TitleControl of Complex Systems
Author(s)Astr??m, Karl J;Albertos, Pedro;Blanke, Mogens;Isidori, Alberto;Schaufelberger, Walther;Sanz, Ricardo
PublicationLondon, Springer London, 2001.
DescriptionXII, 482 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe world of artificial systems is reaching complexity levels that es?? cape human understanding. Surface traffic, electricity distribution, air?? planes, mobile communications, etc. , are examples that demonstrate that we are running into problems that are beyond classical scientific or engi?? neering knowledge. There is an ongoing world-wide effort to understand these systems and develop models that can capture its behavior. The reason for this work is clear, if our lack of understanding deepens, we will lose our capability to control these systems and make they behave as we want. Researchers from many different fields are trying to understand and develop theories for complex man-made systems. This book presents re?? search from the perspective of control and systems theory. The book has grown out of activities in the research program Control of Complex Systems (COSY). The program has been sponsored by the Eu?? ropean Science Foundation (ESF) which for 25 years has been one of the leading players in stimulating scientific research. ESF is a European asso?? ciation of more than 60 leading national science agencies spanning more than 20 countries. ESF covers has standing committees in Medical Sci?? ences, Life and Environmental Sciences, Physical and Engineering Sci?? ences, Humanities and Social Sciences. The COSY program was ESF's first activity in the Engineering Sciences. The program run for a period of five years starting January 1995

TitleDelay-Coupled Complex Systems : and Applications to Lasers
Author(s)Flunkert, Valentin
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2011.
DescriptionXIII, 180 p. 69 illus., 13 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis thesis deals with the effects of time-delay in complex nonlinear systems and in particular with its applications in complex networks, and relates it to control theory and nonlinear optics. Delays arise naturally in networks of coupled systems due to finite signal propagation speeds and are thus a key issue in many areas of physics, biology, medicine, and technology. Synchronization phenomena in these networks play an important role, e.g., in the context of learning, cognitive and pathological states in the brain, for secure communication with chaotic lasers or gene regulation. The work includes both novel results on the control of complex dynamics by time-delayed feedback and new fundamental insights into the interplay of delay and synchronization. One of the most interesting results here is a solution to the problem of complete synchronization in general networks with large coupling delay, i.e., large distances between the nodes, by giving a universal classification of networks which has a wide range of interdisciplinary applications

TitleThree Dimensional Creativity : Three Navigations to Extend our Thoughts
Author(s)Lee, Kwang Hyung
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2014.
DescriptionX, 87 p. 94 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteIs creativity something that we are simply born with and cannot hone with effort? Some say that creativity cannot be cultivated. Is it true? In general, our thinking sticks to reality unless there is any external stimulation. With our thinking fixed on a certain situation, it becomes difficult to come up with a fresh idea. In this regard, three questions are suggested: (1) Question of Time: When a problem arises, question yourself on a time axis first of all. How would the matter be handled 10 or 20 years from now? (2) Question of Space: Ask yourself some questions on its spatial elements. How would the matter be handled in Saudi Arabia or in China? (3) Question of Field: Apply the given problem in a variety of fields. How would the matter be handled in the field of music or electronic engineering? The three questions suggested here are given on the three axes: time, space, and field, and this book deals with theoretical and practical aspects on the topics. In this way it is a unique book about the systematic method of developing creativity, which will have appeal to researchers and students in multidisciplinary fields from neuroscience to physics, and engineering and computer science, as well as a general public

TitleConsensus and Synchronization in Complex Networks
Author(s)Kocarev, Ljupco
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2013.
DescriptionIX, 275 p : online resource
Abstract NoteSynchronization in complex networks is one of the most captivating cooperative phenomena in nature and has been shown to be of fundamental importance in such varied circumstances as the continued existence of species, the functioning of heart pacemaker cells, epileptic seizures, neuronal firing in the feline visual cortex and cognitive tasks in humans. E.g. coupled visual and acoustic interactions make fireflies flash, crickets chirp, and an audience clap in unison. On the other hand, in distributed systems and networks, it is often necessary for some or all of the nodes to calculate some function of certain parameters, e.g. sink nodes in sensor networks being tasked with calculating the average measurement value of all the sensors or multi-agent systems in which all agents are required to coordinate their speed and direction. When all nodes calculate the same function of the initial values in the system, they are said to reach consensus. Such concepts - sometimes also called state agreement, rendezvous, and observer design in control theory - have recently received considerable attention in the computational science and engineering communities. Quite generally, consensus formation among a small group of expert models of an objective process is challenging because the separate models have already been optimized in their own parameter spaces. ?? The mathematical framework for describing synchronization and consensus in natural and technical sciences is similar and the aim of this book is to provide the first comprehensive work in which synchronization and consensus are presented jointly, thereby allowing the reader to learn about the similarities and differences of the two concepts in both a systematic and application-oriented fashion. The ten chapters have been carefully selected so as to reflect the current state-of-the-art of synchronization and consensus in networked systems; in particular two chapters dealing with a novel application of synchronization concepts in machine learning have been included. ?? The book is aimed at all scientists and engineers, graduate students and practitioners, working in the fields of synchronization and related phenomena

TitleSemi-Autonomous Networks : Effective Control of Networked Systems through Protocols, Design, and Modeling
Author(s)Chapman, Airlie
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2015.
DescriptionXXXI, 187 p. 53 illus., 33 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis thesis analyzes and explores the design of controlled networked dynamic systems - dubbed semi-autonomous networks. The work approaches the problem of effective control of semi-autonomous networks from three fronts: protocols which are run on individual agents in the network; the network interconnection topology design; and efficient modeling of these often large-scale networks. The author extended the popular consensus protocol to advection and nonlinear consensus.?? The network redesign algorithms are supported by a game-theoretic and an online learning regret analysis

TitlePedestrian Dynamics : Feedback Control of Crowd Evacuation
Author(s)Kachroo, Pushkin;Al-nasur, Sadeq J;Wadoo, Sabiha Amin;Shende, Apoorva
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2008.
DescriptionXIV, 246 p : online resource
Abstract NoteEffective evacuation of people from closed spaces is an extremely important topic, since it can save real lives in emergency situations that can be brought about by natural and human made disasters. Usually there are static maps posted at various places at buildings that illustrate routes that should be taken during emergencies. However, when disasters happen, some of these routes might not be valid because of structural problems due to the disaster itself and more importantly because of the distribution of congestion of people spread over the area. The average flow of traffic depends on the traffic density. Therefore, if all the people follow the same route, or follow a route without knowing the congestion situation, they can end up being part of the congestion which results in very low flow rate or worse a traffic jam. Hence it becomes extremely important to design evacuations that inform people how fast and in which direction to move based on real-time information obtained about the people distribution using various sensors. The sensors used can include cameras, infra red sensors etc., and the technology used to inform people about the desired movement can be communicated using light matrix, small speakers, and in the future using wireless PDAs. This book provides mathematical models of pedestrian movements that can be used specifically for designing feedback control laws for effective evacuation. The book also provides various feedback control laws to accomplish the effective evacuation. The book uses the hydrodynamic hyperbolic PDE macroscopic pedestrian models since they are amenable to feedback control design. The control designs are obtained through different nonlinear techniques including Lyapunov functional techniques, feedback linearization in the distributed model, and some discretized techniques

TitleMeasurement Errors and Uncertainties : Theory and Practice
Author(s)Rabinovich, Semyon G
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 2005.
DescriptionXII, 308 p. 30 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteMeasurement Errors and Uncertainties addresses the most important problems that physicists and engineers encounter when estimating errors and uncertainty. Building from the fundamentals of measurement theory, the author develops the theory of accuracy of measurements and offers a wealth of practical recommendations and examples of applications. This new edition covers a wide range of subjects, including: - Basic concepts of metrology - Measuring instruments characterization, standardization and calibration -Estimation of errors and uncertainty of single and multiple measurements - Modern probability-based methods of estimating measurement uncertainty With this new edition, the author completes the development of the new theory of indirect measurements. This theory provides more accurate and efficient methods for processing indirect measurement data. It eliminates the need to calculate the correlation coefficient - a stumbling block in measurement data processing - and offers for the first time a way to obtain the confidence intervals. In other words, this new theory provides means to calculate a well-grounded estimate of measurement uncertainty for this complex but widely used type of measurements. Acclaim for previous editions: "Extremely useful to metrologists and to anyone interested in measurement errors" (MEASUREMENT SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY) "I suggest that every technical library should own a copy of Measurement Errors. Serious experimentalists whose interests are broad will surely want to examine the book with the intent of buying it". (Applied Mechanics Review)
