Title | Photonic Switching : Proceedings of the First Topical Meeting, Incline Village, Nevada, March 18???20, 1987 |
Author(s) | Gustafson, T. Kenneth;Smith, Peter W |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1988. |
Description | X, 218 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The first topical meeting on Photonic Switching was held March 18-20, 1987 in Incline Village, Nev., USA in conjunction with the second topical meeting on Optical Computing. It was sponsored by the IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society and the Optical Society of America with the co?? operation of the IEEE Communications Society. The attendance at these meetings was well in excess of 500 persons - a measure of the growing worldwide interest in optical techniques for switching and signal process?? ing. Our goal in organizing the Photonic Switching meeting was to provide a forum for the presentation of original papers on the subjects of devices and architectures suitable for switching, multiplexing or routing of optical signals. The purpose of the meeting was to foster and enhance interaction between two groups that share a common interest in exploring possible applications of photonic switching technology: people working on optical switching devices and components, and people working on future switching systems and networks |

Title | Quantum Networks : Dynamics of Open Nanostructures |
Author(s) | Mahler, G??nter;Weberru??, Volker A |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1995. |
Description | XV, 392 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Quantum Networks is focused on density matrix theory cast into a representation - SU(n) algebra - particularly adapted to describing networks of quasi-molecular subsystems. This approach is important for understanding how classical properties emerge within a quantum mechanical world and how non-classical features survive in a classical environment. Non-classical aspects such as single-particle and multi-particle coherence are introduced and discussed. A picture evolves of how these features are generated and destroyed by interactions with the environment. The outcome is a description of how the dynamics of individual quantum sytems are interrelated with information dynamics. This book will be invaluable for graduates and scientists with a theoretical interest in quantum systems. It will help them develop an intuitive feeling for the meaning of quantum information and how its rules depend on the environment |

Title | Lasers and Optical Engineering |
Author(s) | Das, Pankaj K |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 1991. |
Description | XXII, 470 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | A textbook on lasers and optical engineering should include all aspects of lasers and optics; however, this is a large undertaking. The objective of this book is to give an introduction to the subject on a level such that under?? graduate students (mostly juniors/seniors), from disciplines like electrical engineering, physics, and optical engineering, can use the book. To achieve this goal, a lot of basic background material, central to the subject, has been covered in optics and laser physics. Students with an elementary knowledge of freshman physics and with no formal courses in electromagnetic theory should be able to follow the book, although for some sections, knowledge of electromagnetic theory, the Fourier transform, and linear systems would be highly beneficial. There are excellent books on optics, laser physics, and optical engineering. Actually, most of my knowledge was acquired through these. However, when I started teaching an undergraduate course in 1974, under the same heading as the title of this book, I had to use four books to cover the material I thought an electrical engineer needed for his introduction to the world of lasers and optical engineering. In my sabbatical year, 1980-1981, I started writing class notes for my students, so that they could get through the course by possibly buying only one book. Eventually, these notes grew with the help of my undergraduate and graduate students, and the final result is this book |

Title | Solid-State Laser Engineering |
Author(s) | Koechner, Walter |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1992. |
Description | XIII, 635 p. 167 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book is written from an industrial perspective and provides a detailed discussion of solid-state lasers, their characteristics, design and construction. Emphasis is placed on engineering and practical considerations. The book is aimed mainly at the practicing scientist or engineer who is interested in the design or use of solid-state lasers, but the comprehensive treatment of the subject will make the work useful also to students of laser physics who seek to supplement their theoretical knowledge with engineering information. In order to present the subject as clearly as possible, phenomenological descriptions using models have been used rather than abstract mathematical descriptions. This results in a simplified presentation. The descriptions are enhanced by the inclusion of numerical and technical data, tables and graphs. This new edition has been updated and revised to take account of important new developments, concepts, and technologies that have emerged since the publication of the first and second editions |

Title | Principles of Lasers |
Author(s) | Svelto, Orazio |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1998. |
Description | XXI, 605 p. 35 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book is motivated by the very favorable reception given to the previous editions as well as by the considerable range of new developments in the laser field since the publication of the third edition in 1989. These new developments include, among others, quantum-well and muitiple-quantum-welliasers, diode-pumped solid-state lasers, new concepts for both stable and unstable resonators, femtosecond lasers, ultra-high-brightness lasers, etc. This edition thus represents a radically revised version of the preceding edition, amounting essentially to a new book in its own right. However, the basic aim has remained the same, namely to provide a broad and unified description of laser behavior at the simplest level which is compatible with a correct physical understanding. The book is therefore intended as a textbook for a senior-level or first-year graduate course and/or as a reference book. The most relevant additions or changes to this edition can be summarized as follows: 1. A much-more detailed description of Amplified Spontaneous Emission has been given (Chapter 2) and a novel simplified treatment of this phenomenon, both for homogeneous and inhomogeneous lines, has been introduced (Appendix C). 2. A major fraction of a new chapter (Chapter 3) is dedicated to the interaction of radiation with semiconductor media, either in a bulk form or in a quantum-confined structure (quantum-well, quantum-wire and quantum dot). 3 |

Title | Principles of Phase Conjugation |
Author(s) | Zel'Dovich, B.Y;Pilipetsky, N.F;Shkunov, V.V |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1985. |
Description | X, 253 p. 21 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book has been prompted by our des ire to share with others our apprecia?? tion of the harmony and beauty in a particular sphere of modern optics known as "optical phase conjugation". Practical applications of the phase?? conjugated wave are likely to be far-reaching. Optical phase conjugation (OPC) combines in itself aesthetic and pragmatic attractiveness, a synthesis that has made OPC a subject of general attention. The figure presents the ap?? proximate rate of publications (number of articles per year) on OPC in the world literature for recent years, the lower curve denoting the work carried out in the USSR. The efforts of a large unofficial international collective have yielded an impressive result. 150 100 50 1975 1980 At present, the physical pro ces ses underlying various OPC methods are quite understandable, and it is the physics of OPC to which our book is devoted. Practical and scientific applications of phase-conjugated waves, which are of no less interest, have been touched upon in short, as major achievements in this sphere are a matter of the future. Today there are two main methods of OPC: i) by backward stimulated light scattering, ii) by four-wave mixing. Naturally, much attention is given to these methods in our book which, after the introductory Chap. 1, can be divided into two almost independent parts - Chaps. 2 - 5, and Chaps. 6 - 8 |

Description | XII, 311 p. 16 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | The CO2-laser technology may be considered the most advanced in the laser field. Research has been stimulated strongly because of its high potential for many scientific and industrial applications. This book is primarily devoted to the main, more established developments of the CO2-laser. Advances in continuous systems, pulsed systems, mode-locked pulses, and the amplification of short pulses are dealt with in detail. This is done by giving an extensive treatment of relevant molecular physics, gas kinetics, excitation and relaxation processes, and laser physics pertinent to CO2. It also provides a thorough theoretical background of specific technologies used in various devices. Many numerical values of physical constants and accurate spectroscopic data of CO2 isotopes are included |

Title | Ultrashort Laser Pulses and Applications |
Author(s) | Kaiser, Wolfgang |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1988. |
Description | XV, 424 p. 29 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | Ten years ago, Stanley L. Shapiro edited the book entitled Ultrashort Light Pulses (Topics Appl. Phys., Vol. 18), which was written by eight experts in the field. Six years later, Charles V. Shank added a bibliography (1980-1983) in the second edition with approximately one thousand new references. During the past decade the field has grown so rapidly that a completely new book had to be written. In particular, the reduction of the time scale of light pulses into the femtosecond range has opened up new experimental possibilities never even foreseen in the preceding literature. The vast literature with countless ideas and applications makes it impossible for a single person to write a comprehensive review. Nine scientists, actively working in the field since its beginning, have decided to join forces to prepare a new book describing the present state of the art. Emphasis is placed on the generation and numerous applications of ultrashort laser pulses. This book covers a wide area of science: physics, engineering, chemistry, and biology. The various chapters and sections are prepared in each case such that the reader is given a brief introduction to the specific subject. Ample references for a more detailed study are given at the end of each chapter |
