TitleElectroweak Baryogenesis and Its Phenomenology
Author(s)Fuyuto, Kaori
PublicationSingapore, Springer Singapore, 2018.
DescriptionXII, 95 p. 66 illus., 20 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis thesis focuses on one of the mechanisms for solving the baryon asymmetry of the Universe (BAU) which is a long-standing open question in both particle physics and cosmophysics. Electroweak baryogenesis (EWBG) is one attractive hypothetical scenario to solve this mystery because it can be verified by collider experiments. The author aims to clarify the possibility of EWBG, and to show its verifiability using the Higgs physics and electric dipole moments (EDMs) of an electron, neutron, and proton. The thesis begins with a review of the BAU and EWBG. Subsequently, the possibility of EWBG in one effective model is discussed, which can be applied to some motivated physics beyond the Standard Model. Numerical analyses of electroweak phase transition and sphaleron solution are presented, and the closed time path formalism is also explained to estimate the BAU. After essential calculations for investigation of the possibility of EWBG, the relationship between the BAU and EDMs is described. Through the discussion of the result, it is concluded that both EDMs and the Higgs physics verify the scenario completely. The whole discussion in this thesis causes us to accept the current situation that is ripe for verification of EWBG

TitleEmergent Superconductivity in Low Dimensions
Author(s)Ansermet, Diane
PublicationSingapore, Springer Singapore, 2018.
DescriptionXXXIX, 165 p. 113 illus., 94 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book explores the relationship between electronic correlations, dimensionality, inhomogeneities, and superconductivity in low-dimensional systems by studying single crystals of the quasi-one-dimensional Na2-??Mo6Se6, composed of MoSe filaments weakly coupled by Na atoms and subject to intrinsic disorder (?? > 0). It shows that the Na2-??Mo6Se6 displays strong electronic correlations in its normal state, whereas a superconducting ground state emerges from Anderson localized electrons. Two novel behaviors of the superconducting state are observed: first, a disorder induced enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature; second, a reentrant phase coherence with increasing temperature, magnetic field, and current. It also analyzes the intrinsic properties of Na2-??Mo6Se6 are analyzed to offer a thorough understanding of these phenomena. The emergence of superconductivity in such low-dimensional systems provides a fruitful playground to explore electronic order and correlations

TitleAb Initio Studies on Superconductivity in Alkali-Doped Fullerides
Author(s)Nomura, Yusuke
PublicationSingapore, Springer Singapore, 2016.
DescriptionXX, 143 p. 27 illus., 18 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book covers high-transition temperature (Tc) s-wave superconductivity and the neighboring Mott insulating phase in alkali-doped fullerides. The author presents (1) a unified theoretical description of the phase diagram and (2) a nonempirical calculation of Tc. For these purposes, the author employs an extension of the DFT+DMFT (density-functional theory + dynamical mean-field theory). He constructs a realistic electron???phonon-coupled Hamiltonian with a newly formulated downfolding method. The Hamiltonian is analyzed by means of the extended DMFT. A notable aspect of the approach is that it requires only the crystal structure as a priori knowledge. Remarkably, the nonempirical calculation achieves for the first time a quantitative reproduction of the experimental phase diagram including the superconductivity and the Mott phase. The calculated Tc agrees well with the experimental data, with the difference within 10 K. The book provides details of the computational scheme, which can also be applied to other superconductors and other phonon-related topics. The author clearly describes a superconducting mechanism where the Coulomb and electron?????phonon interactions show an unusual cooperation in the superconductivity thanks to the Jahn???Teller nature of the phonons

TitleObservational and Theoretical Studies on Dwarf-nova Outbursts
Author(s)Kimura, Mariko
PublicationSingapore, Springer Singapore, 2020.
DescriptionXXX, 179 p. 80 illus., 50 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteAccretion disks are ubiquitous in our universe, and produce intense brightening. How does the gas in the disk lose its angular momentum to release massive amounts of gravitational energy? This is one of the biggest open questions in astronomy. This book studies four types of newly detected outbursts in dwarf novae through optical observations and/or numerical simulations and puts forward physical interpretations of these outbursts on the basis of the disk instability model, the most plausible model for dwarf-nova outbursts. It demonstrates that the disk-instability model can explain rich variety in dwarf-nova outbursts if some new aspects are taken into account (e.g. the extremely slow growth of tidal instability and thermal instability in the disk misaligned against the binary orbital plane). Moreover, it shares valuable insights on the evolution of binary systems by finding period bouncers and dwarf novae with F-type companion stars, which are rare objects

TitleHydrogen and Hydrogen-Containing Molecules on Metal Surfaces : Towards the Realization of Sustainable Hydrogen Economy
Author(s)Kasai, Hideaki;Padama, Allan Abraham B;Chantaramolee, Bhume;Arevalo, Ryan L
PublicationSingapore, Springer Singapore, 2020.
DescriptionXVI, 151 p. 98 illus., 53 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book is dedicated to recent advancements in theoretical and computational studies on the interactions of hydrogen and hydrogenated molecules with metal surfaces. These studies are driven by the development of high-performance computers, new experimental findings, and the extensive work of technological applications toward the realization of sustainable hydrogen economy. Understanding of the elementary processes of the physical and chemical reactions on the atomic scale is important in pursuing materials with high chemical reactivity and catalytic activity as well as high stability and durability. From this point of view, the book focuses on the behavior of hydrogen and hydrogenated molecules on flat, stepped, and reconstructed metal surfaces. It also tackles quantum mechanical properties of hydrogen and related adsorbates such as the molecular orbital angular momentum (spin) and diffusion along the minimum potential energy landscape on metal surfaces. All of these have been found to profoundly influence the outcomes of (1) catalytic reactions that involve hydrogen; (2) hydrogen storage in metals; and (3) hydrogen purification membranes. Lastly, it surveys the current status of the technology, outlook, and challenges for the long-desired sustainable hydrogen economy in relation to the topics covered in the book.
