TitleBiomass Energies : Resources, Links, Constraints
Author(s)Smil, Vaclav
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1983.
DescriptionXXI, 453 p. 16 illus : online resource
Abstract Notetions is not possible without first putting the problem into a wider con?? text. Consequently, before proceeding with detailed critical topical cov?? erage of individual biomass energy sources, uses, and effects, I will extend this preface with a few pages of rather personal reflections (I will use the same device in closing the book: after providing concise topical summaries in Chapter 8, I will conclude with some essayistic musings on renewable energetics, plants, people, and a scientist's responsibility). Interest in biomass energies is just a part of a broader global trend toward renewable energetics, a trend which has evolved speedily after the crude oil price escalation started in 1973. Yet one must be reminded that for the rich countries fossil fuels are, and for a long period shall remain, the foundation of an affluent civilization, while throughout the poor world the reliance of most people on biomass energies for everyday subsistence has brought many damaging environmental and social ef?? fects; that the reality of sharp price rises for crude oil (actually not so sharp once adjusted for inflation) should not be misconstrued as an "energy crisis"; that the rise of renew abies and the claims made on their behalf by countless enthusiasts look so much better on paper than in reality; and that the potential of biomass energies, an essential ingre?? dient of renewable scenarios, has been judged more with proselytizing zeal than with critical detachment

TitleNew Trends in Optical Soliton Transmission Systems : Proceedings of the Symposium held in Kyoto, Japan, 18???21 November 1997
Author(s)Hasegawa, Akira
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1998.
DescriptionXIII, 490 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book summarizes the proceedings of the invited talks presented at the International Symposium on New Trends in Optical Soliton Transmission Systems held in Kyoto during November 18 - 21, 1997. As a result of worldwide demand for ultra high bitrate transmissions and increased scientific interest from the soliton community, research on optical solitons in fibres has made remarkable progress in recent years. In view of these trends, the Research Group for Optical Soliton Communications (ROSC), chaired by Akira Hasegawa, was established in Japan in April 1995 to promote collaboration and information exchange among communication service companies, industries and academic circles in the theory and application of optical solitons. This symposium was organized as a part of the ROSC activities. As with the 1 st ROSC symposium, this symposium attracted enthusiastic response from worldwide researchers involved in the subject of soliton based communications and intensive discussions were held throughout the symposium. Particular emphases were made to dispersion managements of soliton transmission. I would like to note that in the }'t symposium the (adiabatic) dispersion managements just began to appear in reducing radiation at amplifiers and reducing collision effects in WDM system. These have become standard this time, but in addition new, non-adiabatic dispersion managements have been introduced independently by various scientists all over the world

TitleElectronic Structure and Properties of Hydrogen in Metals
Author(s)Satterthwaite, C.B;Jena, P
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1983.
DescriptionXV, 698 p. 178 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteHydrogen is the smallest impurity atom that can be implanted in a metallic host. Its small mass and strong interaction with the host electrons and nuclei are responsible for many anomalous and interesting solid state effects. In addition, hydrogen in metals gives rise to a number of technological problems such as hydrogen embrittlement, hydrogen storage, radiation hardening, first wall problems associated with nuclear fusion reactors, and degradation of the fuel cladding in fission reactors. Both the fundamental effects and applied problems have stimulated a great deal of inter?? est in the study of metal hydrogen systems in recent years. This is evident from a growing list of publications as well as several international conferences held in this field during the past decade. It is clear that a fundamental understanding of these problems re?? quires a firm knowledge of the basic interactions between hydrogen, host metal atoms, intrinsic lattice defects and electrons. This understanding is made particularly difficult by hyrogen's small mass and by the large lattice distortions that accompany the hydrogenation process. The purpose of the "International Symposium on the Electronic Structure and Properties of Hydrogen in Metals" held in Richmond, Virginia, March 4-6, 1982 was to increase our fundamental under?? standing of hydrogen in metals. Such knowledge is essential in solving technologically important questions. The symposium con?? sisted of twenty-two invited papers and seventy-two contributed poster presentations and attracted nearly 150 participants from thirteen countries. The proceedings of this symposium constitute this book

TitleHeterojunctions and Semiconductor Superlattices : Proceedings of the Winter School Les Houches, France, March 12???21, 1985
Author(s)Allan, Guy;Bastard, Gerals;Boccara, Nino;Lannoo, Michel;Voos, Michel
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1986.
DescriptionVIII, 254 p. 3 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThe Winter School held in Les Houches on March 12-21, 1985 was devoted to Semiconductor Heterojunctions and Superlattices, a topic which is recognized as being now one of the most interesting and active fields in semiconductor physics. In fact, following the pioneering work of Esaki and Tsu in 1970, the study of these two-dimensional semiconductor heterostructures has developed rapidly, both from the point of view of basic physics and of applications. For instance, modulation-doped heterojunctions are nowadays currently used to investigate the quantum Hall effect and to make very fast transistors. This book contains the lectures presented at this Winter School, showing in particular that many aspects of semiconductor heterojunctions and super?? lattices were treated, extending from the fabrication of these two-dimensional systems to their basic properties and applications in micro-and opto-electron?? ics. Among the subjects which were covered, one can quote as examples: molecular beam epitaxy and metallorganic chemical vapor deposition of semi?? conductor compounds; band structure of superlattices; properties of elec?? trons in heterojunctions, including the fractional quantum Hall effect; opti?? cal properties of two-dimensional heterostructures; quantum well lasers; and two-dimensional electron gas field effect transistors. It is clear that two-dimensional semiconductor systems are raising a great deal of interest in many industrial and university laboratories. From the number of applications which were received and from the reactions of the participants, it can certainly be asserted that this School corresponded to a need and came at the right time

TitleExtended Irreversible Thermodynamics
Author(s)Jou, David;Casas-Vazquez, Jose;Lebon, Georgy
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1996.
DescriptionXIV, 383 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis is the first comprehensive monograph on a new thermodynamic theory that goes beyond the classical theory of irreversible processes. In contrast to the classical approach, the local equilibrium hypothesis is abandoned. The basic variables describing the system are no longer the equilibrium conserved variables: the latter are complemented by non-equilibrium quantities taking the form of flux heat, the viscous pressure tensor, the flux of matter, the flux of electric current, etc. The statements behind extended thermodynamics are confirmed by the kinetic theory of gases and statistical mechanics. The book covers a wide spectrum of applications such as hyperbolic heat conduction, rheological models, waves in fluids, generalized hydrodynamics, phase diagrams of solutions under shear, non-Fickian diffusion, electrical systems, and a relativistic formulation including some cosmological applications. The book also contains a wide discussion of the foundations and the scope of the most current theories on non-equilibrium thermodynamics (classical irreversible thermodynamics and rational thermodynamics). The new edition reflects new developments in theory and applications, adds new problems, and contains a new chapter on the interplay between hydrodynamics and thermodynamics, a field of active research

TitleMagnetic Phase Transitions : Proceedings of a Summer School at the Ettore Majorana Centre, Erice, Italy, 1???15 July, 1983
Author(s)Ausloos, M;Elliott, R.J
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1983.
DescriptionVIII, 272 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe present volume contains the courses given at a Summer School on "Magne?? tic Phase Transitions" held at the Ettore Majorana Centre for Scientific Culture, at Erice (Trapani), Italy in July 1983 under the auspices of the Condensed Matter Division of the European Physical Society in their series on Materials Science and Technology. The student participants came from West Germany, Great Britain, Brazil, Greece, Switzerland, Sweden, Italy, USA and The Netherlands. The lecturers came from various European countries, Israel, USA and Canada. The atmosphere at the meeting was excellent and a good spirit of companion?? ship developed during two weeks of working together. The spread of interests among the lecturers and students was divers;jfied but balanced. The main lec?? turing contributions are reported in this volume. They represent up-to-date reviews in a pedagogical style. In addition, informal presentations on cur?? rent research interests were made which have not been included. The school attempted to summarize the current position on the properties of magnetic phase transitions from several points of view. The range and scope of the?? oretical techniques, and of particular aspects of materials or phenomena as observed experimentally were very well put forward by the lecturers. The grouping of manuscripts in chapters does not represent, however, the sched?? ule followed during the school. Contributions on mean-field approximations and renormalization-group methods either for static or dynamic phenomena can be found at various places in the following sections

TitleMultiple Diffraction of X-Rays in Crystals
Author(s)In-Hang, Shih-Lin
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1984.
DescriptionXI, 300 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe three-dimensional arrangement of atoms and molecules in crystals and the comparable magnitude of x-ray wavelengths and interatomic distances make it possible for crystals to have more than one set of atomic planes that satisfy Bragg's law and simultaneously diffract an incident x-ray beam - this is the so-called multiple diffraction. This type of diffraction should, in prin?? ciple, reflect three-dimensional information about the structure of the dif?? fracting material. Recent progress in understanding this diffraction phenome?? non and in utilizing this diffraction technique in solid-state and materials sciences reveals the diversity as well as the importance of multiple diffraction of x-rays in application. Unfortunately, there has been no single book written that gives a sys?? tematic review of this type of diffraction, encompasses its diverse applica?? tions, and foresees future trends gf development. It is for this purpose that this book is designed. It is hoped that its appearance may possibly turn more attention of condensed-matter physicists, chemists and material scientists toward this particular phenomenon, and that new methods of non-destructive analysis of matter using this diffraction technique may be developed in the future
