon G |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2017. |
Description | XV, 323 p. 22 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book presents a systematic and comprehensive exposition of the theory of measurement accuracy and provides solutions that fill significant and long-standing gaps in the classical theory. It eliminates the shortcomings of the classical theory by including methods for estimating accuracy of single measurements, the most common type of measurement. The book also develops methods of reduction and enumeration for indirect measurements, which do not require Taylor series and produce a precise solution to this problem. It produces grounded methods and recommendations for summation of errors. The monograph also analyzes and critiques two foundation metrological documents, the International Vocabulary of Metrology (VIM) and the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement (GUM), and discusses directions for their revision. This new edition adds a step-by-step guide on how to evaluate measurement accuracy and recommendations on how to calculate systematic error of multiple measurements. There is also an extended section on the method of reduction, which provides an alternative to the least-square method and the method of enumeration. Many sections are also rewritten to improve the structure and usability of the material. The 3rd edition reflects the latest developments in metrology and offers new results, and it is designed to be accessible to readers at various levels and positions, including scientists, engineers, and undergraduate and graduate students. By presenting material from a practical perspective and offering solutions and recommendations for problems that arise in conducting real-life measurements, author Semyon Rabinovich offers an invaluable resource for scientists in any field |

Title | Dual-Mode Electro-photonic Silicon Biosensors |
Author(s) | Juan Col??s, Jos?? |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2017. |
Description | XV, 149 p. 105 illus., 89 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This highly interdisciplinary thesis reports ontwo innovative photonic biosensors that combine multiple simultaneous measurements to provide unique insights into the activity and structure of surface immobilized biological molecules. In addition, it presents a new silicon photonic biosensor that exploits two cascaded resonant sensors to provide two independent measurements of a biological layer immobilized on the surface. By combining these two measurements, it is possible to unambiguously quantify the density and thickness of the molecular layer; here, the approach???s ability to study molecular conformation and conformational changes in real timeis demonstrated. The electrophotonic biosensor integrates silicon photonics with electrochemistry into a single technology. This multi-modal biosensor provides a number of unique capabilities that extend the functionality of conventional silicon photonics. For example, by combining the complementary information revealed by simultaneous electrochemical and photonic measurements, it is possible to provide unique insights into on-surface electrochemical processes. Furthermore, the ability to create electrochemical reactions directly on the silicon surface provides a novel approach for engineering the chemical functionality of the photonic sensors. The electrophotonic biosensor thus represents a critical advance towards the development of very high-density photonic sensor arrays for multiplexed diagnostics |

Title | CMS Pixel Detector Upgrade and Top Quark Pole Mass Determination |
Author(s) | Spannagel, Simon |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2017. |
Description | XXVII, 274 p. 136 illus., 74 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This thesis addresses two different topics, both vital for implementing modern high-energy physics experiments: detector development and data analysis. Providing a concise introduction to both the standard model of particle physics and the basic principles of semiconductor tracking detectors, it presents the first measurement of the top quark pole mass from the differential cross-section of tt+J events in the dileptonic tt decay channel. The first part focuses on the development and characterization of silicon pixel detectors. To account for the expected increase in luminosity of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the pixel detector of the compact muon solenoid (CMS) experiment is replaced by an upgraded detector with new front-end electronics. It presents comprehensive test beam studies conducted to verify the design and quantify the performance of the new front-end in terms of tracking efficiency and spatial resolution. Furthermore, it proposes a new cluster interpol ation method, which utilizes the third central moment of the cluster charge distribution to improve the position resolution. The second part of the thesis introduces an alternative measurement of the top quark mass from the normalized differential production cross-sections of dileptonic top quark pair events with an additional jet. The energy measurement is 8TeV. Using theoretical predictions at next-to-leading order in perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), the top quark pole mass is determined using a template fit method |

Title | Observation of ??_???????_e Oscillation in the T2K Experiment |
Author(s) | Ieki, Kei |
Publication | Tokyo, Springer Japan, 2016. |
Description | XIII, 199 p. 156 illus., 12 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | In this thesis the author contributes to the analysis of neutrino beam data collected between 2010 and 2013 to identify ?????????e events at the Super-Kamiokande detector. In particular, the author improves the pion???nucleus interaction uncertainty, which is one of the dominant systematic error sources in T2K neutrino oscillation measurement. In the thesis, the measurement of ?????????e oscillation in the T2K (Tokai to Kamioka) experiment is presented and a new constraint on ??CP is obtained. This measurement and the analysis establish, at greater than 5?? significance, the observation of ?????????e oscillation for the first time in the world. Combining the T2K ?????????e oscillation measurement with the latest findings on oscillation parameters including the world average value of ??13 from reactor experiments, the constraint on the value of ??CP at the 90% confidence level is obtained. This constraint on ??CP is an important step towards the discovery of CP violation in the lepton sector. |

Title | Bohmian Mechanics, Open Quantum Systems and Continuous Measurements |
Author(s) | Nassar, Antonio B;Miret-Art??s, Salvador |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2017. |
Description | XVII, 241 p. 19 illus., 12 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book shows how Bohmian mechanics overcomes the need for a measurement postulate involving wave function collapse.????The measuring process plays a very important role in quantum mechanics. It has been??widely analyzed within??the Copenhagen approach through the Born and von Neumann postulates, with later extension due to L??ders.??In contrast, much less effort has been??invested in the measurement theory within the Bohmian mechanics framework. The continuous measurement (sharp and fuzzy, or strong and weak) problem is considered here??in this framework. The authors begin??by??generalizing the so-called Mensky approach, which is based on restricted path integral through quantum corridors. The measuring system is then considered to be an open quantum system following a stochastic Schr??dinger equation. Quantum stochastic trajectories (in the Bohmian sense)??and their role in??basic quantum processes are discussed in detail. The decoherence process is thereby described in terms of classical trajectories issuing from the violation of the noncrossing rule of quantum trajectories |

Title | Experiments on the Thermodynamics of Information Processing |
Author(s) | Gavrilov, Mom??ilo |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2017. |
Description | XVI, 147 p. 55 illus., 53 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This thesis reveals how the feedback trap technique, developed to trap small objects for biophysical measurement, could be adapted for the quantitative study of the thermodynamic properties of small systems. The experiments in this thesis are related to Maxwell???s demon, a hypothetical intelligent, ???neat fingered??? being that uses information to extract work from heat, apparently creating a perpetual-motion machine. ??The second law of thermodynamics should make that impossible, but how? That question has stymied physicists and provoked debate for a century and a half. The experiments in this thesis confirm a hypothesis proposed by Rolf Landauer over fifty years ago: that Maxwell???s demon would need to erase information, and that erasing information???resetting the measuring device to a standard starting state???requires dissipating as much energy as is gained. ??For his thesis work, the author used a ???feedback trap??? to study the motion of colloidal particles in ???v irtual potentials??? that may be manipulated arbitrarily. The feedback trap confines a freely diffusing particle in liquid by periodically measuring its position and applying an electric field to move it back to the origin |

Title | Search for Scalar Top Quarks and Higgsino-Like Neutralinos : SUSY Hunting With a ???Soft??? Lepton at the LHC |
Author(s) | Nobe, Takuya |
Publication | Singapore, Springer Singapore, 2016. |
Description | XII, 224 p. 122 illus., 19 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book reports a search for theoretically natural supersymmetry (SUSY) at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The data collected with the ATLAS detector in 2012 corresponding to 20 /fb of an integrated luminosity have been analyzed for stop pair production in proton???proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in the scenario of the higgsino-like neutralino. The author focuses on stop decaying into a bottom quark and chargino. In the scenario of the higgsino-like neutralino, the mass difference between charginos and neutralinos (??m) is expected to be small, and observable final-state particles are likely to have low-momentum (soft). The autho r develops a dedicated analysis with a soft lepton as a probe of particles from chargino decay, which suppresses the large amount of backgrounds. As a result of the analysis, no significant SUSY signal is observed. The 95% confidence-level exclusion limits are set to masses of stop and neutralino assuming ??m = 20 GeV. The region with ??M (the mass difference between stop and neutralino) < 70 GeV is excluded for the first time at stop mass of less than 210 GeV. The author also excludes the signals with ??M > 120 GeV up to 600 GeV of stop mass with neutralino mass of less than 280 GeV. The author clearly shows very few remaining parameter spaces for light stop (e.g., topology of stop decay is extremely similar to the SM top quark) by combining his results and previous ATLAS analyses. His results provide a strong constraint to searches for new physics in the future |
