TitleDescriptive Archaeoastronomy and Ancient Indian Chronology
Author(s)Ghosh, Amitabha
PublicationSingapore, Springer Singapore, 2020.
DescriptionXV, 198 p. 140 illus., 20 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book presents the basic fundamentals of descriptive archaeoastronomy and its application to the astronomical descriptions found in ancient Indian scriptures. Archaeoastronomy is a branch of positional astronomy that helps to determine the epochs of ancient astronomical alignments and special astronomical events. In this book, only the descriptions of special stellar alignments and events found in ancient texts can identify the antiquity of the descriptions. India possesses a large volume of ancient scriptures like Vedas and Puranas which contain many astronomical descriptions as in ancient India positional astronomy was well developed. The antiquities of these texts are determined through archaeoastronomical techniques. Major events like Mahabharata War are dated and using these dates a chronology of ancient India is determined. The astronomically determined chronology is compared with the results from various archaeological, palaeoclimatological, geological and genealogical investigations of ancient India. This introductory book interests readers interested in unveiling the mystery involved with the protohistory of this ancient civilization

TitlePlutonium : How Nuclear Power???s Dream Fuel Became a Nightmare
Author(s)von Hippel, Frank;Takubo, Masafumi;Kang, Jungmin
PublicationSingapore, Springer Singapore, 2019.
DescriptionXXI, 177 p. 51 illus., 44 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book provides a readable and thought-provoking analysis of the issues surrounding nuclear fuel reprocessing and fast-neutron reactors, including discussion of resources, economics, radiological risk and resistance to nuclear proliferation. It describes the history and science behind reprocessing, and gives an overview of the status of reprocessing programmes around the world. It concludes that such programs should be discontinued. While nuclear power is seen by many as the only realistic solution to the carbon emission problem, some national nuclear establishments have been pursuing development and deployment of sodium-cooled plutonium breeder reactors, and plutonium recycling. Its proponents argue that this system would offer significant advantages relative to current light water reactor technology in terms of greater uranium utilization efficiency, and that separating out the long-lived plutonium and other transuranics from spent fuel and fissioning them in fast reactors would greatly reduce the duration of the toxicity of radioactive waste. However, the history of efforts to deploy this system commercially in a number of countries over the last six decades has been one of economic and technical failure and, in some cases, was used to mask clandestine nuclear weapon development programs. Covering topics of significant public interest including nuclear safety, fuel storage, environmental impact and the spectre of nuclear terrorism, this book presents a comprehensive analysis of the issue for nuclear engineers, policy analysts, government officials and the general public.

TitleDiagnosis and Robust Control of Complex Building Central Chilling Systems for Enhanced Energy Performance
Author(s)Gao, Dian-Ce
PublicationSingapore, Springer Singapore, 2019.
DescriptionXX, 180 p. 99 illus., 91 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book discusses enhancing the overall energy performance of building central air-conditioning systems through fault diagnosis and robust control strategies. Fault diagnosis strategies aim to determine the exact cause of problems and evaluate the energy impact on the system, while robust control strategies aim to manage chilled water systems to avoid the occurrence of low delta-T syndrome and deficit flow problems. Presenting the first academic study of the diagnostic method and control mechanism of ???small temperature difference syndrome???, the book describes the highly robust and adaptive fault-tolerant control method developed to overcome the influences of external disturbance on the process control in practical applications. The diagnostic technology developed provides a predictive assessment of the energy dissipation effect of the fault. This book is a valuable reference resource for researchers and designers in the areas of building energy management and built environment control, as well as for senior undergraduate and graduate students

TitleAngle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy Studies of 2D Material Heterostructures
Author(s)Wang, Eryin
PublicationSingapore, Springer Singapore, 2020.
DescriptionXIV, 79 p. 55 illus., 51 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book focuses on angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy studies on novel interfacial phenomena in three typical two-dimensional material heterostructures: graphene/h-BN, twisted bilayer graphene, and topological insulator/high-temperature superconductors. Since the discovery of graphene, two-dimensional materials have proven to be quite a large ???family???. As an alternative to searching for other family members with distinct properties, the combination of two-dimensional (2D) materials to construct heterostructures offers a new platform for achieving new quantum phenomena, exploring new physics, and designing new quantum devices. By stacking different 2D materials together and utilizing interfacial periodical potential and order-parameter coupling, the resulting heterostructure???s electronic properties can be tuned to achieve novel properties distinct from those of its constituent materials. This book offers a valuable reference guide for all researchers and students working in the area of condensed matter physics and materials science

TitleUtilization of Renormalized Mean-Field Theory upon Novel Quantum Materials
Author(s)Tu, Wei-Lin
PublicationSingapore, Springer Singapore, 2019.
DescriptionXVI, 91 p. 33 illus., 27 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book offers a new approach to the long-standing problem of high-Tc copper-oxide superconductors. It has been demonstrated that starting from a strongly correlated Hamiltonian, even within the mean-field regime, the ???competing orders??? revealed by experiments can be achieved using numerical calculations. In the introduction, readers will find a brief review of the high-Tc problem and the unique challenges it poses, as well as a comparatively simple numerical approach, the renormalized mean-field theory (RMFT), which provides rich results detailed in the following chapters. With an additional phase picked up by the original Hamiltonian, some behaviors of interactive fermions under an external magnetic field, which have since been experimentally observed using cold atom techniques, are also highlighted.

TitleElectronic States of Narrow-Gap Semiconductors Under Multi-Extreme Conditions
Author(s)Akiba, Kazuto
PublicationSingapore, Springer Singapore, 2019.
DescriptionXXIV, 147 p. 91 illus., 56 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book discusses the latest investigations into the electronic structure of narrow-gap semiconductors in extreme conditions, and describes in detail magnetic field and pressure measurement using two high-quality single crystals: black phosphorus (BP) and lead telluride (PbTe). The book presents two significant findings for BP and PbTe. The first is the successful demonstration of the pressure-induced transition from semiconductor to semimetal in the electronic structure of BP using magnetoresistance measurements. The second is the quantitative estimation of how well the Dirac fermion description works for electronic properties in PbTe. The overviews on BP and PbTe from the point of view of material properties help readers quickly learn typical electronic characters of narrow-gap semiconductor materials, which have recently attract interest in topological features in condensed matter physics. Additionally the introductory review of the principles and methodology allows readers to easily understand the high magnetic field and pressure experiments

TitleElectrical and Optoelectronic Properties of the Nanodevices Composed of Two-Dimensional Materials : Graphene and Molybdenum (IV) Disulfide
Author(s)Liu, Cheng-Hua
PublicationSingapore, Springer Singapore, 2018.
DescriptionXIII, 74 p. 49 illus., 42 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis thesis focuses on the transport and magneto-transport properties of graphene p-n-p junctions, such as the pronounced quantum Hall effect, a well-defined plateau???plateau transition point, and scaling behavior. In addition, it demonstrates persistent photoconductivity (PPC) in the monolayer MoS2 devices, an effect that can be attributed to random localized potential fluctuations in the devices. Further, it studies scaling behavior at zeroth Landau level and high performance of fractional values of quantum Hall plateaus in these graphene p-n-p devices. Moreover, it demonstrates a unique and efficient means of controlling the PPC effect in monolayer MoS2. This PPC effect may offer novel functionalities for MoS2-based optoelectronic applications in the future
