TitleQuantum Optics and the Spectroscopy of Solids : Concepts and Advances
Author(s)Hakiogammalu, T;Shumovsky, Alexander S
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1997.
DescriptionXVIII, 252 p : online resource
Abstract NoteRemarkable recent progress in quantum optics has given rise to extremely precise quantum measurements that are used in the research into the fundamentals of quantum physics, and in different branches of physics such as optical spectroscopy. This progress stimulates new technologies in the field of optical communications, optical computation and information systems. This state-of-the-art volume presents work from a Summer School on Advances in Quantum Optics and Spectroscopy of Solids, held in Ankara, Turkey, in 1995. The various contributions written by leading scientists in the field cover a wide range of subjects in this exciting area of physics, and report new and important results and ideas. Topics dealt with include the interaction of quantum light with trapped atoms and condensed matter; quantum tomography and phase analysis; and many applications of quantum optics from mesoscopic physics to correlation spectroscopy of non-classical states, which are of major importance in understanding the nature of collective excitations in solids. Audience: This book will be of interest to postgraduate students and researchers whose work involves quantum optics, solid state spectroscopy and its applications

TitleLaw and Prediction in the Light of Chaos Research
Author(s)Weingartner, Paul;Schurz, Gerhard
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1996.
DescriptionX, 294 p : online resource
Abstract NoteLike relativity and quantum theory chaos research is another prominent concept of 20th century physics that has triggered deep and far-reaching discussions in the philosophy of science. In this volume outstanding scientists discuss the fundamental problems of the concepts of law and of prediction. They present their views in their contributions to this volume, but they also are exposed to criticism in transcriptions of recordings made during discussions and in comments on their views also published in this book. Although all authors assume familiarity with some background in physics they also address the philosophers of science and even a general audience interested in modern science's contribution to a deeper understanding of reality

TitleQuantum Dynamical Semigroups and Applications
Author(s)Alicki, Robert;Lendi, Karl
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1987.
DescriptionVIII, 198 p. 1 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteIn this text the authors develop quantum dynamics of open systems for a wide class of irreversible processes starting from the concept of completely positive semigroups. This unified approach makes the material easily accessible to non-specialists and provides an easy access to practical applications. Written for graduate students, the book presents a wealth of useful examples; in particular, models of unstable and N-level systems are treated systematically and in considerable detail including new types of generated Bloch-equations. The general theory is extensively summarized from abstract dynamical maps to those obtained by a reduction of Hamiltonian dynamics under a Markovian approximation. Various methods of determining semigroup generators and the corresponding master equations are discussed including time-dependent and nonlinear generators. Further topics treated are a generalized H-theorem, quantum detailed balance and return to equilibrium, discrete quantum Boltzmann equation, nonlinear Schr??dinger equation, spin relaxation by spin waves, entropy production and its generalization by a measure of irreversibiblity

TitleLocalizability and Space in Quantum Physics
Author(s)Bacry, Henri
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1988.
DescriptionVII, 84 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book discusses in detail the concept of light quanta (photons) and presents a historical survey of the ideas involved. It analyses critically the principles of complementarity and correspondence as well as the quantization procedure. The work of Wigner, Newton and Wightman on localized states is discussed. The author presents many new ideas and gives a new way of defining the position operator. He invites physicists to look in new directions and aims to convince the reader that light quanta are not compatible with our present concept of space in quantum physics. The book should be of interest to students as well as to researchers in modern physics and should revive the discussion of the foundations of modern physics
