Abstract NoteThe book provides an introduction to the methods of quantum statistical mechanics used in quantum optics and their application to the quantum theories of the single-mode laser and optical bistability. The generalized representations of Drummond and Gardiner are discussed together with the more standard methods for deriving Fokker--Planck equations. Particular attention is given to the theory of optical bistability formulated in terms of the positive P-representation, and the theory of small bistable systems. This is a textbook at an advanced graduate level. It is intended as a bridge between an introductory discussion of the master equation method and problems of current research

Abstract NoteThe International Conference on Lasers and Applications was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from 29 June to 3 July 1980. This conference was held to commemorate the memory of Professor Sergio Porto who died suddenly about one year earlier while attending a laser conference in the Soviet Union. The sub?? ject matter covered the active areas of laser devices, photochemistry, non?? linear optics, high-resolution spectroscopy, photokinetics, photobiology, photomedicine, optical communication, optical bistability, and Raman spec?? troscopy. The conference was attended by over 150 people including scientists from Japan, France, England, West Germany, Norway, Italy, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, India, Canada, and the United States. Amemorial session attended by members of the Porto family and ranking Brazilian government dignitaries preceded the start of the conference. The location of the conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was chosen be?? cause it was in the homeland of Sergio Porto and provided an opportunity for his friends, colleagues, and countryrnen to pay hornage to hirn. The setting on Copacabana Beach afforded access to the lovely beaches, restaurants, and nightlife of one of the most beautiful and exciting cities of the world. There were tours of the city together with a banquet that featured a performance by one of the best Samba Schools in Rio. Financial support from many sponsors in Brazil and the United States is gratefully acknowledged in making this working conference a fitting tribute to the memory of Professor S.P.S. Porto

Abstract NoteLaser cooling is a relatively new technique that has led to insights into the behavior of atoms as well as confirming with striking detail some of the fundamental notions of quantum mechanics, such as the condensation predicted by S.N. Bose. Abstract NoteIn this paper we investigated the dynamics of the processes occurring in a Q-switched laser. This work was stimulated by the lack of data on the spatial and temporal development of generation, despite the obvious importance of such data in the use of giant light pulses in in?? vestigations of the nonlinear interaction of radiation and matter. From a systematic con?? sideration of a relatively simple model of a Q-switched laser we analytically investigated two main phases of development of the giant pulse - the phase of linear development of generation, which begins with amplification of the spontaneous emission in the modes, and the phase of nonlinear transverse development, during which the giant light pulse proper is emitted. In ad?? dition, fo r a thorough inve stigation of the picture of development of the pulse as a whole the equations were numerically integrated. ' Subsequent experiments [26, 27] confirmed the occurrence of transverse development of the giant pulse, while recent experiments on nonlinear amplification [28] have shown the sig?? nificance of this effect in the propagation of the giant pulse in a nonlinear medium. A know?? ledge of the transverse development of the giant pulse would appear to be essential for the exact determination of the true strength of the light field in experiments on multi photon pro?? cesses [29]. The developed theory also leads to recommendations for the design of lasers to generate giant light pulses of minimum length and minimum divergence of emission

Abstract NoteProfessor Hunsperger's Integrated Optics is one of the few texts that is comprehensive and thorough enough for use both as a classroom text (practice problems are included) and as a specialist's reference. The gratifying success of the first two editions and the continuing rapid development of the field necessitated the writing of this third edition. All chapters have been revised and updated, and a new chapter, on quantum well devices, has been added. As in the previous editions, detailed descriptions of the phenomena, devices, and technology used in optical integrated circuits and their relationship to fiber optics are presented. The trend of telecommunications toward the use of single mode systems operating at the longer wavelengths of 1.3 and 1.55 ??m is explained and documented with illustrations of recently developed devices and systems. Broader coverage of GaInAsP devices and optical integrated circuits is provided, and the new growth tech- niques of molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) are described. A discussion of the extensive development of hybrid optical integrated circuits in lithium niobate is also included. From the reviews: I never had the opportunity of using Hunsperger as a text to teach from but after reading the present third edition, I think it must be a pleasure to do so. It is a good book because of its precise language and its didactic organization (with many clear tables), it is exhaustive in its details, and rigorous in its background; it is well suited for a graduate-level course

Abstract NoteA textbook on lasers and optical engineering should include all aspects of lasers and optics; however, this is a large undertaking. The objective of this book is to give an introduction to the subject on a level such that under?? graduate students (mostly juniors/seniors), from disciplines like electrical engineering, physics, and optical engineering, can use the book. To achieve this goal, a lot of basic background material, central to the subject, has been covered in optics and laser physics. Students with an elementary knowledge of freshman physics and with no formal courses in electromagnetic theory should be able to follow the book, although for some sections, knowledge of electromagnetic theory, the Fourier transform, and linear systems would be highly beneficial. There are excellent books on optics, laser physics, and optical engineering. Actually, most of my knowledge was acquired through these. However, when I started teaching an undergraduate course in 1974, under the same heading as the title of this book, I had to use four books to cover the material I thought an electrical engineer needed for his introduction to the world of lasers and optical engineering. In my sabbatical year, 1980-1981, I started writing class notes for my students, so that they could get through the course by possibly buying only one book. Eventually, these notes grew with the help of my undergraduate and graduate students, and the final result is this book
