Title | Nonlinear System Identification : From Classical Approaches to Neural Networks, Fuzzy Models, and Gaussian Processes |
Author(s) | Nelles, Oliver |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2020. |
Description | X, 1203 p. 670 illus., 179 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book provides engineers and scientists in academia and industry with a thorough understanding of the underlying principles of nonlinear system identification. It equips them to apply the models and methods discussed to real problems with confidence, while also making them aware of potential difficulties that may arise in practice. Moreover, the book is self-contained, requiring only a basic grasp of matrix algebra, signals and systems, and statistics. Accordingly, it can also serve as an introduction to linear system identification, and provides a practical overview of the major optimization methods used in engineering. The focus is on gaining an intuitive understanding of the subject and the practical application of the techniques discussed. The book is not written in a theorem/proof style; instead, the mathematics is kept to a minimum, and the ideas covered are illustrated with numerous figures, examples, and real-world applications. In the past, nonlinear system identification was a field characterized by a variety of ad-hoc approaches, each applicable only to a very limited class of systems. With the advent of neural networks, fuzzy models, Gaussian process models, and modern structure optimization techniques, a much broader class of systems can now be handled. Although one major aspect of nonlinear systems is that virtually every one is unique, tools have since been developed that allow each approach to be applied to a wide variety of systems. |

Author(s) | Luokkala, Barry B |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2019. |
Description | XXIII, 335 p. 42 illus., 31 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | How does Einstein???s description of space and time compare with Doctor Who? Can James Bond really escape from an armor-plated railroad car by cutting through the floor with a laser concealed in a wristwatch? What would it take to create a fully intelligent android, such as Star Trek???s Commander Data? Exploring Science Through Science Fiction addresses these and other intriguing questions, using science fiction as a springboard for discussing fundamental science concepts and cutting-edge science research. It includes references to original research papers, landmark scientific publications and technical documents, as well as a broad range of science literature at a more popular level. The revised second edition includes expanded discussions on topics such as gravitational waves and black holes, machine learning and quantum computing, gene editing, and more. In all, the second edition now features over 220 references to specific scenes in more than 160 sci-fi movies and TV episodes, spanning over 100 years of cinematic history. Designed as the primary text for a college-level course, this book will appeal to students across the fine arts, humanities, and hard sciences, as well as any reader with an interest in science and science fiction. Praise for the first edition: "This journey from science fiction to science fact provides an engaging and surprisingly approachable read..." Author(s) | Palestini, Claudio |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2020. |
Description | VIII, 315 p. 170 illus., 4 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | Technology has been the spark that ignited NATO???s interest and commitment to scientific advancement during its history. Since its creation, the Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Programme has been instrumental to NATO???s commitment to innovation, science and technological advancement. During the years, SPS has demonstrated a flexible and versatile approach to practical scientific cooperation, and has promoted knowledge-sharing, building capacity, and projected stability outside NATO territory. The priorities addressed by the SPS Programme are aligned with NATO???s strategic objectives, and aim to tackle emerging security challenges that require dynamic adaptation for the prevention and mitigation of risks. By addressing priorities such as advanced technologies, hybrid threats, and counter-terrorism, the Programme deals with new, contemporary challenges. On 17-18 September 2019, the SPS Programme gathered at the KU Leuven University a wide number of researchers from a selection of on-going and recently closed SPS projects in the field of security-related advanced technologies for a ???Cluster Workshop on Advanced Technologies???. The workshop covered, in particular, the following scientific domains: communication systems, advanced materials, sensors and detectors, and unmanned and autonomous systems. This book provides an overview on how these projects have contributed to the development of new technologies and innovative solutions and recommendations for future actions in the NATO SPS programme |

Title | Multi-Valued and Universal Binary Neurons : Theory, Learning and Applications |
Author(s) | Aizenberg, Igor;Aizenberg, Naum N;Vandewalle, Joos P.L |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 2000. |
Description | IV, 276 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Multi-Valued and Universal Binary Neurons deals with two new types of neurons: multi-valued neurons and universal binary neurons. These neurons are based on complex number arithmetic and are hence much more powerful than the typical neurons used in artificial neural networks. Therefore, networks with such neurons exhibit a broad functionality. They can not only realise threshold input/output maps but can also implement any arbitrary Boolean function. Two learning methods are presented whereby these networks can be trained easily. The broad applicability of these networks is proven by several case studies in different fields of application: image processing, edge detection, image enhancement, super resolution, pattern recognition, face recognition, and prediction. The book is hence partitioned into three almost equally sized parts: a mathematical study of the unique features of these new neurons, learning of networks of such neurons, and application of such neural networks. Most of this work was developed by the first two authors over a period of more than 10 years and was only available in the Russian literature. With this book we present the first comprehensive treatment of this important class of neural networks in the open Western literature. Multi-Valued and Universal Binary Neurons is intended for anyone with a scholarly interest in neural network theory, applications and learning. It will also be of interest to researchers and practitioners in the fields of image processing, pattern recognition, control and robotics |

Title | Adaptivity and Learning : An Interdisciplinary Debate |
Author(s) | K??hn, Reimer;Menzel, Randolf;Menzel, Wolfram;Ratsch, Ulrich;Richter, Michael M;Stamatescu, Ion-Olimpiu |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2003. |
Description | XII, 403 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Adaptivity and learning have in recent decades become a common concern of scientific disciplines. These issues have arisen in mathematics, physics, biology, informatics, economics, and other fields more or less simultaneously. The aim of this publication is the interdisciplinary discourse on the phenomenon of learning and adaptivity. Different perspectives are presented and compared to find fruitful concepts for the disciplines involved. The authors select problems showing representative traits concerning the frame up, the methods and the achievements rather than to present extended overviews. To foster interdisciplinary dialogue, this book presents diverse perspectives from various scientific fields, including: - The biological perspective: e.g., physiology, behaviour; - The mathematical perspective: e.g., algorithmic and stochastic learning; - The physics perspective: e.g., learning for artificial neural networks; - The "learning by experience" perspective: reinforcement learning, social learning, artificial life; - The cognitive perspective: e.g., deductive/inductive procedures, learning and language learning as a high level cognitive process; - The application perspective: e.g., robotics, control, knowledge engineering |
